Hi,
I am almost there!
I have installed amitcp and followed a guide that didn't quite match up (perhaps I was using a newer version of the amitcp).
I am using the netcomm 3c589 compatible drivers and must be so close to getting it working!
I can ping my gateway 192.168.0.1, the amiga has ip address of 192.168.0.101, subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
The dns servers are set to my ISP dns servers and can't configure what else I can do.
I can't ping www.google.com.au (http://www.google.com.au)
But I can ping other devices that are on my network.
Any help greatly appreciated.
-
ok back to the drawing board, found out I had installed amitcp2.2 intead of 3.0b2
I've set it up as per exactly here
http://www.acc.umu.se/~patrikax/amiga/guides/AmiTCP_Install/
When I try do a ping now it says
amitcp/ip version 3 or later must be started first
Any help once again greatly appreciated.

I am sorry, I am more of a Genesis TCP-IP kind of guy, I like things a bit simpler. You can always try the demo at http://aminet.net/comm/tcp/gendemo104.lha
By the way, I believe you can install AmiTCP 4.x demo without any limitations from http://aminet.net/comm/tcp/AmiTCP-demo-40.lha
Keep me updated! :)

I am going to keep going with this.
I am almost there, I renamed the driver device to network.device, since amitcp does not like numbers in the device driver.
I followed the guide to the letter but am now getting no route to host
in the amitcpip log I am getting inetd[c9692a8] daytime/tcp: bind: can't assign requested address
Any ideas guys?
-
okay just installed amitcp version 4.
It does select me ethernet but doesn't let me specifically pick out the driver I wish to use, only the standard ones, what do you do from here?
-
ok I give up!!! :(
-
Dont give up! AmiTCP is well known to be complicated. I know there should be someone over here that has experience using it, and will hopefully come to rescue.
If not, remember there are other TCP-IP stacks that are much more easy to configure!
Be patient.

Seriously did you think I would give up....I'm still at it!!!!
I am now using Genesis and it is getting stuck on host name and domain name obtaining.
** this is compounded by the fact the guy that I bought a usb mouse adaptor on ebay almost a month ago has only posted it last week! Having fun using the amiga keys and the arrows!!! :-)

Using keyboard only! :0
You are my hero :))
Is your internet provider using fixed IPs or dynamic IPs? If it is dynamic, then that is probably your problem. Check http://aminet.net/search?query=dhcp for solving that matter.

I have set it up for static 192.168.0.10 subnet 255.255.255.0
gate way 192.168.0.1
dns servers is set to 192.168.0.1
I can't ping 192.168.0.1
I can ping my own ip address 192.168.0.10
The light on the adapter when genesys is running is turned off, as soon as I disconnect from genesys it turns itself back on.
Once disconnected from genesys I can click on connect but it will no longer connect and have to reboot.

I think I'm going to try Amiga OS 3.9 and see if that fixes it and then purchase it.
Where is the place to buy it, is anyone here selling an original that may have upgraded to 4.0->

Hi,
It's all a bit fuzzy now, but did you use the pcmcia software fixes from Aminet ? I think without them you have to pull the pcmcia card out then put it in again to make it work. It was something like "cardreset.lha".
I do have a pcmcia ethernet card working well here with Genesis and OS3.5

Yes I recalled that, I can ping the ip address of the card itself no worries, but not of the gateway or anything else.
I was so close with amitcp version 2 but really need something that is more up to date and that will work with ibrowse.
It just seems rather strange that none of the more modern utilities will work properly with this card.

I guess it will be something very simple when you find it, but I can't see much difference between your settings and mine. I can see (in Netconnect-GenesisPrefs) - Sana - specify Sana-II device = Devs:Networks/3C589.device Unit=0, and config file = Env/Sana2/

Yeah it is strange... can't believe I got it almost working on amitcp 2.0 but not on the others.
-
With respect to amitcp 4, IIRC it can't handle DHCP. I configured my router, which is using DHCP, to reserve a particular IP address for my A1200 (based on the NIC's MAC address). I'm also pretty sure the DNS address in amitcp is pointing to the router as well.
-
Just checked and the name server is indeed pointing at the router.

If this is an A1200 and a PCMCIA then you need to do the CardReset each time and put the card interface on line. I use MiamiDX to put the card on line and I use Samba to interact with the network I run a small script NMBD on my Workbench that I wrote to get the computer handshaking with other Windows based machines. This uses Samba
Genesis was easy to set up.. I have that also, but found Miami much easier to use. There is also a Samba Yahoo Group with some amazing Amiga network wizards on their... You have to wake them from their slumber, but does help.
As I say the trick is to put the interface online nothing will happen till you do that...
Tell you what.. I will go fire up Genesis and see how I set mine up for you. Back in two Amiga ticks. PS I have the CardReset on the Workbench nothing will happen until I click it. Just look for the orange light on the network adaptor.

Well I've just installed OS3.9 for testing purposes in WINUAE and will try it out, if it works out I will be purchasing the software if it does not work I'll go back to my legal copy of Workbench 3.1.
I'll be back in a few ticks and let you know how it goes in a real Amiga 1200.

@tasmanian_guy
You said you were able to ping devices on your network but you just couldn't resolve external addresses, right?
Try changing your amitcp settings for name resolution and use your router's IP address. Works fine for me.
-
OS 3.9.... Thats cheating....
Anyway first up you need to realise that to get various flavours of networks working you would need to have your other machines with fixed IP addresses and not set automatically. The post 98 Win machines did make this a tricky and annoying process. My XP machine sends out signals to the Amiga and sends the SCSI external into a tiss trying to resolve handshaking.. That machine is on Auto IP so it just gets confused about the Amiga. Thats why I have Win98 machines for storing Amiga data and link to those using Samba and running NMBD.
OK:
Next to get the A1200 to interact with the router and broadband I had to set the interface through Miami with DHCP ticked. Good and bad that. With that ticked you cannot see your fixed IP address on your network and you get an annoying message. That is why I set up two interfaces... One for my local network and one for the broadband and the router so I can use YAM mailer. Works a treat.
So to Genesis:
First up get two applications... SCOUT and SnoopDOS... Both are great for trouble shooting .
Fire up your CardRest Tool...
Genesis uses AmiTCP and from the Snoop..doggy..dog log you get loads of AmiTCP references...All pass OK on my machine
LIBS: Genesiskey.library
LIBS:OwnDevUnit.library
AmiTCP refs:
libs/genesis.library
db/passwd
db/utm.conf
libs/genesislogger
db/genesis.conf
AmiTCP.config
.......hosts, networks, services, protocols, reslove.conf,inet.access
and sockswrapper.conf.
plus Devs/inet-mountlist
and Devs/netinfo.device
Now I can't connect cus I have set the software to run a modem on dialup.
It will work with a modem connected.
I use Miami
I wouldn`t have given up. Dont know what A1200 you are running but OS3.9 can slow a base machine to a crawl. I still use 3.0 for my main Amiga.
PS I also had to run the software to set up the PCMCIA network card which is a NE2000 cnet.device and Env: Sana2 Not all these cards work by the way I have struggled with a number until I found one that would work.

Thanks for everyone's help, well I have discovered something going through this process.
Yes I have cheated, but least I get to support the Amiga community by purchasing 3.9 which I'll do next pay.
It appears the pcmcia card adapter only works with the cable in a certain way, guess that is okay and has made configuring it up a bit of a nightmare because it could of been working the whole time, I'll look into more tomorrow I've had enough for today.
Having said that now, it is working under OS3.9 so YAY thanks for everyone with their help! Phew!
My Amiga is a 1200 rack mount system with 68030 50mhz, 50mhz fpu (blizzard 1230), 2 gigabyte cf, amigamaniac svhs, lcd monitor.
Aweb seems to ask alot about cookies, is there a way to automatically acccept cookies, it is driving me nuts without a mouse (for the moment).
Once again thanks everyone!

Hi
OS3.9 manages to deal with many of the issues from 3.0 and 3.1 which you needed to manually set up. I discount 3.5 by the way. Trouble with 3.9 is that you pay with speed if you don`t have a system with better gear. I have 3.9 on an accelerated A1200 and I find it a pig. Too slow.
Anyway... good luck. I use my A1200 for mail only given the internet standards of bloat generate endless streams of images and scripts which slow down browsing. You need a good graphics card and loads of memory. I stay retro style but have advanced networking to PCs that do the grunt internet work and then simply take the loot to the Amiga for all the fun and games.

Yeah the Amiga 1200 is not going to be my main pc, I just wanted to get it on the net to see what the experience was like and the learning experience.
It was fun and amazed I got amigaos3.9 installed in winuae faster than I got the Amiga on the internet :-)
Now to install whdload, kickstart files, and Amiga games back on (again).
