Title: NetSurf V1.7 for 68K
Post by: Tumbleweed on April 27, 2010, 07:27:43 AM
Has anyone downloaded and tried it yet? Looks to be faster than previous version.

Well done Artur!

Noticed it on AmiNet tonight, released to no fanfare, and tried it out.  It is unusably slow on my 4000D/060/50/PIV.  Think Windows Vista on 256MB slow.  But, I suspect that is the penalty for trying to run modern on legacy.  Eh, IBrowse works well enough for my purposes.

Its slower than iBrowse but they are not doing the same thing and its still being actively developed so it'll hopefully get quicker with each new version. Its faster than 1.6 though.

Understood, and I do not mean to denigrate NetSurf's development.  I certainly would like to see a more modern browser on Classic, just this release is unusable to me.  The last version was as well, but I try every release :)

It has the potential to be a truly outstanding Amiga browser, but untill it gets a complete overhaul performance wise, it will most likely remain as a bloated browser. Forget mutitasking while a page is loading, forget decent usage, unless you have 128MB of ram.

It is nice to see it is being improved though.

Every night I pray for a faster SDL, or a direct port to solve all these few huge annoyances.

Maybe if we were to establish a bounty for it we could encourage the development of a MUI version, which would be quicker.

it plots the layout upfront before it loads images which is good, yet you cant scroll while loading yet. all in all i think not the speed is major issue but responsiveness which really wouldnt be easy to improve with sdl. i dont believe an amount of bounty to be expected will motivate anybody alas, and all the able coder an amiga seem to be busy with something already, but good luck with it.

Artur has put a ot of eefort into developing netSurf for M68K over the last year or so (going by the release dates from v0.7 to the current). I'm sure he will contiue to develop it but if we could encourage other developers to help out say with a MUI front end with a bounty we may move quicker to a version of NetSurrf for M68K that appeals to a broader range of users than currently.

Looking at download stats on Aminet there were 355 dowloands of netSurf M68K in April this year and there have been 5769 downloads in total, so I think therer is usfficient community interest to see it continue to develop and possibly to support a bounty.

I've never set up a bounty before but I am more than willing to contribute and help out to set one up.

I was expecting that clipboard support for the URL gadget would have been added in this version. How difficult can it be? I (and i bet many others) am using NetSurf in conjunction with IBrowse/AWeb to access websites which doesn't work well with Amiga browsers, for reasons mentioned in the above posts. So, the ability to copy/paste URLs is crucial.

Requirements for RiscOS 30MHz ARM 6 computer with 16MB of RAM....

There is no other explanation than SDL, why Amiga OS requirements are so much higher

Then, it doesn't work in some setups.

you need press the buttons to do the clipboard.
the amiga clipboard keys do not work.

see here the planed things on netsurf.they want do new platform independent input boxes etc.

so all need is be patient and hope that they give not up developing

http://wiki.netsurf-browser.org/Development_Plan

that netsurf is slow have nothing to do with SDL.

but even when use no SDL, its a whole Shit that the amiga GFX Cards use diffrent pixelformats.

because every modern browser support only 1 pixel Format and convert the Data to it.
and netsurf support on Big Endian Systems rgb16

that mode is on voodoo 3 gfx cards buggy and other gfx cards do not support it.

On amiga classic is the bad thing, that the system is big endian but the gfx cards mostly work little endian.

And before netsurf is not more complete i have no time to spend more work to make the netsurf GFX Big Endian Output for little endian driven GFX Cards.

Ive seen this browser in action on a PPC Amiga (think it was a SAM) at the Amiga Revival fair and I really liked it. I hope they can finetune it a lot more so it works on a 68k at a tolerable pace. Like one of the other posters pointed out, the RiscOS specs are quite low so the Amiga should be able to handle this too.

Ill download it when there is a faster version :)
