Title: Amiga 4000 ethernet advice
Post by: dangermouse on May 29, 2010, 10:08:25 AM
Hi

My Ariadne in my 4000 is starting to get a little flaky (works sometimes then not) so I've decided to replace her. I'm interested in buying a Deneb USB controller so that I can use USB->Ethernet dongles but I have a few questions:

1. I run OS3.9 and OS4.0 Classic on the 4000...is the Deneb supported by both?

2. Do only certain USB->Ethernet dongles work with the Deneb (I've got an SMC 10/100 gathering dust I'm hoping to use) under both OSes or do any work?

3. If I get the Deneb can I exclusively use a USB keyboard/mouse or do I have to revert to Amiga peripherals for bypassing the startup sequence / accessing CSPPC early config screen etc etc?

4. My other option is of course the XSurf but it looks a bit 'cobbled together' judging by the pictures...are these good reliable cards as it seems supported in both OSes

Thanks muchly

I hate to offer advice based on one single datapoint, but I have an Xsurf, and it just decided to stop working after only having used it for a couple of years. That didn't make me happy.

Two Commodore A2065s I've had since the 1990s have always worked perfectly.

A common problem with older ethernet cards is the little voltage conversion box. If you can get at it with a multimeter while it's running, you should be able to find out whether that's the issue. The outputs are usually labelled or can be found easily by Googling. If it is that, you can probably find a cheap older ethernet card on eBay with the same kind of voltage convertor and swap them.

Other things to try are using a different switch or hub, or finding a hub with a 10base2 connector and using 10base2.

I can't say anything about OS3.9, but I use a Trendnet TU2-ET100 plugged into my Deneb on my A4000 to access the Internet on OS3.9 using Genesis.
