Title: CompactFlash for Amiga
Post by: drewz21 on April 17, 2010, 01:11:28 AM
A few questions on changing from my internal A1200 HD to using an internal CompactFlash card instead.  I've got a SanDisk 4GB Ultra

1.  Will it be faster or slower than the hard drive?

2. How long would/could it last?  Read/Writes and such.

3.  Any tips on setup/configuration?

4.  Any other info you think I should know in considering this?

Appreciate all the help!

1.  Slightly faster due to no waiting for mechanical parts.  The bottleneck is usually the 1200's IDE interface, though.

2.  You'll be bored with it long before it dies.

3.  4Gb is easy, OS 3.1 can HDtoolbox it and format it just like any other drive.

4.  Hard to go wrong, really, it's just like a silent, low power hard drive.

Just reinforcing Tone's reply

1) as fast as the AMIGA can accept.  Access times and speeds will only be limited by the PIO IDE interface.

2) As far as the Amiga is concerned, that doesnt write to disk EVERY BLOODY SECOND, you are likely to replace the Amiga before you replace the CF.  I have a 4GB Sandisk Ultra.

3) Ummmm, nup.  I gota 4GB card, works BEAUTIFULLY in 3.1 (Only 2GB boot right now).

4) What do you want to know ?, Amiga is SILENT (Except the Floppy step, but that is patchable), less heat, ummm what else.  My CF-IDE adapter has a RED led on the board (Flashes for activity), every time it boots up, I get a red Glow from the A1200's Ventilation grill on the top.  .
