Title: Amiga 1200 Internal Cd Rom Drive
Post by: Retrofan on March 27, 2010, 12:52:22 AM
Hello: It isn't working right by now because I don't have the floppy drive working and have to wait for the replacement, and I had some problems so I must reinstall the Workbench, but it worked, and it was reading the OS3.9 cd it had into. The 4 photo wasn't taked the same day, and the Amiga wasn't closed at all, but it fits perfect as you can see.

As you see I have attached the power supply directly to the floppy drive connection, as it's (I bought it this way) out of order. I have to wait to the replacement, when I will connect both of them I have an A500 power supply, which is better to handle with both together. The hard drive is a 4gb cf card which draws less power. The accelerator in the photo is a Hawk Ram one, but I'm going to change it for a Blizzard 1260 that I bought in France for 211€. The thing is I have to wait for the floppy so I can install the software for it.

The difference with others it that is has the cd bezel made in the same plastic of the Amiga. I bought a replacement trapdoor at Amigakit and cutted it. I made a transfer sticker (the one you have at the keys) with the Compact Disc logo which I downloaded at Internet. I could have put any, as I found all of them, but I selected it because it's the same that appears at the Idefix program.

That is a reallly nice job. Most of the other hacks of this nature I've seen the drive looks out of place, but this looks like it was meant to be there. Fantastic.

The cd drive is a Samsung TS-L462: General Features: Black bezel 2 MB buffer IDE/ATAPI interface 24x CD-R write speed 10x CD-RW re-write speed 8x DVD-ROM read speed 24x CD-ROM read speed Automatic buffer underrun error protection technology 3.6 Mbps average data transfer rate 110 ms CD-ROM average access time 120 ms DVD-ROM average access time
The main thing it has to be IDE-Atapi interface.
Thanks for the comment. I did it the way I thought the Amiga people should have done at the time...

Another thing I changed and that you can see wrong in any other internal cd rom project is that the cd bezzel faceplate is at the same angle of the Amiga. I got it because I made it to fit exactly. I add a photo, but you can see it here: http://yfrog.com/3dabcd0017wj

Really, I mean really nicely done job here. I would love to have the same on my A1200 :o. I'm getting a slim cd drive also, but we'll see how that work's out .

Outstanding work my friend! Propably the most sophisticated CD-ROM hack I seen ever! It looks like it was designed that way :) Pitty I can't put one that way on my A1200 since the PicoPSU doesn't give the space to include one (not that it matters a lot for me hehe).
Cheers again mate

Very nice indeed. It's a pity the CDROM drive couldn't be fitted such that it ejects out of the opposite side to the floppy disk. I guess the CD Tray is too wide to fit there? My A1200 is boxed up at the moment (I'm paranoid about the dreaded yellow) so I can't measure that up to check.
But yes, very nice modification indeed.

Wow, yes that looks really good. I think it looks better to have it mounted on the side like that one is. It'd be even better again if a slot drive were used, though the case mod would be more complicated because it'd be much harder to cut the slot in the case and make it look neat. With the standard tray drive your cut-out is largely masked by the tray itself.
Very nice.

Yes, I have some other photos of it (I upload them). What I don't like is that the Amiga as you know hasn't space for it in that side, so if you insist to make it, you have to glue some plastic pieces to hide the right part of the cd drive... By the way, the Amiga opens backwards, so if the cd is at one side it is a problem. On the contrary, if you put it on the rear side, it fits perfect as you open it over it...

Hi: Just to add the last photo with the power supply cables. Now I have the floppy working and the cd, with Idefix, too. I've installed OS 3.9

excellent job. the most impressive thing is that you RETAIN THE AMIGA SHEILDING unlike some other modifacation iv seen.
you planned your modifcation well 9 out of 10.
you could have planned cables a little better.

Post by: Retrofan on April 08, 2010, 03:45:59 PM
Thank you very much. The thing about the cables is that to keep the sheilding I had to put them in the upper half part of the Amiga. Even a single ribbon cable (for the Cd for example) over the lowest part whith the sheilding on will contact with the keyboard. I had to reduce too the height of the ribbon cable plug for the Cd over the 4 device interface. Usually the plastic over the cable (where it plugs on) is around 5mm tall, and I filed it a little. You don't need so much plastic there! :roflmao:

Hi again.
What IDE interface are you using? Amigakit.com's 15€ Buffered IDE Interface maybe ? Just bought one and I'm having some probs with it...

Yes, just that; "4-Device Buffered IDE" at AmigaKit.com From left to right the connections are: Cd, nothing, Flash Card, Motherboard :hammer:
The red line always down.

I had a problem with booting. Just tested with power drawed directly from motherboard's floppy power connector, and finally got it booting =). Are you using IDEFix software ?
And my connections are same as yours. CD,nothing, compact flash, motherboard.

Yes, Idefix did the work. I have it installed (have bought it but still haven't received) in around 3 or 4 different places in the HD, but it only worked using the "Install Software" Icon in one of them. Do you like my new avatar?

Nice pic you got there  Do you remember when you istalled the IdeFix, what .device did you select ? My installation (FindDevice) finds only some strange tandemat_pcmcia.device and units 0 - 3 ? Could these be the IDE interface ports 0 -3 ? Odd stuff and not working =(...

Not sure, but seems that's it. Try with it. Mine was recognized as something...Pcmcia too.
Edit:
Well, not so sure. As I tried it so many times, don't remember exactly what was recognized...

Could you check what .device and unit you are using ? Go to drawer where you installed the idefix and use finddevice. What CD filesystem are you using to mount your CD-ROM ? You have been a real champ, thanks =)
Have to run now, I'll bomb you again with more questions, if thats okay .

Hello: The Idefix first detected some...pcmcia device, but it was when I tried the InstallS120 icon at Idefix. When I used the Install Software Icon, what I found (I've searched with Find Device) is: 3/ TSSTcorp/CDW/DVD TS-L462D/HS02 So it identified my model, TS-L462 without problems. In fact I've already tried a Dvd... Try the Install Software icon at the Idefix program...:rtfm:

I think that the cd-drive itself is incompatible with ide interface or idefix, because when I used my external usb cd-drive the idefix recognized it perfectly also as in your case it recognized the slim cd-drive.
I'm actually waiting for two drives to arrive at my post office, one of them used to be in a A1200, so it must be compatible. Thanks for all the info, have to wait the for drives now :sealed:...

Lauri what you must do is just search at Google your Cd driver name and Specifications. See if it has IDE/ATAPI interface, as mine has (although I don't really know what's that) that's the main thing.

Yes, it should be a IDE/ATAPI interface drive : http://www.teac.com/DSPD/support/sl_ide_dvd_cdrw/dw224e_overview.htm
The drive itself is from an 4 year old laptop that I have, and works under XP perfectly. I remember reading somewhere that TEAC drives are not that compatible with Buffered IDE Interface we are using, but that I'll find out when the other drives arrive at my door :)...
