Not sure if this belongs in software or hardware, as it is a strange question. I am trying to get Mavis Beacon running on my A2000 with 3.1 ROMS. It's a pretty old game, so I was thinking perhaps it only likes 1.3 roms. It Guru's instantly if loaded from my 3.1 side...if I boot off of floppy I have to invoke it from AmigaDOS, where it behaves up until the point of actually starting the lessons. Reading about it on lemonamiga says that it is an OCS game, no ECS listed. My 2000 has an ECS agnus. I guess through all this rambling I am wondering if the issue is just roms or does it really dislike the ECS and getting a ROM switcher wouldn't help?

Anything is possible, but in almost every case of incompatibility its been the kickstart at fault, rather than chipset.
Do you have relokick or similar to test with ?
-
use relockick to reduce the capabilities of your machine down to kickstart 1.3 and only 512k chip ram. This is the basics of OCS compared to ECS which is KS2.04 and 1Meg chipram.
You should be able to use skick
http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/skick346
this will need an original 1.3rom image tho

relokick

again you will need to source a Kickstart 1.3 rom image

Sometimes it is the actual ECS as new registers were added and, more importantly, unused bits of the original registers then became valid, particularly in reference to memory addressing registers. If Mavis Beacon didn't ignore the unused bits it will fail to run properly on ECS+.

Just to be sure "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing" Software Toolworks 1988
Runs fine on my A2000 with 9 meg ram 3.1 rom and I believe OCS
the motherboard is rev6.2 1988.
won't let me make a good adf file but copied the files using Diskmaster2 and amiga explorer to make a disk in UAE
tried 1.3 ecs and ocs different amounts of ram 1 meg and 512 and 3.1 starts up but I hit a key and the program closes

Degrader (http://aminet.net/package/util/misc/Degrader) might help, too.

Awesome- I'll try those suggestions. And yes, "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing" is the porogram. I am running it off of a downloaded adf that I have blitzed onto a floppy.

TUDE
http://aminet.net/util/misc/TUDE.lha is probably the best degrader.

Is it cracked then? Cracked versions are often compatible with only a 1MB A500 or 1MB A2000.

No-no cracked. At least there is no "Lookit me I craX0rd this warez" brag upon loading.
