Title: Original Amiga 1000 Dealer's Sales Kit & more
Post by: save2600 on April 19, 2010, 03:12:00 PM
Yesterday, a buddy dropped off a bunch of Amiga goodies for me (thanks Darrin!) and in one of the boxes was a complete Amiga folder that is a Dealer's Kit. What's so cool about this package is how high quality the card stock paper is and the way they marketed the system to dealers. Fit and finish is top notch. I have never seen sales literature for the A1000 before, so imagine my excitement  :)

Each individual sheet has Commodore's Corporate Mission Statement, Amiga Products Authorized Price Sheet shows the dealer cost and MSRP, Dealer Co-Op Plan, Dealer Support and 3rd Party Software Developers.

Single-sided horizontally laid out literature, printed on glossy, shows a pic of the hardware, large colored Amiga Checkmark and specs for the A1000 itself, 1080, A1050, 1010, 1020 and the 1680. Extremely well done.

In another find were several incredibly detailed schematics of the Amiga 1000's expansion port, specs of the case, shielding, etc. Since everything is so blown up and explained in clear detail, they're more like blueprints than electronic schematics. This package was put together for somebody that applied to be a developer for the machine and is complete with correspondence explaining that from Commodore.

Lastly, I found a different set of sales literature for the original Amiga rollout products. This time though, they're vertically laid out (as found on the more modern promo literature) and are double sided. Tons of info reveals more specs than we're used to seeing also, such as the frequency response of Paula, ohms output, etc.

Among all the goodies, the sales literature & Dealer cost sheet are the most exciting to me. Oh and there's a few super-early dot-matrix printed "mags" too (AmigaMail it's called) that talk about our beloved machine  :)

As a huge A1000 fan, all of this stuff is very neat to have and adds value to my original Amiga collection. What I am wondering of course though, is if any of it might be "worth" more than simply the paper it's been printed on?  lol  How many complete and unused 'Dealer's Sales Kits' are there floating around?

I'm thinking all of this would look nicely displayed in acrylic sign holders, each respectively standing next to their boxed counterparts. Of course, I don't have the room to set aside an Amiga 1000 museum, but that's pretty much the sort of collection I've built up over the years.

Thanks for sharing this. By the figures it shows that the dealers worked with 35% margin for the computer and the monitor and with 40% margin for the expansions, which were cheaper but bought less.
I wonder if the A500 was sold with the same margin ratio or the margin percentage raised in order to attract more dealers.

That would be my hunch. When you think about it, the A500 was marketed for quite a while. Same with the A2000, so we can only assume manufacturing the same boards and parts all those years would have a positive impact on cost. Having been in retail most my life, margins and sales figures are really interesting things. lol

Funny though, I don't remember being able to yank a computer sales guy around like everyone tries to do today. You know... when you're in a store where there's room to haggle. Hell, some stores even encourage(d) it like Highland Superstores (now defunct), Circuit City (before they took their salespeople OFF commission) and American TV (still in business and practice the same tactics to make a sale) - but Amiga prices at brick and mortar stores always seemed to have integrity and uniformity. You could nary get a "deal" through most of the cataloguers back then too. Only a couple stand out that always had lower prices than everyone else.

Nice find. Any chance of scanning in some of those color prints?

Yeah, never fear... I'll get around to scanning 'em one of these days.  :)
