Title: Most loved and most hated consoles?
Post by: runequester on May 16, 2010, 01:29:10 AM
What game consoles did you love the most, and which did you hate the most?

Whatever criteria you want.. games, controllers, hardware etc

Hate anything with a thumb joystick on it. I'd say C64 and SNES as my favourites.

I was always very fond of the Sega Master System.

Nintendo. For screwing with Sony on the SNES-CD project. Luckily it was the catalayst for the original Playstation console, a console so perfect for it's environment and timing that only the Atari VCS was comparable in genius.

NES - for all the overpriced crappy Mario games and terrible rock hard square joypads.
Gameboy - For every putrid Pokemon game, cancer to the gaming world propping up themselves whilst Sony tore them a new one in the home console market.
SNES - For putting such a stupidly slow CPU in a machine AFTER the Genesis/Megadrive. Also for all the babying of their userbase by removing all the blood from MK. Oh and putrid Mario games.
Wii -  Pathetic PS2-o-clock graphics, and some extremely woolly controllers, all for a rip off price above that of the 360.  Oh and yes the controllers are inaccurate toys because now we have Wii+ controllers wooppeeee lol
DS - Abolutely pathetic technical spec at launch, couldn't even play video files on the go for the price. Total joke except for Korg's DS10 cartridge....all those other silly brain training games can lick my left one.

Think that covers it, oh yes except for the fact they screwed you all over by getting exclusive console rights to Tetris due to some Russian fool not following correct procedure (hope that idiot is in a goulash for that sin). Nintendo are as much scum as Microsoft, I hope there is some massive financial catastrophe where they both simultaneously sink without a trace from the world...sooner the better :)

In 93 I was close to sell my Mega Drive with Megs CD and by the Amiga CD32, but that never happend when the Sega Saturn came out.

C64 is not a console..... but anyway.

It would have to be the Dreamcast, it is still an amazing little machine. Small, well designed one of the better graphically of the time. Force feedback, little micro games in the memory cards... nice little touches everywhere.

I still have a mint Dreamcast boxed with all the gear, keyboard, mouse, light guns (shame they dont work on Plasma/LCD screens) modem...

I even have a custom case which I'll prolly never install... there's a HDD hack for them and if you're lucky you can pickup a NIC for it.

Top that off with a VGA adapter it's fantastic.

Xbox, this is great too, mod it stick a larger drive in it and it becomes a multimedia center plus mame box :-) (Or Amiga emulator... lol)

Classic consoles would have to be the master system, have found memories playing my girlfriends at the time... I even purchased it off her... still have it and it still works.

Oh and portable... would have to be the Sega Gamegear... :) and back in the day when I was at primary school it would have to be Nintendos Time and Watch games. :D

Oh yes, let me not forget the 3DO!!! I loved that system and it had the absolute best version of Po'ed amongst other games like Road Rash, Death Keep, and the like.

Of course I still own a Sega Dreamcast and get much use out of it thankx to the homebrew scene (yes Amiga runs great on it).

The Saturn was another great system that seemed to have a more unique library of games than it's Sony competition at the time, I.E. Panzer Dragoon II and Saga!

The Dreamcast has to be one of my all time favourties. Like Lurch I have most of the accessories mint in box, at one point I had them ALL!

I also love the Megadrive, Snes, N64 (WWF No Mercy & PD!!!) and XBox (either of them).

Like:

- Atari 2600: The mother of all consoles. I only need the H.E.R.O. cartridge ;)
- Atari Lynx: Quite ahead of it's time, quite some Amiga spirit in there, and the devkit was based on Amiga
- NES: Despite other opinions, I really like the controllers. Form follows function at it's best. Some really great games. Have a look at e.g. the NES version of Gyruss.
- Playstation 1:  The perfect console in the emerging 3d age
- PSP: awesome device, but what I don't like about it is how Sony locked it against homebrew stuff. Hopefully there will be an Eloader for 6.20 soon.
- CD32 (I guess, unfortunately I never had one, but it is an Amiga)

Dislike:
- everything else from Nintendo (maybe I am just too old for that stuff)
- All the Xbox stuff: Yeah, I admit it: because it's from Microsoft.

Never really had the chance to try the Sega stuff, so I can't say anything about it.

I loved the GameCube. Too bad Nintendo screwed up when it came to attracting decent games to it (Yeah, yeah, I _know_ Metroid prime and Resident Evil 4 were awesome).

Least liked would be the Mega drive. Mainly because I never got one. :D
Title: Re: Most loved and most hated consoles?

I love Sega, which is why one of my favourite consoles is Xbox 1 lol haven't gone crazy don't worry.

Seeing Jet Set Radio Future load up and do the attract screen for the first time on a massive TV would have made your jaw drop to the ground. And Panzer Dragoon Orta was just beautiful. Plus it had some truly excellent rally games too, that my £1400 PC couldn't replicate at the time like Colin McRae 3.

Probably my favourite console though is the PC-Engine. (NEC Turbo Grafix in USA?) I remember looking at this console the size of a CD case and then being stunned by games like Gradius/Nemesis and Salamander and Outrun. Hell even the first time I saw it at a computer show whilst chatting to Julian Rignall was with a R-Type running, boy did it look arcade perfect.

Favoites:

SNES - Love all the games like Starfox, Battletoads, Mario World etc..
Gameboy - Was cheap and very portable and loads of great games
NES - Mainly for Super Mario 3
Game Gear - Ahhhh Sonic and Dragons Trap
Megadrive - So many amazing games
Playstation 2 - for the same reasons as the Megadrive
N64 - Was an amazing console back in the day
Xbox 360 - Best current console

Dislike:

Atari 2600 - The graphics and sound suck and so do many games
Atari Jaguar - Most of the games suck and its ugly
NeoGeo Pocket - Because most games are crappy on it
Amstrad GX4000 - Because its rubbish

Intellivision and Colecovision are the most fun from the early 1980s.

Intellivision for smart, creative "involving" games.

Colecovision for the excellent arcade ports.

I've never had much interest in any consoles made after 1985 for some reason.  I suppose because nowadays it's mostly driving games and first person shooters.  Nothing wrong with those but I miss the variety, and the fact you could sit down and play a console game from start to finish in five or ten minutes instead of hours and hours.

Cant really say I hate any consoles, but the ones that stand out for me most nowadays would be sega master system, cd32, saturn, dreamcast (probably my all time fav. console), and xb360. I also started to have a little more interest in the original xbox once they stopped making them. Theyre quite versatile little boxes (emulators, media players, etc) and can be picked up very cheaply these days.

I like:

Playstation because of Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9.
Playstation 2 because of Final Fantasy 10, 10 Part 2 and 12 (11 is a MMORPG, never played it).
XBox because of Fable and Jade Empire.

Dislike:

Anything that doesn't have any games I like to play :)

NGC - I just love it. It looks so cute :D No, really, how can anyone not like the design? And the exclusive titles - Metroid Prime, Wind Waker (underrated!!!), Resi 4 (originally...), Mario...
N64 - cartridges - enough said...
DC - very nice - small, powerful, great exclusive games (Shenmue above all, Sonic Adv.), arcade ports - shmups, fighters...
XBOX - noisy, huge, heavy, by Microsoft, but for some reason I like it. Probably because of how versatile it can be with XBMC, emulators and the graphics still rocks today.
PS2 - I have the latest revision and it' just so much fun in such a small package. Soooo many games - FFs, GoWs, Ico, Okami, MGSs and thousands of others...
Mega Drive - an honest console with great games and controllers.
Sega Saturn - an ugly ducking sort of, but has some great exclusives - PD Saga, Nights, Radiant Silvergun...
Gameboys, NDS - Mario in my palm? What can be cooler???

I don't like (S)NES very much, I don't know why, maybe cause I've never had either of them...
PSOne - the first console I had, it's OK, but the beginnings of 3D gameplay were painful...

I like all consoles up until the point where you couldn't tell what console it was pretty much only by looking at the graphics and sound.

That, and I sort of have a soft spot for the Wii -- not because of its native library, but for the homebrew/emulation options.

Of those consoles we owned we did not hate any. The only thing we did hate *about* them was that it wasn't simple to bit-clone cartridges. which was our moral right as poor teenagers, nuff said.

I think I loved NES, SNES, N64, and DC the best. I also had a fetish for Master System when we had NES.It could display more colors on screen and had some interesting games like the Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy series. Sadly, we didn't have it.
If any of you haven't yet I suggest you to try Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle. I loved that game so much that I played through it again 1 year ago with a Mega Drive emulator. :drink:

Fun topic! I accidently stumbled across my Dreamcast today, such a nice console, and very innovative games aswell. One of my favorites for sure. I also play a lot on my DS, its fun and it has some very original games. Last on my nomination list is the Neo Geo pocket: although it lacks a backlight, it was one of the first proper handhelds in my opinion, despite the fact I loved the Game Gear back in the days.

Then again, now that I think of it.. I'm still trying to get hold of a complete megadrive+mega cd+32x set, the most expandable console of 'em all.

Colecovision.

Which is a totally irrational and nonsense chioce when you look at the hw, but Coleco did one thing that is very much to their credit: They sold it on the strength of the software. Which is how it should be of course, but I have (since) always shopped hardware based on its potential (which is why I like the Atari 7800 too).

I think I still have some of the old brochures around. They really knew how to sell their wares.
I actually rented a CV a few times. Real fine version of Cosmic Avenger.

It was the second machine for me and brother. The first one was a flavor of a certain TV Game with Pong and Pong variants.

I still remember when my brother got his 2600. We connected everything, put in the Defender II (?) cartridge and turned on, it looked so cool, except we could only shoot and not control the craft. After a few days of sadness one of us reconnected the stick into the other port...... :D

Ah that's brilliant.

I think I'll have to find a place to set mine up. It's a machine I have had from new that isn't setup. The other consoles I have and enjoy I bought second hand from ePay. Nes, Mega Drive (Genesis) and the CD32. The NES, I always wanted but back in the day I could only have 1 machine and that was the Amiga 500. The CD32 I somehow got obsessed with it overnight and dicided I had to have one. The Mega Drive was after a friends bought one on ePay and I got one boxed with about 56 games for around £55, so it was a bargain.

Wii's made before March '08 since they are hackable and can emulate every console up to the PS1/N64/Saturn.

Loved my Odyssey 2 and my Wii can emulate it!

Did not like:
PS1:  Piece of Siht1 is what is should have been called: weak 3D, weak load times, poor drive quality, the N64 owned it  A CD32 with an '030+fpu could have out performed the PS1....

PS2: or PoS#2, the dual-shock is not a good controller, gamecube's and Xbox's were better.  Poor reliability just like the PoS#1.  I have 1 friend that bought 4 PS2's over time...and Sony fanboys will knock the 360, atleast they only seem to break(overheat) once.

TurboGrafix16: lousy controllers

Favorites: never met a console I didn't like, and yes I had a jaguar, virtual boy, and a few others that are quite notorious. Dreamcast does have a special place.

Least favorite: ones that are broken or I have no games for...

I currently have 9? consoles in my collection, oh wait I have handhelds too, total of thirteen. Nope 15 I forgot my ps2 and xbox.

1. Gamecube.  Small enough to be easily portable, four player built in which is supported by many games, fast load times, some of the best in genre games for that generation were Nintendo exclusives, brilliant controller.  Recently I got a component cable, and am playing it on an LCD in 16x9 progressive scan.  Huge improvement in graphics.  F-Zero looks next-gen.  If you have a Wii ( I don't) then get the component cables and build a collection of NGC games, you won't regret it.

2. N64

3.  PS2.  For PES only.

BTW lots of posts for DC.  Strange considering it failed badly.

With the DC I think Sega knew they didn't have the bank-account to compete with Sony et al. They knew they could compete with software, and they have done really well.
Thats the reason Nintendo released the wii. They couldn't afford to compete toe to toe with MS and Sony so they altered the game. Now after selling millions of Wiis and games I think they have the cash to produce a much more powerful system.

I have many favorites and hates:

Favs
Nintendo:
NES-Zelda rules and you can't beat the classics
SNES- Starfox, Super Metroid, many more jewels
N64- Oot, Majora's Mask and Goldeneye, ergonomic controller
GCN- Twilight Princess, Starfox Assault, cute cube

Sega:
Genesis (and CD/32x): Sonic CD, Shadow Squadron, Sonic 1-3.
Saturn: VF2, NiGHTS, Sonic R, Panzer Dragoon
Dreamcast: Easy to pirate, dual blade controller, VMU, Sonic AdV 1&2, Virtual On:OT, many more

Hated:
Sony PS series: All cruddy poor construction, over priced
Nomad: Poor battery life, bad caps
Atari 7200: Weaker than 5800, bad gfx

I thought the N64 was crap (too blury), the Saturn's 3D looked crappy compared to the PS1 (although the actually hardware looked cooler) and the PS2 graphics were a mess (I actually prefered my Dreamcast's chipset).

Actually, the HW of the Saturn was better, but it was under utilized due to bad dev kits, poor third party games and bad choice of memory management (For instance, only one SH-2 could access mem registers at a time, VF2 used one CPU for each player)

Did the Amiga fail? No, but C< did!
Sega are still going but I still think they failed and not the DC. I think the Arsenal sponsership alone destroyed the advertising budget, idiotic to say the least.

I know it was mentioned earlier in this thread but the original XBox is by far the best value media centre available once modded. For this reason it deserves a special place in my clockwork heart. If anyone can find a media centre that compares with an XBox running XBMC for less cash, please correct me but I don't think such a beast exists.

I still own an N64, DC, PS1, GBA, 2 CD32's, XBox, 2 GC's and a PS3. The PS1 was a freebie and it sits in a cupboard, I still play all the others. For some reason the PS1 feels dated but the N64, DC, CD32 etc.. feel nostalgic. Strange that.

DS - Abolutely pathetic technical spec at launch, couldn't even play video files on the go for the price. Total joke except for Korg's DS10 cartridge....

It's for games not watching movies.  Again, the pathetic tech specs haven't stopped it from kicking ass.

all those other silly brain training games can lick my left one.

Just because you can't do them right...

------------------------

Anyway my most loved console is the Turbo Grafx-16 + CD.  Nothing beats the massive CD game library chock full of RPGs/Digital Comics, and the shooter library for HuCard kicks the piss out of every other system out there.

Plus, theres Bonk.  :D

I also like the Sega Genesis alot.

As far as most hated:

I don't like the Commodore 64 much.  The games suck and are better on other systems/computers every time  (R-Type, Double Dragon, Ultima series, Side Arms.... etc).  The only exclusive-to-C64 games worth the time are Legacy of the Ancients and Legend of Blacksilver.  I don't like the SID renditions of alot of shooter games (Nemesis), and alot of times the graphics look muddy and cracked out (Shadow of the Beast).......

Plus alot of games controls feel slippery, swapping disks gets annoying (though thats not really the systems fault, its more the time-era's fault).

and, I hate pressing up to jump.

Nintendo is the last great gaming company left. No offence intended to Sony or MS but they can put huge amounts of money into development etc. from other company sales, not on their own merit.  Where would the xbox be right now without millions from os and office sales. where would the ps3 be without millions from other electronics sales.
Nintendo imo deserves respect for competing in this market, on their own merrit, and not only that but succeeding. They have always taken flack for strong kids titles and hopefully always will. I'm a mario, zelda, and metroid fan and my kids love pokemon.

I think "hardcore" games suck and are no fun. running around like a maniac shooting anything that moves and dying hundreds of times? no thanks.

Love my PS1.  Love it.  The syphon filter games are great!  (Tase a guard until they catch fire?  I'm there!)  I don't get the hate.  Is it because it came along shortly after the CD32 and was about ten thousand times more popular?

Anyway, off to play some Soul Edge...erm, Calibur! :D

What's crappy about Mario 2!

Are we talking about the original Super Mario Bros 2 that was released in Japan, known in the west as Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, or Doki Doki Panic with the characters changed to the characters from Mario?

I agree with you on that one. Notice also how the older machines, and recent Nintendos all seem to be far more reliable than the current crop of 360s and PS3s?

the 360's especially, MS put some crazy money into repairs and you know that didn't come from 360 sales.

I liked both Mario lost levels and the dokidoki mod sm2. I know a lot of people didn't like 2 as much and it isn't as good as 3 but I liked the boss levels better and thats where we got shy guys (I think)

XBOX 1 is my all time favorite console next to dreamcast.
The modding ability allows you to take a $85 second hand xbox1 and softmod it to beyond  $300 AppleTV funcionality. I still have mine tricked out and gets lots of action.

I like a lot of the 360 games, but wouldn't buy a machine that I know is going to give me grief in a years time.

I haven't played Lost Levels, but I intend to download it on my Wii.

I suppose I can count my beloved Atari 8-bit as there was the XEGS! :)

As for the Dreamcast, my one wish is that they would have made a controller with the buttons on the LEFT and the Analog on the RIGHT so that those FPS's wouldn't be so damn impossible for me to control.

I'm not much of a console fan, to be honest.  I've mostly played games on computers, running from C64 -> Amiga -> Windows.  Of the current generation, I've somehow ended up with two consoles, though, and have both likes and dislikes for both of them.

Wii - this thing is such a mixed bag, it's not even funny.
The good:
* Innovative controls - I like the WiiRemote, and it works well in various conditions.
* Less intimidation - My wife actually bought the Wii for WiiFit, but will play other games on it as well, as there's less buttons and axis to freak her out.
* Wireless access and Opera internet browser.  This is probably the most used feature on the Wii at my house.  I just wish the browser could be in 1080 to see text/images clearer.  Also, a more modern version of Flash would be nice, but I guess I should be glad I have any, unlike iPad owners.  ;)
The bad:
* It has no hard disk, so storing downloads would be a problem, provided it had any larger than some small WiiWare titles and repackaged nostalgia cash-ins.
* No built-in media player capabilities.  Would be cool to play MP3 and video off file shares, or even USB.  (I believe you can browse pictures off USB, though.)
* Friend codes are a pain in the butt.
* Last gen graphics, with no 720 or 1080 modes.  It will acknowledge wide-screen 16:9 480p, but it's still not pretty, especially after looking at either an X360 or PS3.
* Poor control schemes; so many titles don't effectively use the Wii Remote as anything other than a clumsy two-piece joystick.  The nunchuck is almost always just used as an analog joystick cop-out or shake-toy.
* Shovelware - Egads!  Crap titles abound.  Most of Nintendo's own titles are pretty good, but the number of 3rd party titles that aren't complete garbage can probably be counted by the fingers on one hand.

I also have an XBox 360 - it's a little easier to figure out what I like and dislike, here.
The Good:
* Games - a true wealth of great 1st and 3rd party titles.  Many at great prices out of the Platinum Collection.
* XBox Live - Good game matchmaking / much easier friending
* XBox Marketplace - Good choices for downloads, plus many free skins and whatnot to change up your menus when you get bored.
The Bad:
* The joysticks aren't best thought-out devices in the world.  A quick switch to press (A) button can often result in a bumped (Start) button.  It gets less hits as you get more used to the controllers, but it still happens now and then.  My thumb is just big enough that hitting the center of (A) also bumps the corner of (Start).  I have calibrated myself to hit the right side of (A) but occasionally still miss it slightly and hit center of it.  Usually at the most inopportune time.
* The console itself is loud, chunky, and unreliable.  RRoD is always a fear in the back of the mind.
* The Microsoft factor.  They are a monopolistic company that only provides improvement when forced to.  If they're allowed to dominate console gaming, it will likely stagnate like Windows and Office have.

...clumsy two-piece joystick...

I agree with most of what you said, the "two piece joystick" thing I actually really like. I like that in many games I dont have to have my hands right togther in a carpel tunnel aching position for long periods of time. I can have the remote blasting stuff on screen or whatever and the nunchuck resting on the arm rest or on my lap. Most of the good games have multiple control schemes.

My brother says I have "ogre hands" so the remote nunchuck thing really helps.

There is a real lot of shovelware but it doesn't really bother me because there are some real gems in there and Game Informer or any of the other good game mags will find them for you.

We're English speakers.  I'm talking about the Doki Doki Panic rehash.

I dont think Amiga_nut likes nintendo enough to give any Japanese games that he can't read a fair shot. lol

Favorite consoles (in no particular order):

Currently my Xbox 360 is great - Gears of War and the Call of Duty games are awesome.  Xbox live is really nice.  Microsoft has developed something I really like!

*Sega Genesis - Street Figher 2 CE and Mortal Kombat ruled. This system had so many games and the first console to take me away from pure amiga gaming.  Heck it had the same processor and little better graphics than my A500!

Sega Dreamcast - Soul Calibur, Tomb Raider, Virtua Tennis and Crazy Taxi are just awesome!  This system was so underrated... shame MS and Sega couldn't keep there deal together... if sega did the hardware and MS kept their OS, the Xboxes today could be known for quality hardware.  You can't kill a sega system - unless you pour water on it!

*PS1 - I never got tired of the Original Tomb Raider and Tekken games.

PS2 - Some good FPS and God of War changed gaming for everyone - and really showed the hardware had been under utilized for years.

Xbox 1 - Have you played Black, Ninja Gaiden or Halo(s) ?- those games made this one of the best used console purchases I ever made!

*NES - I still remember all the maps in Zelda

Colecovision - nothing but love for one of the great originals... still got it in a closet somewhere!  I also loved all the old atari consoles.  I had a 2600 and 7800 and only the colecovision was better to me than the those at the time.  Of course, my C64 kicked all of their buts until my Amiga arrived, but we are talking consoles - not great gaming PCs!

Gamecube - another great used deal and I actually liked Mario Sunshine.  And I can play Mario Tennis ALL day long!

Note: * means I bought it new - didn't wait for used or discounted.

Least favorite:

Wii - The Super Mario Galaxy was great, but there is a real lack of "GREAT" titles and since I could make a profit when I sold it - so I did.  I'll wait till I can get one for $50 before playing SMG2, etc.

Sega Saturn - Virtual Fighter sucked so I stayed away. I just didn't like the Sega titles at the time... nothing stood out as amazing to me and the PS1 launch titles where more impressive.  If I ever come across a deal on a used one with a bunch of games I'll give it another chance, but until then it stays on my least favorite list.

N64 - games too damn expensive and the graphics sucked, besides the PS1 kicked its ass.

SNES - pretty graphics but sports games and fight games played "slower" than on my Genesis - so my friends with SNES just lost out!

Also, I want to add a prediction - Console gaming is about have another decline.  The main reason I have played more console than PC over the last few years is  because I could always get console used games for a lot less.  After about 3 months a $60 console game can usually be had for less than $30 via ebay or CAG. On the PC it usually has to be a sucky game to get that deal that fast.

But, with the onset of digital distribution and new games coming with one time only codes - that when you buy the used game you have to pay an additional $10 to reactivate multiplayer/online then you are essential killing the  used market.

So why not just join Steam and get many of the same features Xbox live and PSN give without annual fees (Xbox live Gold anyway) along with instant buy and install?

For his tenth birthday I bought my son a Gamecube.  All his mates had PS2's and Xboxes.  They'd come over just to play Mario Kart 4 player, Super Smash Brothers, Fifa, Warioware, Mario Party, F-Zero GX, Mario tennis..  And then they'd take turns in Resident Evil 4,.  But it wasn't "cool" to have a Gamecube.

IMO games ARE about fun, and competing with REAL friends.  How many FPS's do you need to play in your lifetime?

People say not many third party titles that are any good on Nintendo consoles. Even IF that was true, a Wii or Gamecube has enough AAA Nintendo titles to justify the price of the console.

Most loved:
Playstation.  Tons of ground breaking games.  FFVII, Gran Tursimo, Metal Gear Solid, Soul Blade, Resident Evil, etc.  Bought my PS 2 days after US release (9/11/95) and still have it!  My brother and I played the heck out of Ridge Racer for the first month.

Most hated:
Gamecube.  Bought on release date.  This was a real disappointment in the long run.  So few third party games worth playing, no network support, etc.  (Yes, I know PS didn't have network, but the gamecube's contemporaries did...)

BTW, both haven't aged well when viewed on HD screens.  PS1 looks good on PSP though!

Loved?

TurboGrafx - 16 or PC Engine is it more commonly known.

First system with CD-Rom technology!!

TurboGrafx is like the Amiga of the video game world.  It really was an amazing piece of hardware.  Well, thought out for it time with lots of expansions, yet is mostly forgotten by everybody.

TurboGrafx has some really amazing games (especially graphics wise on CD) and it has some real crap games.  But it was like the Amiga in that way too, as it seemed anybody that wanted to make games for it could and did.

Others I loved,
2nd would probably be SNES
NES of course will always have a place in my heart.
N64
Wii
CD32 (I miss you!)

I never owned a Dreamcast but I wish I had.  The graphics are amazing for it's time.
