Title: Amiga 500 not booting
Post by: bitman on May 24, 2010, 04:19:58 PM
Recently I got an Amiga 500 (with commodore key), kickstart 1.2.

When powered up - the kickstart screen shows - and the disk-drive starts waiting for a disk, but if I put in a disk it task a few spins/reads for 2-3 seconds, and the returns to the kickstart screen (without rebooting).

I've tried replacing the drive with a drive from an A600 and A4000 - but the same scenario keeps happening.

Any suggestion`?

If you have an A500 with Kickstart, you aren't seeing a Kickstart screen - correct? You're seeing a screen asking for Workbench?

I'd guess either all your drives are bad, the ribbon cables were not connected properly, Gary or CIA chip went bad. More likely a CIA chip though since they're also responsible for the joy/mouse ports and people LOVE to plug and unplug their mice and joysticks when the computer is on. Quite common for the CIA's to blow actually. Swap them with each other and see what happens. There's two of 'em labeled 8520...

Tried replacing most of the chips - no success. Left it on for a few minutes - screen turned green. Now it's green evey time I turn it on - guess it's a ram problem then.

Yep - not too big a problem. have you tried replacing Agnus with a known good one? You good at soldering/de-soldering those RAM chips?

I'm having the same problem with 2 of my 500's and was wondering if the drive jumpers are in the right place

2 drives both matsushita

The first one is a JU 253-03t (any idea were I can find the recommended jumper settings?)

and the second is a JU-253-031P this one probably needs cleaning i get a read error message but I haven't a clue how to clean it properly.

I have a panasonic drive that works in both.
