Denny Atkin wrote a book with that title back in 1993. It was filled with ways to live with flicker, how to reduce disk swaps, methods keeping commodore's original system files separate from those added by installers, hard drive organization, etc. There were hundreds of excellent, common sense strategies on every Amiga topic.
Seventeen years later, I'm curious what strategies other ppl have come up with. If lots of ppl contribute, this could grow into an incredible resource. For S & Gs, here are a couple of mine:
1 create a Vault: a place to keep keyfiles, your dopus config, years of bookmarks, or anything unique to a system that couldn't be reloaded in the event of a HD crash. It doesn't have to be big and that would make it easy to back up and have multiple copies.
2 To extend the life of my floppy drives, I've reversed the direction of flow of my cooling fan and put a cleanable filter on the intake side. Dust is no longer drawn into the mouth of the drive. This may not be for everyone, especially hot running systems.
3 Installation scripts usually look for a volume named Work:. If you're particular about the organization of your applications, don't name a partition Work.

Keep several copies of your serial numbers and store them in multiple places including electronic versions stored with your disks.

i store all my amiga and commodore stuff on a raid5 nas, also i have a copy of the files on a hard disk that is only used as backup, after updating the backup, the hard disk is stored, and also i have all stuf on dvds. i work on a data recovery company, so thats the reasson why im a bit exaggerated

I always have 2 bootable partitions at the beginning of my HD - one is the primary system partition and the other is the exact copy of that (periodically updated). Whenever I do any potentially system altering changes I do them first on the secondary partition and if everything works, only then apply them to the primary partition. It's only common sense, but it took me a while to get used to the routine :)

This is one of my favorites. On those systems that I could afford 2 HDs, it is even more secure.

Since I've added USB to my A4000 I've taken to copying the contents of the entire drive to a flash drive. If a drive fails it's easy to recover.
BTW, Denny's book still has great tips and covers the OS up to 3.0. I worked for Denny and wrote articles for most of the magazines he edited. If you've got an XBox you'll find that Denny is still offfering Tips and Secrets. Last I checked he was the chief game guy at Microsoft in Redmond....
