Hi all!
I've never used an Amiga before a couple of weeks ago. Thing is, I was still a toddler when Commodore declared bankruptcy.
I knew a lot about Commodore VIC-20s and 64s, I had a VIC-20 when I was younger. So yeah, my uncle gave me an Amiga 500 a couple of years ago. Never played with it since I did not have the Workbench disk.
A couple of weeks ago, I asked him for an Workbench 1.3 disk. I then played a bit with the Amiga 500, made a null-serial cable, downloaded the trial of Amiga Explorer.
He also gave me an Amiga 1000, didn't worked though. So I had to open it up, re-seat everything, etc. It finally worked.
Ohh boy, am I having fun :P
I have an old Amiga 2000HD here, that has been stripped of all parts except the motherboard and it's chips. I tried making an ATX power supply, but no go. So I guess I'll keep it for spares.
I'm having so much fun that I've bought an Amiga 3000 from a guy from Ontario. Waiting for it now :)
If anyone has any tips for an Amiga newbie, go a head. Or any tips as to what I "need" to do with my "new" Amiga.
Thanks for reading :)

Welcome aboard :)
Well, given the possibility that the machine you are getting will be older than you are, you should check the state of the battery at least. I'm not sure what the A3000 is like in this regard, but battery leakage in other models, including the A4000 has proven to be a problem after so many years.

Yeah, I was thinking about changing the battery to a PC-style battery

So JValdron... as a younger fella, what got you into the Amiga? What sparks your interest? How do you think it comapares to other computing experiences? Do you see the appeal of how the OS is put together vs. PC or MAC.? Are you just happy to tinker around with these devices?
-
Well, basically, I always had an interest in old things eheh.
I got a collection of almost all video games console that was made after the NES.
But since I've played a lot with my VIC-20 when I was younger, and I had an Amiga 500 for a couple of years here, I said to myself I should try to boot that machine and play around with it.
Playing with it made me realize that those machines are totally awesome. They do amazing graphics and sound for old machines like that.
I never tried more than an Amiga 500, so I don't know all the power of the Amiga.
If I can make a good working Amiga workstation that is fast and that I can code my PHP stuff, well I'll be all set :) But it's more for learning about the computers that kinda started it all.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Amiga. Well I would definately get an AGA machine also:) An Amiga 4000 is nice. The Amiga has a ton of great software like 3d rendering and animation (Lightwave, Aladdin 4d, Turbo Silver), 2d art and animation (Deluxe paint series, Photon paint, Digi paint ect), Music composition software like Octamed and Aegis. Also there are great word processors (word perfect, pro wrote and more), great presentation software and of course excellent games. Some of my favorite games are the Shadow of the beast series, defender of the crown, alien breed series and so on. For great show of Amiga games look at LemonAmiga.com.

My advice to you. Send all of your Amiga hardware to me where it will be safe and sound. Otherwise you may develop a bit of an addiction which in the end will cost you hundreds of dollars as you'll always have that question in the back of your mind,"what else can I make this old girl do?" :)

You weren't paying attention. You're spouse mailed some of your amiga collection to him and since you had so much, you didn't notice the difference. You need to use Excel to keep track of your collection.

My Spouse?
My beloved Amiga would never do that to me!!! :)

Are you sure of what you assume? Don't you find it suspicious that my "uncle" gives me all those Amiga? ;)

welcome !
I would suggest you follow this large thread of a recent new user on Amigaworld.

At least he should keep it down as Ohio is one of the states where marriage between the Amiga species and humans was not allowed.
