Title: Kickstart 3.1 and CF Odd Behavior?
Post by: XDelusion on May 19, 2010, 02:27:11 AM
And yet more strange things are afoot at the Circle K.

So I got my Kickstart 3.1 roms, dropped them into my A1200 with a hammer (joking).

Booted up, fine everything is cool.

I decided to format my CF card on my Winblows machine and install OS 3.9 to my CF card via WinUAE. All went well but the icons were way to big for my tiny display, plus OS 3.9 wasn't as fast as I was hoping on my new and freshly installed 030 40Mhz with 16Mb RAM. (No FPU if that matters).

So I formatted my CF card back to Fat32.

Booted it up on my Real Amiga so that HDTools would see it and I could partition it.

I set aside 200Mb as DH0 and the other 4Gb as DH1.

Upon reboot the Amiga would only see DH0.

I put the CF card back into my PC and booted up WinUAE booting off my 3.1 INstall ADF.

Same thing, sees DH0, does not see DH1.

I booted AmiKit with OS 3.9.

It saw both partitions and I formatted them.

Emulator booting off 3.1 sees them now as does the actually 1200.

What's the deal?

The Amiga sometimes has trouble detecting unformatted partitions. You can force it to try by sending a command to the device (i.e., 'dir dh1:')

I wonder if you'd have better luck formatting that CF card to FAT16...

Also, you mentioned you weren't really savvy about patches and such. One that you should install for sure is IDEFix97 off Aminet. That may provide some more consistency when it comes to the IDE<>CF transfers.

Not sure what's up. With my old 3.0 roms I never had this issue.

Either way it can be fixed on WinUAE, I just wanted to point out all the strange things that have been going on, just in case someone else has experienced these problems.

Did you have your IDE<>CF Card adapter back then, with the older ROMS? Oh and yes - anyone who's messed around with upgrading and expanding an Amiga has run across strange, odd, inconsistent occurrences  ;)

NO, I'm not putting the older roms back in, but it did work better then, at least in that respect. On the other hand with Work Bench 3.1 I have more Chip RAM.

Speaking of which, is OS3.5 as resource intensive as OS3.9?

Is it worth upgrading to now that I have a 40Mhz 030 16Mb RAM?

You can only use 4.0 GB (4096 MB) with Kick 3.1, not 4.2 GB. Make the second partition smaller (3800 MB), then it should work.

This is bad advice. IDEfix is known *not* to work with CF cards at all. You'd need these (http://aminet.net/package/driver/media/IDEFix_patches) inofficial patches to make it work and they don't apply to IDEfix97 from Aminet.

Yes, it is. However, speed loss is mainly caused by the new icon engine. As you don't like the icons anyway, you could disable them in Prefs/Workbench.

How about FAT95 from Aminet? Is that installed on your system? Maybe I was confusing that with your IDE<>CF conundrum.

(sorry about the bad advice Thomas corrected)

So I'm supposed to install IDEFix then patch it?

could not even get IDEFix to fully install in the first place. It would ask if I wanted to run IDEFix and I'd say YES, then it would continue with the installer then eventually hang, like it forgot to finish installing or something, then I'd not be able to open up my directories in Dopus and would have to reset.

Why do you think you'd need IDEfix ? Do you have a 4-way adapter for the IDE bus ? If not, it is of no use for you.

I had some problems with my CF card as well...
normal HDtoolbox would not see it.
But HDtoolbox of os3.9 did. After a bit of struggle it showed up in early startup. and i was able to install os3.9 to it..
Now it just works..
(my cf card was 512mb tough) have not tried bigger CF.
But my SD-IDE adapter and a 1024mb MMC card works wery well.
Same problems with HDtoolbox, but it works now.

@Thomas

I mis-understood your above post. I thought you were suggesting I get IDEfix then patch it to make things work with my CF cards.

Anyhow, I now know that the bells and whistles of OS 3.9 can be turned off, so I am going to try to re-istall that and see how things go from there. It may help... we'll see.
