Title: Amiga comes through! ffmpeg to the rescue
Post by: mgerics on May 23, 2010, 01:47:56 PM
* Not intended as a slam against any other system or systems*
Love the Amiga, usually just use winuae lately, but do have an A3000 and A2000.

Don't use Linux much, but would like to, so I can't comment on what is available for it.

So, I use m$oft regularly, and like to dl short vids (couch race crash - still laugh every time I see it) - some of which don't play in media player classic, etc.

No Problem, I'll get a converter! Tried several, but some vids just won't convert, some are demos only, others have weird interfaces...

Along comes ffmpeg from Aminet.

Wow. Nothing I've thrown at it fails, just me when I mis-type an option.

Isn't ffmpeg a port from a Linux version?

I've had good luck with VLC as well.

Everything you could ever dream of, including the said ffmpeg.

So really ffmpeg comes through, not any platform in particular.

PS. ffmpeg is available for every platform you can think of, including Windows.

Try this (http://www.erightsoft.biz/GetFile.php?SUPERsetup.exe). It's an easy to use front end to ffmpeg amongst others (all included) for windows.

Good luck sir.

i thought you wanted a recommendation for which linux to use?

Me, I like Mandriva, everyone else likes Ubuntu, which i like to think of as the Windows of the Linux world: VERY popular, but bloated, slower and looks like pants.  And they even follow the pattern of putting out a dog of a distro every now and then-heard a few people call Ubuntu 10 "Linux's Vista"

I'm using Xubuntu 10 right now.  It's not bad.  I had been using Ubuntu 10 beta but found it very buggy, especially for a LTS release.  Try this out- it will help you pick a distro:

I guess I'll stick with Ubuntu 8.10 for now   :)

I am a linux user (relatively new, been using it maybe 2-3 years) and I personally don't care for ubuntu. It is much too buggy, and the idea that you have to update your system every 6 months for regular editions is very annoying. Please, don't let it sway your opinion of linux. I personally like debian (its what ubuntu is based off of) because it is more componentized and allows you to build your own system. Plus, you get the ease of a package manager, and it runs on pretty much any architecture (minus 68k!) you can dream of.  It's also extremely stable. However, the downside to debian (at least the stable version) is that the packages are EXTREMELY old. But, then again they are stable. If you do use Debian you may want to use their testing version (in between cutting edge, and stable). If you just want something that works, debian stable is a good way to go. My favorite however is gentoo. This system allows you to compile and build the WHOLE system. It too has a package manager that automatically installs packages, but they have to be compiled. It does take longer, but the best part about gentoo is the packages are new (not unstable, not moldy) and compiled explicitly for your system. I think it most captures the amiga model of putting the user back in control of his system. You choose what goes in! But, it is more difficult to set up for a beginning user. Also, in case anyone is wondering, I am also Super TWiT on linuxquestions.org, ubuntuforums.org, forums.debian.net, and even the apple support forums. Yep, I wear many hats....:roflmao:
