Title: Are you interested in making your own strategy game -easily-?
Post by: Im>bE on November 20, 2003, 02:02:38 AM
My already complete freeware game 2Decide (http://de.aminet.net/aminet/aminet/game/think/2Decide.lha)
would dearly like more themes and campaigns.

It basically is a fully fledged strategy game construction kit
and comes with a level editor,
so that when you have made -your- theme
(or you and your friends perhaps...?)
you can make campaigns for it.
(with briefing/story text and all)

I have already done this,
and it was great fun!
(3 complete themes + a theme by another cool guy)

If this game gets more support,
I might get into coding for it again
because its real easy to add more features
and I am pondering if I should make it become
the first game that can be both turn based
AND realtime, by choice from the user.
But for me to get enough motivation,
I now wanna see if anyone is interested
in either making themes or campaigns,
or just give me ideas on how to make it better,
of wich you then will get credit for.

It will stay freeware and opensource as it is now.

Please ask if you have any questions.

PS: The game multitasks and does not have any sound, so that you can listen to your favourite music while you play.

I -REALLY- wish I had a website
where themes and campaigns could be uploaded
and such things.

But I dont. :(

And I didnt think anyone was interested enough anyway,
since noone said anything when I uploaded it to aminet.

Thanx for being interested. :)

Want me to set you up with 2decide.amigadeals.com ?
(Did I mention I also own my own hosting company?)

I can grant you that subdomain, ftp access, file space, etc.. Could even slap up a nice forum (php/mySQL) on it if you think you'll need one. How much $? I hear you saying... Well for you, today, cause you got a lucky face. Free. :)

Let me know if you'd like to do that. Come to think of it, if there is enough demand from Amiga authors, maybe I'll make a new website www.amigacoders.com and let aspiring Amiga authors host their stuff there. Hmm, that sounds like work though.

Im not sure if there is any
on the net anymore. :(

Only if people are interested enough
or else it probably wont be used. :/

If you only want to host a few files temporarily I could put them online as well if you email them (and they're not huge :-D )

Sounds like a great idea :-)

heh, what was I thinking...?
how stupid can I get??

I actually thought
that someone would be interested
in a game that actually exists.
HAHAHA.. IM SO STUPID!...

Now I know that we should talk about
and support games that doesnt exist.
yes, thats the way to go.

I am truly sorry,
I should have started a thread
where I post a screenshot of some other game
and say that I need people to make a similar one.

my bad...

@Im>bE

Did you get my Pmail?  A combination RTS/Turn based strategy game would kick ass :-D

Yes, but obviously turnbased and realtime
cant work togheter,
so I would probably make some new options like:

Gameflow - Turn based
           Pseudo real time
           real time

I have some ideas of how to make it possible,
but unless noone makes any more
themes or campaigns,
then im not sure if I should bother...

Simply:
If anyone support this game,
then ill support it too.

Just jump into it and make something,
its not that hard. ;)
Maybe just a one mission campaign,
or perhaps a new unit for a theme...?

PS: you can write your own credits
in the themes and campaigns you make.

Now I have added visibility/exploration options
for custom games and in the mission/map editor.

The different options are: (ranging from least to most visibility)
1-See only around units at any given time.
2-See around units, but remember explored terrain.
3-Always see explored areas. (common in many games)
4-Know the world terrain, but still only see explored areas.
5-See everywhere.

'see' really means 'look for enemy units'.

Nr 3 is used in games like dune 2 and civilization.

This feature of visibility
means that you can make missions
where the enemy is very hidden all the time
or missions where enemies are always clearly visible,
or any other in the list... its up to you.

How many games do you know
that has options for visibility/exploration?...

Now ive done some misc improvements,
and I am wondering
if I should make it hires interlace
(or optional between lores and hires),
and make hires gfx for all the themes.

Im eager to make this game more fun,
so if anyone have anything to say about it,
then please do, cause that will help me.

I see hires/lores/interlace and immediately think "oh well, I guess I can't play it.". I'm sure I'm not alone in that sentiment.

Any chance of making it RTG compatible? I'm not suggesting you abandon any native chipset compatiblity, but if you can run your game on RTG, you increase your potential userbase just like that.

Thats why I made it open source,
so that anyone can add support for anything they want.

I simply dont know how to add rtg support
plus I have little motivation to do so
since I dont have a gfx card.

But if someone sends me code in Amiblitz2
to support rtg, (wich noone will),
or develop their own version
with rtg, (wich noone will for sure),
then rtg is supported. Simple as that.

@Im>be

Alas, if it was written in C, I could help you. As for blitz, no idea. Perhaps a C port from the blitz would help matters, although if your code relies heavily on various high level commands for moving shapes and stuff, that gets very difficult.

I do assume that people have written some libraries to support RTG in blitz however. I'm pretty sure I've seen programs using them.

mmm you need something similar to fd2pragma:
http://www.aminet.net/dev/basic/NewFDConvert.readme (http://www.aminet.net/dev/basic/NewFDConvert.readme)

use it to adapt the cgx includes... I saw a 68k AGA CGX driver somewhere (this way you'll be able to test your code)... it was from the same guy that did a Trio64 P96 driver for Mediator

Remember to use an ASL requester to let the user to choose the screen and use the OS graphic.library functions.

to use ASL and other OS functions check:
http://www.aminet.net/dev/basic/GetScreenMode.readme (http://www.aminet.net/dev/basic/GetScreenMode.readme)
http://www.aminet.net/dev/basic/BlitzOS.readme (http://www.aminet.net/dev/basic/BlitzOS.readme)

I can't help you because:
-I don't have time
-I don't code anything non-system friendly
-On amigaos I only code in C
