Title: Networking
Post by: on December 11, 2002, 11:01:37 PM
Ok, I use cable internet through a lan card. Once an A500 is upgraded, is there a way to modify a card with the RJ45 (big phone) connector to work? Or perhapes a card or add-on for sale that I have not seen?

No, you need to get a true network card for your A500. I think there are some for that machine, but you'll have to search, start here:

There is fairly low-tech hack on aminet that gives the 500 a single Zorro II slot. Don`t see why you can`t plug a X-Surf or Ariadne into it.

Although to be honest, using the net on an A500 isn`t going to be fun. For mail, news etc it`ll just about do. But web browsing is gonna be dithered to hell and back in the 500`s low colour screenmodes.

The card was called a Slingshot Pro.  It was very low-tech.  The one I had (and all the ones I have seen) looked like a raw circuit board (no surrounding case).  I was always afraid to use it for fear of shocking myself or elbowing the card and breaking it to pieces.

If you have a "big box" computer with an ethernet card, run MiamiDX as
a gateway and connect the A500 to it with a serial or
parallel connection.  There are drivers which support this under
Miami.

:-( As I understand it, only the registered version of MiamiDX supports gateway functions, and Holger Kruse isn't accepting registrations anymore.
