After 3 years and finally getting my A4000 mother board back, I reconnected all my hardware only to have the SCSI Hardrive no longer functioning properly.
So i figured i would install an IDE drive back on, and installed a 52x Speed CD Rom, now so far i was able to install WB 3.1 but when i tried to configure the CD icon to Unit 1 and editing with ED, the system just hangs, but if i disconnect the CD Rom, it boots up, and yes the CD Rom is fine.
Now i haven't used a IDE in over 15 years and can't remember how to configure the setting, could someone please give me a simple reminder of how it was done from scratch, Thanks.

It shouldn't hang, it should just fail to mount. The 3.1 IDE driver does not support CD drives. You need an additional ATAPI driver like the one included with IDEfix97.

Have you configured the hard drive and CD Rom as master and slave? If not set the jumper (s) on the ide hard drive as master and on the CD drive set the jumper (s) for slave.
In workbench make sure you have the CD configured in Devs/dosdrivers/CD0.

Thanks for the reply's, I don't have a copy of IDEFix 97 and i was in the understanding this required registering which apparently is no longer available, also i need my CD Rom so I can Install OS 3.9 which I've been informed doesn't need IDEFix, and yes, the Hardrive is the master, and the CD Rom is slave CD0.

You can use atapi.device from the IDEfix package without registration. It just nags with questions. And you can throw it away once you have created the emergency disk for OS 3.9.

IDEFIX97 is available from Aminet as Shareware but without registration, will nag on start up.
You can take the nag, out of the startup-sequence, but I did not say that :)

Problem is the A4000 can't access the net until i can access the CD i have all my internet stuff on. so is there a way to access the CD Rom without IDEFix ? and what are the settings ? surly there is a way, people were using CD drives before IDEFix.

http://aminet.net/disk/cdrom/Atapi_PnP300.lha
and its update http://aminet.net/disk/cdrom/AtapiPnPUpg.lha
Or you could use http://os.amigaworld.de/download.php?id=29

so is there a way to access the CD Rom without IDEFix ?
No. Not on the internal IDE controller.
surly there is a way, people were using CD drives before IDEFix.
There were similar software packages from other vendors, for example the SpeedUp system made by VOB. Or you can use a third-party IDE controller which supports CD drives. Or a SCSI controller + SCSI CD drive.
The IDE driver of the internal IDE controller definitely does not support CD drives. You *need* another driver or another hardware.

The Amiga can read PC floppies if you run PC0 from Storage/DosDrivers.

Was it so that 3.1 has a CD.device ?? it is poor but works?
But I ques that you need to download dc filesystem with PC and use 720kb disk to transfer it to your amiga.
But IdeFix isn't you only possibility
OS 3.5-3.9 has a scsi device wich works wit IDE cd roms
ASIM CDFS is freeware now you get from?? aminet??
Xetec CDx http://www.baetzler.de/amiga/
Babel CDROMfs http://babel.de/amiga.html

No. Only CD32 has the cd.device. WB 3.1 has a CD file system, but it is of no use if the IDE driver does not recognise CD drives.

An A4000 can read 1440KB disks, too.

He needs a CD driver to access the OS 3.9 CD. That's the problem here. Please read from the beginning before you reply.
ASIM CDFS is freeware now
No.
Xetec CDx
Is a file system only. Still needs ATAPI driver for the IDE bus.
Babel CDROMfs
Is a file system only. Still needs ATAPI driver for the IDE bus.
