Title: problem with USB mouse on A4000T
Post by: dougal on March 18, 2010, 03:42:19 PM
I bought a DB9 to USB mouse converter for the Amiga.

I tried it with my Logitech trackball (USB) from my pc and it worked great.

But now i bought a cheap logitech mouse and it refuses to work. The mouse is good as i tested it on my PC and it works fine, but on the Amiga all i get is the red laser like light at the bottom of the mouse flashing on and off but no function whatsoever from the mouse.

Any ideas?

What you call DB9 is probably a serial port (or COM port like PC people call it). The Amiga's mouse port is an Atari-like game port, not a serial port. Serial devices do not work on the Amiga's game ports, they can even get damaged or damage the computer. It's a miracle that the trackball could work on it.

To get an USB device work on the Amiga's game port, you need one which can also "talk" PS/2 and a (rather expensive) PS/2-to-Amiga converter like the Cocolino or Topolino3 or Micromys.

Wow - never saw that doodad before. Some incredible stuff coming out of Poland these days. But as to why it's not 100% compatible... not surprised. That USB to DB9 conversion is logic controlled, so unless you can update its firmware (which I highly doubt they designed it for that), you're going to be SOL buddy! That's a goofy piece of kit you have there. Kinda surprised it works at all. lol

I know there are utilities on Aminet that aid in using PC mice and such, but I'm sure they wouldn't work with your device. Might be worth searching though...

I found the old m$ mouse under a pile of spare pc/video/amiga cables. That is the respect i have for it.. LOL

Still no luck getting this adapter to work. So far tried 3 mice and only one worked.

I've heard Amiga mice work extremely well with Amiga computers and the upside is you don't need a $20 adapter either! lol

Okay, I'll stop now  :)

Did you try looking on Aminet for any drivers? Most are serial port drivers IIRC, but there might be something else of use. There's also a scrollwheel driver there too...

The problem most likely is that your USB mouse converter isn't really a USB mouse converter. It's a PS/2 mouse converter that has a USB port instead of a PS/2 port so you don't have to use one of those green PS/2 - USB converters. Problem is that not all USB mice work in PS/2 mode, and if they don't, they won't work with your converter.
