Title: Wow, look what I found in the storage unit!
Post by: Acill on November 22, 2003, 03:53:12 PM
Well cleaning up the old storage unit out back I found a real blast from the past. My good old USR HST modem. How many f you used one of these in the past. I think just about every hard core amiga owner had one.

here is the kicker! I decided to plug it in and fire it up. To my surprise it connects at 28.8 to the dial ups servers I have found. I cant believe USR still supports these! I guess its the V Everything modes out there at the ISP or something.

*feeling of vague recollection*

I have the films (and a couple of the shows on tape.) I think they're great but I haven't watched them much. :-(

You were lucky. We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o'clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, out Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

With Windows.

So don't come talking about being lucky ... :-P

Wow, you must have been rich to be able to afford to BUY a modem. When I started computing, modems were so expensive, we had to build our own. I still have my first one somewhere. My mate and I used to dial up and exchange C64 stuff over the point-to-point link. Then someone invented the BBS. That was the end of the good 'ol days :-D

Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad would kill us, and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."

When I was getting my first modem, I was very seriously thinking about building it myself. In the end, I decided to go out and spend the $800 it cost to buy myself a 300 baud modem. It was agonisingy slow, but at the time.......

A little later I got into Viatel, and purchased a second modem specially for it, which ran at the blistering speed of 1200/75 baud. The two were totally separate, so they were connected together with a switch.

Incidentally, in those days, the modems did not have dialling facilities, so a telephone had to be connected with it as well, complete with ancient rotary dial, so that I could dial up the BBS.

I still have a 1975  300 baud rack mounted modem card somewhere....

Heh, yeah man.  I had 300 baud on the c64.  I had to dial the number on the phone, when the carrier signal came, I had to take the jack out of the phone and put it in the modem.

Those were the days.  A c64 disk (360K) took about 2.5 hours.  When 1200 baud came, it 'only' took about 45 mins.

:-? You guys had electricity?  I remember that we needed to connect our modems to the tin-can-and-string telephone system.

 And the magazine cover-disks used to be vinyl 45's...

@ thread

:roflmao: :python: :python: :python:

Man, I loved that sketch! All sat there in their smokers jackets drinking brandy (or whatever) and cigars attempting to get across their impoverished youth...

Anybody remember the really weird sketch with the aliens going around turning everybody Scottish so they could win at Wimbledon (insinuating that all Scots are hopeless at tennis)?

Graham Chapman was the hard pressed scientist / detective attempting to unravel the aliens' fiendish plot...

In the end it turned out to be some kind of mansized pudding thing.

Man, what were those guys taking?

@redrumloa
"Son, in my days a 300 Baud modem was king"

heck in my day we thought 300 baud was super fast because we were still using 6 cent stamps on our mail.

Remotely, though I do remember the one about the Scottsmen that where bombs.  Showing the guys crawling on their stomachs towards a ticking Scottsman. :-D

Or the "How Not to be Seen" sketch was probably my favorite.

300 Baud ?? OK, I admit it, I'm not THAT old ;-)

Just a tiny leaf thin mint..?

:-)

That's my favorite. Or more specificly; the futile attemt to take cover behind that flower-thingy.

But I really think Blackadder beat the crap out of Monty. Btw, is it true that the drummer in IronMaiden plays Baldric? :-) :-) :-)
