I have a set of 3.1 ROMs that are allegedly for the A4000.
The markings on both: K00985 and the other one reads U175 and the other U176.. These match the chip positions on the mobo.
However, my machine won't boot up with them installed.. I tried swapping them around too without any luck..
Can someone verify that these are indeed for the A4000?

Someone must know?

It could be that your CPU card is not 3.1 roms compatible? There were some issues in regards to early revisions of A3640 cards, however if that's not the case, you may have defective roms.
If you have installed them correctly (look where pin 1 goes and use it as your guide to correct orientation) and they didn't work, but swapping them with your old 3.0 Roms made the computer boot...then there is a very high probability that your 3.1 roms are faulty.
Try to install only the 3.1 roms and then boot with a "vanilla" A4000 configuration, before adding any expansions, or even memory. So boot with something like only the A3640 card, Floppy drive, 2MB chip ram...or the 030 cpu card, depending on which one you have, and no hard drive connected.

The only other possibility I can think of is that they're 4000T ROMs. Not certain.

@Matt_H:
Yeah, or even A1200/A3000 roms.
-
I have a CSmkII 060/50 in the machine..
It seems that the ROMs are faulty or for a different machine.. I was hoping that someone could have identified them from what I wrote above just to ease my mind.. :-)
They were sold to me as A4000 ROMs specifically, so this is why I'd like it verified. :-)

If you bought them from a dealer, by all means return them for replacement. Maybe even e-mail them the markings on the roms itself and say that you suspect that those are for a different 32-bit Amiga.

Unfortunately it was from a private individual many months ago..

Ack, that's bad. He probably assumed that A1200 roms were identical to A4000 roms and advertised them as such, however some people reported success into making an A4000 "power up" (I didn't say work fine, just power up) with A1200 roms. Weird.
Here's the deal:
The A1200 3.1 roms lack some important support which A4000 absolutely must have.
Not 100% sure on this, but maybe they lack Zorro II/III support, however with PCMCIA support which A4000 can't understand.
To confuse things even further, it's interesting that Commodore on the other hand made 3.1 roms fully compatible between A500/A600/A2000 series. A 3.1 rom for those Amigas carries full Zorro II support, full PCMCIA support (for the A600) and yet successfully manages to provide flawless operation no mater where you insert it, as far as the above mentioned Amiga models go, e.g. it autosenses the model make/environment and adapts!
On the A3000/A4000/A1200 side, they must be genuine roms made for a particular model, and are not interchangeable.

Make sure they aren't plugged in backwards. I had the right roms in the right sockets, but backwards, and it didn't boot. Turning them the right way fixed the problem.

Thanks for your concern, but they were in the right way around, unless someone decided it's a good idea to put the pin 1 notch on the wrong end of the chip..
Usually ROMs fry if you plug them in the wrong way around. You were lucky. :-)

I had a similar problem with 3.1 ROMs for an A1200. I have bought three sets in all; each from a different source; all sold as specifically for A1200. Each set disables the PCMCIA slot so it would seem that they are not A1200 but are they A4000? I don't know. I would be happy to sell you one set for £15 if you are interested in trying them out and will refund if don't work (minus postage). Of course, if someone knows of a specific way of identifying them?

The ROMs that I got for my A4000D from H&P years ago with OS3.5 said:
"K02459 OS3.1
A4000 U175"
and of course "U176" on the other chip.

Here's a list of ROM numbers and what they are for from my personal little reference list. Sorry that it's not formatted all nice-like, I can't figure out how to get tables to work on this forum. Maybe this will be handy to somebody.

I do not know for certain the part numbers for post-Commodore chip manufacture. (ie: Chip numbers from Amiga Inc) but this is what is commonly on the sticker over the rom itself. I think the K0#### part is actually the "serial number" of that ROM pair/set.
Kickstart 3.1 (40.68) U175 (K02399) ROM0 Amiga 4000
Kickstart 3.1 (40.68) U176 (K02399) ROM1 Amiga 4000
* 3.1 ROMS by ESCOM Are usually labeled with a silver sticker (some have a white sticker).
There is no real standard part number on the ROM(s) anywhere. The sticker describes which Amiga it's for (ie Amiga 500 / Amiga 2000, or, Amiga 600) and the kickstart version (40.63). Some of the ROMS from ESCom were simply CBM left overs and do have the original part stamped on them, in those cases they don't have an ESCOM sticker, and some are labeled with (A5947 | M32025).

Ah, figured as much. My ROMs don't have the model name anywhere, only the serial no and a small sticker denoting 3.1 and the chip position.
The chip position would point that these are indeed for the A4000, but I haven't verified that no other machine has the same positions.. (why would they?)
I guess I'll just have to try and read the contents with some prommer and see what's in them..
Thanks for the info, everyone.

I would expect that the A4000T has the ROMs in the same chip positions (U175/176). Most of the 4000T motherboard is common with the 4000D.
Of course, the main difference between them is that the 4000T had real SCSI on board (like the 3000). But I don't think that would stop it booting altogether, just make some error messages or crashes.
My bet is your ROMs are screwed.

Actually, 40.68 ROMS will work fine in a 4000T, you just have to use load software scsi drivers instead of the 40.70 ROM handling it. In the last few months of the 4000T distribution, they resorted to shipping them with 40.68 ROMs instead of the 40.70 ROMs due to a flaw in the 40.70's. Some people will argue until they're blue in the face about this, but thems the facts.
My bet as well is that those ROMS you have are screwed. (or one of them is)
