Title: USB Audio and Network solutions for a Deneb-equipped A4000?
Post by: mingle on May 25, 2010, 01:14:59 PM
Hi all,

I've been having a great time using my Deneb card to easily access all sorts of flash drives and external hard drives (along with USB mice and keyboards), but I'd also like to try some USB audio and network devices too...

However I'm unsure as to what makes/models will work with my Deneb card and the Poseidon USB stack.

The Deneb website doesn't seem to list any compatible USB audio or network devices either...

I'd like to use one of the cheap and easy to obtain USB audio cards and also a USB to Ethernet dongle (I'm guess wireless network dongles aren't supported?)...

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi mate,

Not sure about the usb sound, but i've got a usb to ethernet dongle that plugs straight into a wireless access point working...

The dongle is a Belkin model F5D5050 bought at Harvey Norman and the access point is a D-link DGL3420...

Hi,

Thanks for the reply...

I managed to track down one of these (not too hard, since they seem to be the most common USB-Ethernet dongle on the planet!):

Cheaps eBay USB-Ethernet dongle (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/USB-RJ45-Card-Lan-10-100-Ethernet-Network-Adapter-/110532608952?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19bc41c3b8)

From several accounts they work flawlessly with Deneb/Poseidon - at under $AU 4, I guess it's worth a gamble!

I'm planning to plug my A4000 into a spare RJ-45 port on my D-Link router, which is directly connected to my cable-modem - hopefully I won't get too many headaches trying to get MiamiDX to work with it! ;-)

USB Audio seems harder to nail down... I'd love to be able to play and record 16-bit audio on my Amiga... :-)

Cheers,

Mike.

I have a SoundBlaster X-Fi that works with Deneb. It's a pretty fancy card with a nice DAC, but with USB audio, you still need a really fast processor. Compared to a modern computing experience, I really was not impressed using USB for audio even when I had an 060 in my A2500. Computer slowed to a crawl when in use. Perhaps you'd have better luck with Zorro III mode in the A4000. At this point though, I think I'd pursue a Sunrize AD516 if I cared about 16-bit audio on an Amiga today. A lot better performance IIRC.

Oh and to date, there is no support for Wireless USB dongles. The guy behind Poseidon (Chris Hodges) mentioned there will probably never be either.

There was a list of chipsets in a news post & comments on here that you could check to see if its compatible but if others have vouched for it then there should be no probs...
I'm using it with my installation of Easynet from Amigakit...

I'm curious about the usb sound also, from memory you need to install AHI drivers but hopefully that should be fairly painless...

Any USB to Audio dongle should work with Poseidon as pretty much all of them will at least support the USB Audio standard. I just connected a couple of different USB to Audio devices I had lurking around in my parts drawer to my Deneb and they give me at least 2 channel 16 bit audio in AHI prefs.

Thanks for the feedback guys...

I've just plonked down the princely sum of US$1.60 (which includes shipping!) for a simple USB audio dongle.

If it works, then I'll be happy, if not, then I'll still be happy I tried, even if I'll be poorer by the cost of a cup of coffee! :-)

The lack of wireless USB networking is a bit of a pity. If it was possible, then I could keep my Amigas in a separate room, away from the PCs. But it looks like I'll have to sit them on the same desk and use a USB-Ethernet dongle to get me connected to my network router.

Cheers,

Mike.

Oh, I also bought a cheap USB-MIDI cable too, since my MOTU Fastlane USB MIDI interface doesn't seem to work with Deneb/Poseidon...

That was a bargain too - under US$5! :-)

I have a deneb in a 2000 with an 030 board.  But I haven't tried usb audio yet.  Could someone tell me what usb-audio/AHI would give me over the standard amiga audio?

16-bit audio or "hi-fidelity" sound if you like. Good luck with that on a 2000/030 though. You'll be tweaking buffer settings all_day_long trying to get consistent/non jumpy sound out of her. Neat to try out, just to play around and experiment with - but it's way easer to simply hit the play button on your CD player and enjoy music that way  ;)

Trying to play back higher-res audio through Paula results in a "dirty", more grungy lo-fi kind of sound.

BTW: These USB audio dongles do not replace Paula for native game sounds, etc., if that's what people are thinking.

You should get an Edimax BR-6204Wg and run it in wireless bridge mode. Then you can connect up to four computers to it by ethernet and have them connected to your wireless AP with WPA/WPA2.

@ op

What ever happened with the el cheapo dongle? Did it work with your deneb?

on-board SCSI of A3000 and A4000T is not supported, use the SCSI  controller on the Cyberstorm PPC processor card which is fully supported  with a native DMA enabled driver, or the on-board IDE controller in the  Amiga 1200 or 4000(T).

Hi,

I bought a SB1140 usb soundblaster (soled at dynabyte as Soundblaster xfi player) and works. But only in PIO mode, not in Z3 DMA mode.

Sound makes hickups in DMA mode with AMP.

Is there any advantage in using a SoundBlaster USB instead of an el cheapo USB sound card? Hardware MP3 decoding for instance?
