Title: What Software are you gonna need for OS4?
Post by: Arst on November 19, 2003, 09:52:48 PM
A minimum for me is the following:

(all native :P )
Webrowser
Irc client
ICQ client
FTP client
FTP server
CD/DVD iso ripper burner
mp3/media player
mp3/avi/ogg encoder
let not forget em development tools ^_^

Nero Cover Designer.

For some reason, that particular program typifies what I feel is missing on the Amiga that I need to use a PC for, and it's the first thing I think of.

A stable Web browser that is comparable to IE in features. Not that I like IE or anything, but a lot of sites require it nowadays, e.g. web banking, so a direct clone would be nice. :-)

Even if such a thing existed, what are the odds of it being bundled with OS4.0? :-)

a better way of putting it is to say OS4 needs a browser that is code compliant like Opera or a mozilla-like browser.
I don't want a browser for OS4 or MOS that has as many holes or is as stupid as IE.

in addition to what has already been listed, i'd like a good web-creating program like Quanta_pro on linux (that's what i use these days). and, ImageFX, of course.  :-D

A p2p client is a popular choice these days, apparently.

Also nice to have a recent port of Apache and other net tools like samba and privoxy.

Well, Since I discovered  Mediaface (http://www.neato.com/neato_prodtest_software.asp?class%5Fid=%5FMEDIAFACE4&cat=%5FSOFTWARE&mscsid=CM3WENMTRQCQ8JMQ4UJXUAUEV9KGDS57) I haven't bothered with any other software...

That link takes you to version 4 which is an unknown entity to me as I use the free version 2.

2 things:

-Software that lacks AMiGA (many will have seen/needed some kind of software, that is better on "other" platforms, or it's non-existant for AMiGA)

-The software shouldn't be buggy (even the best OS becomes crap if the applications cannot stand next to it).

As for the "native" versions, that would be nice but not necessary for apps such as IRC, ICQ etc... even the browser with the WarpDT now is flying on my CSPPC.

Office Suit (more word processor than anything) - MUST HAVE = MS office/word document support. This feature should be made easy by MS publishing their ML for documents to the community!!

Browser - duh! Must have uptodate javascript/uptodate HTML/XHTML/XML/XSLT support and a decent plugin archetecture to allow other components such as flash and java to be supported. Tabs would also be a welcome feature :)

Multimedia player - native support for more popular formats such as Xvid, Divx, 3ivx, Quicktime, Windows etc plus audio codecs - i feel that this is basicly already avaliable nothing to worry about, but its an appliation i want so i put it in

Avaliable gcc compiler either on a extra CD or downloadable, as well as developer documentation and a good IDE with gui builder... drag and drop window gadgets/widgets onto you'r program to build a GUI for your application!

Theres prolly a lot more like some open source games, such as Abuse, Xevil, Galaga, and maybe a tetrix clone.. this would be very easy to do, and im surprised windows doesnt come with good games (Win2k was an exception as it came with a cool pinball game, and maybe a few other things :))

Would that be Office compatable? Able to read/write Office documents. If not RTF and/or PDF would be good.

Assuming AmigaOS 4.0 feature level.

Needs;
1. An integrated development environment.
2. OO Case tools.
3. SQL services with management GUI.
4. Full Java implementation.
5. At least Netscape 4 level browser.
6. OLE services clone.

Wants
1. Office suites.
2. dotNET via open source MONO.
3. Sonic Foundry Vega clone.
4. PVR/DVRs.
5. Ulead Video Studio 7 clone.
6. MOYB clone (I need to do my tax return)...

what OS4 needs is a "killer" app. Even a hardware/software combo like the toaster/flyer would be the ticket. If you want to do Office stuff, accounting, or CD burning you might as well use a cheap x86 box with Linux/Windows to do that stuff. Walmart has a linux/x86 box with a 1.2 ghz Duron for $200.  The Draco is a good example of what AmigaOS was great for. Small, fast, and reliable.

I don't use chat or p2p software, so I can't comment on that...  ;-)

I also assume we're talking about stuff that comes with the OS.  For stuff that doesn't, hey, what *shouldn't* you have availabe?  :-D

1) Digital camera suite - The ability to download and organize photos into albums, full DPOF support for online ordering or printing, ratings by megapixel and quality settings (rather than pixel dimentions and technical JPEG metaformat gobblygook), and a proper, standardized naming system.  Slideshow screensavers and books on CD are nice, too.

2) Image viewer - More like ACDSee, less like IE or MultiView.

3) Seperate CD, Video/DVD, and Audio players.  I HATE all-in-one apps.

4) A tool to easily manage drivers, codecs, and other stuff people shouln't have to know about, but do, anyway.  It should also say if a product is 1st party or 3rd party, so users know what came from the manufacturer and what didn't.

5) A very simple DRAG-AND-DROP file converter.  I hate it when people send me screenshots in BMP format, and people bitch that they don't know how to convert PNGs into JPEGs, and so on.  Batch and whole-folder processing is a must.

6) Word processor that saves in RTF format, or similar - I can't stand people who use Microsoft Word or some other high-end office suite to write a damn memo!  You don't need a word processor to write a book report, but you do need a built-in dictionary.

7) An FTP client that works like a folder, and properly describes how CHMOD works - I despise all the CuteFTP clones with muti-windows, tree listings, ubiquious buttons galore...

8) Hardware information tool - A standardized way to monitor or update the BIOS, tell things like temperatures, fan speeds and internal problems, what accessories are in the computer, any special buttons you have on the front of your case (push a button and the machine schedules a backup, etc).

9) DECENT backup software - Something that doesn't just catalog your drive and duplicate files, but exports files onto any CD/Tape/HD/Filesystem/Network, and also ensures data integrity, instead of just making copies.

10) A very basic programming tool, like what AMOS used to be.  Open windows and perform scripts by pushing buttons, open a screen and blit graphics around, graph charts, play music, write games and HAVE FUN with your computer!  Decent mutimedia libraries for a GCC compiler would suffice in a pinch, but a very simple scripting language that combines the best parts of Java, Perl, and BASIC would be awesome.  The ability to write your OWN software was always one of the best things about the C64, Amiga, and Atari, and it's a shame PCs and Macs haven't followed up on that homely computer tradition.  The ability to easily make your own USB devices and drivers would rock, too, though that's a bit too narrow a market.  ;-)

For you, yes :-P  but how much power does the home user really need?. The regular user would never know it was a peice of junk until a year later when it wont run the latest apps very fast. It will still run all the office apps for several years. I thought about buying one to do all the basic accounting work for my business.  ;-)

Thats another fine app... although i'd want the ability to mount any device and be able to browse it like a file system... Windows actual allowed me to do this with my dads digi camera... Its great cause you dont needs lots of expensive software! And it should be damn easy to implement. I assume this is very unix/linux type of thing?

I'm not so sure a Killer App is needed. Killer Apps only draw people when there's a niche that's not already being met somewhere else. You'd be hard pressed to find that niche nowdays.

Nowdays, you'd be better working on how well rounded and useable your environment is, rather than focusing on a niche. Everyday common hardware and common software availability is the biggest feature you could have.

It's not the power, it's the build, reliability, and the fact it comes with Lindows.  Everyone who reviews it says it is basicly useless.

If you're not going to spend at least $400 for a complete system, you should get a used computer.  It's like buying a brand new economy car for $5,000.  What's the point?

I thought you could already do that, since memory cards are all formatted in either FAT12 or FAT16.  Of course, getting card readers to actually WORK on many computers is a hairy episode in itself, but I won't get into that.  ;-)

Yeah, it bothers me that Windows doesn't have the equivalent of "mount" or "assign" commands.  It does have the "Subst" command, but it only works occasionally, and can really raise hell if something goes wrong (I had a Win2K system stop booting, even in safe mode, due to a script error with the Subst command.  I ended up having to re-install the machine).

The ability to give actual names to volumes is one of the great things about the Amiga.  I despise drive letters, no matter how much easier it is to reassign them with 2K/XP.

copy/paste from the according MorphOS thread:

I am no geek. What i want is a system with the iMac concept, i.e. a system with internet-capabilities and programs for a SoHo environment where i can do sme work to be exchanged with what I do at work.

An small list:

-a fully comaptible (like Firebird) browser with full JavaScript and Java

- an email program like TheBat! 2 , i.e. highly customizable with templates etc. and PGP

- a full Office suite like OpenOffice

- a chat program similar to Trillian Pro 2.0 (i.e. featuring almost any protocol, skinnable, easy to use)

- a musicplayer like WinAMP

- Kaazaa, BitTorrent clients

- Palm Desktop or similar for full syncing

- a video/DVD-player with support for all sort of codecs, and i want these codecs too

- an image manipulation program for working on pics from a digital cam / from the scanner ( I am not even saying compatible with photoshop-plugins)

- a vector-based praphics program

- a fully skinnable OS that allows changing of every aspect of what is seen on the screen, including icons in 32-bit. And that the applications use these icons as well!

- memory protection. i don not want my whole system crash when one single app does

I do not say that one or the other isn't already possible. But to buy a new system, this is the minimum to come home.

Have fun,
McTrinsic

Diropus 5.x  or 6.x.

A browser which is updated.

IRC client which is not hiding inside MUI.

Installer that is bug free.

Free Devtools which does the job with a gui etc.

Unreal Tournament

Real 3d update or (both?) lightwave update.

soft synths.

bla bla

Instead of "Subst command", I use WinXP-Pro-SP1's "share folder" and "Map Network Drive" to create pseudo drives** .

**PS; A Firewall and adequate security regime must be in place.

Microsoft is leaning on *nix style “Dynamic Volumes” concepts i.e. a single logical drive that spans multiple physical hardware drives.

It’s not recommended to stray from Window’s standard directory structure since critical files are reference in absolute terms e.g. %SystemRoot%\ and ‘etc’.

I am surprised to see that so few seems to want these kind of apps; (???)

Photoshop. (Or, rather something similiar).
PPaint. (Straight port, with some updates maybe.)
Renoize. (Straight port! This one takes tracking into the next level, made by the Noizetracker dudes I believe!)

And, yes, me too wants all those standard apps...
