Just curious mostly.. how much can you expand an A1000 in terms of processor and RAM ?
-
Not very far with a standard motherboard. I think it's half a meg of Chip RAM and 8 megs of Fast. CPU-wise, a 68010 is probably your only option. There might be a few CPU-socket accelerators with an 020 or 030 that will fit in a 1000, but I'm not sure which ones.
Things are different if you have a Phoenix or Rejuvinator board :)

The CSA Mega Midget Racer was an 030 that fit both in the A500 and A1000. After my A500 died, a priest was very happy with the speed increase the Racer and the ram card gave his A1000.

There are a few fast ram boards available. My 1st a1000 had an insider2meg board that worked really well.
The best bet for cpu is actually the 14mhz mod you can diy. It doesn't speed things up double and it can cause problems iirc with floppy but for some software there can be a little boost. There was one 14mhz mod I saw that had a switch that could be hot switched.
the mega midget racer http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/megamidget has been used succesfully in a 1000.
amiduffer beat me on the mega midget, the link has some info on it, its pretty rare though
icd made a 14mhz 68000 accelerator too

Any A500 internal accelerator can be used 020/030/040, and these can have 32bit Fast RAM and load Kickstart into there too with a suitably supplied utility. There is no technical difference between the 1000/500 preventing such things, only the physical positioning of the 68000 socket near the side of the A1000 casing leaving less room.
As the Zorro 1 side expansion has the same lines/signals on A500/1000 then you can use any of those too, even if they are back to front, like the GVP 030 side expansion.
The only actual difference is the Agnus, as the 1mb/2mb chip ram boards are for fat Agnus then they won't fit. So 512mb chip is possibly the max for the A1000? I don't know if anyone did a 2mb or 1mb chip ram upgrade on a board type fat Agnus adaptor for the A1000.
There are WOM>ROM converters for Kickstart on A1000 too so you can have that as well.
