Title: WHDLoad and E-Matrix 68030 40Mhz
Post by: XDelusion on May 19, 2010, 07:03:45 AM
I installed my E-Matrix 68030 40Mhz from Amigakit today and I set up work bench in WinUAE directly to the CF card I use with my 1200 as the hard drive.

Everything was running smooth as could be on WinUAE, but when ever I try to load a WHDLoad game on the real Amiga, I get a ton of garbage on the screen and have to reboot.

Nothing works.

BTW I do not have Math Co-Processor yet.

Math's co-pro has nothing to do with it (eg 99.99% of games won't even use it).

Two most obvious problems are power supply and memory corruption.

What OS is it?

Have you got the 3.1 boot floppy?

450 Watt ATX Power Pack

030 and Memory arrived from AmigaKit today. (Brand new)

I do have the Work Bench 3.1 Floppies and am running 3.1 with MagellanII

Minimal Display so I still have the majority of my Chip RAM left to spare.

ok, try downloading a memory checker from AmiNet and run it against your new card.

Do ematrix and or 030 have timing problems that needs mods to certain a1200 mobo revisions ?

You need to update WHDload to the latest beta, to fix a specific bug with your accelerator card and WHDload.

Please read more here: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=50521 (http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=50521)

Replaced files in C and S and still the same thing. Digital garbage on my screen, or a black screen, or a black screen that eventually reboots, or a black screen that eventually goes to a RED ERROR screen and then reboots.

Formatted Boot Partition, installed OS 3.9 this time. Updated the the latest WHDLoad and...

...well now I can sometimes see Company or Game Logo screen then back to the usual errors.

I don't think WHDLoad likes these E-Matrix cards AT ALL!

Is your 1200 a PAL unit?  Many games won't run in NTSC mode.

On bootup, you can pick PAL mode from the early startup menu by holding both mouse buttons while powering up.  Give that a shot and then hit one of the WHDLoad games.

(You'll need a 50hz capable display.)

Have you got a WHDLoad keyfile? If so, try deleting it or moving it to a temporary directory and try again with the same games, see if they load.

@tone007 I'm on a PAL system (I thought ahead when I made this purchase). :)

@Cammy, No, I'm not registered, but intend to as soon as I see this working.

I did try to install a game by hand rather than using one of those pre-made HDF packages and I got a "line error" something or other error.

Gotta head back to work, but will elaborate on this later, gotta run! Thankx!

Good idea, dealing with switching modes all the time gets to be a hassle.

Here's an error I produced with Kid Chaos:

error in os emulation module subsystem: dos.library error number: $FFFFFF6A#=150.

Also, as fate would have it, ADOOM says this:

adoom program failed (error #00000004) wait for disk activity to finish

Might it have something to do with my Sansdisk CF card or the CFtoIDE adapter?

Hmm, now I'm just getting a different error each time.

Not unlike this thread:

XDelusion, is your MaxTransfer speed for the CF card partitions set to 0x1FE00 ? If it's not, it's possible that could be the cause of some of your problems. Change it to that in HDToolBox (if it's not already) and try it.

I have exactly the same accelerator card and ADoom works fine for me.  The problem almost certainly lies with your IDE settings.  I am also using a Sandisk CF card as a hard drive replacement.  My "MAX TRANSFERS" parameter is set to 0x1FE00.

I agree with Cammy, sounds like a MaxTransfer error.

0x1FE00 did the trick it seems!

I've only tested Aladdin so far, but the results are good! Now to install and test Ultima VI.

I had a funny feeling it was something to do with the CF card.

Thankx again community nerds! ;)

Alright, now I need this to stop working so I can do something productive today besides play old video games! :)

As an extra bonus, it seems a few games support both buttons of my Master System controller as well!

That's right, there are hundreds of Amiga games that support 2-button controllers, you just have to check each one and see if it has the option. Also, many WHDLoad games contain patches to remap keys to buttons on your control pad, so you can even try Ruff 'n' Tumble with a jump button at last. You may need to enable these options in the Icon Tooltypes.

I'm starting a list of all Amiga games that support more than 1 button, so everyone can see how many games support 2-button and CD32 controllers. If you wouldn't mind, do you think you could take note of the games you discovered to work with the 2-button pad? Anyone is welcome to add to the list, and I guess I'll write it up in a new thread so it will be easy to find in the future.

I'm glad you got the A1200 working properly now, just remember about the MaxTransfer settings for the next CF card you format for the Amiga. I've done it at least ten times here so I've got the process down-pat now. That setting 0x1FE00 is the magic code!

The maxtransfer value is something I've forgotten about more than once when setting up hard drives on my old machines. I usually remember after the first major IO error :)

@Cammy: SURE! Do I get paid with more photos?! ;)

Seriously though, I'll be tinkering around with WHDLoad for some time, so I'll happily take notes and share them.

Thankx again to all for the help! I'm very elated that this is at last working!

Here's my (short) list thus far.

Please keep in mind that I am using an unmodified Sega Master System control pad.

I will modify a Sega Genesis controller later on, once it has arrived in the mail for three, and perhaps six button testing, assuming I can find instructions for the latter hack.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aladdin AGA: - Both buttons work and are assignable within the options menu.

Damage - Button 1 = Attack. Button 2 = Select Weapon/Scroll Dialog.

Great Gianna Sisters - Button 1 is fire. Button 2 is Jump (PERFECT AT LAST!!!)

Lion Heart - DO NOT select TWO BUTTON option under OPTIONS. This will cause both Jump and Attack to be assigned to Button 1 on the SMS Controller.

McDonald Land - Nothing. :(

AmiMasterGear - While not WHDLoad related, it does support both SMS buttons as it should and runs quite well on a 40Mhz 030 I might add.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There has been talk of an Amiga Wiki. This is the sort of information that needs to be in there, amongst other things.

I am running into the same problem. The only thing is when I set MaxTransfer it keeps defaulting to 0xffffff. Its like the setting does not stick...

A1200 - GVP 030/40 with 32mb ram.

Thanks.
