I have A4000 Rev D with old IDE drive as primary and DVD-burner with as slave both connected to the one and only IDE port with the same rounded IDE cable. System is OS3.9 (not sure if Boing Packs are installed because this system was installed by another person from whom I bought it).
Now I try to temporarily remove DVD-burner to install another harddrive as slave and to format it.
The second harddrive is properly installed and jumpered, HDToolbox finds it properly and I managed to partition it too, but when I reboot and want to find its icon on Workbench main screen. It will never show up, but instead EMERGENCY_CD icon will appear even though DVD-burner is not connected.
Do I need to do a software dismount for DVD-drive or something so I could replace DVD with another hardrive even temporarily?
I'm sorry if this issue is already asked about in the forums, but it was pretty much impossible to do a proper search about this.
Also as I am one of those people who sold their Amigas somewhere in 1995 and bought them again somewhere 2005. I have forgot many things about Amiga software. So if there is any tutorial available for using HDtoolbox and formatting your second harddrive I would appreciate a link. Thanks! :)

You will need to remove the emergency_CD icon from sys:devs/dosdrivers and move it to sys:storage
I would think the OS 3.1 manual would have info on using HDToolbox...

Thank you HammerD, that helped to get rid of EMERGENCY_CD icon popping up, but still second harddrive icon will not show up on Workbench screen so I could format it.
HDToolBox finds it and I can Install and Partition but that is it. The device name of the drive is SDH0: with one partition and it is only 850MB in size.
I tried to go to Shell and "mount SHD0:" but it says "Can't open file 'Devs:MountList'"
Well I guess I really need to find my old WB 3.1 Harddisk Quide. I am all rusty in this.

Boot up with both harddrives connected, then run HDToolbox and click on the *first* HDD (the old one which was always there). It should pop up with a message stating that drives have been added or remove and the choice whether the changes should be saved. Save the changes and reboot. Now the second drive should show on Workbench.

Thank you Thomas! Got it formatted finally.
I should have done this in the first place, but I was afraid to touch the first drive just in case I accidentally destroy my installed system. I'm a little amazed how one simple thing can sometimes be unnoticed. :)
BTW. I know FastFileSystem is not the best option anymore, but right now studying how to use SFS or something is just too much for me, so what would you suggest to do with these options when formatting?
Directory Cache - Yes or No?
International Mode - Yes or No?
Put Trashcan - Yes or No?

I guess this thread answers these guestions:
http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=15384
So it is a no for Directory Cache and Put Trashcan
And yes for International Mode
Anyone please tell me if you disagree and why.
