Title: Looking for a Slim IDE cd drive.
Post by: lauri.lotvonen on March 18, 2010, 09:00:13 AM
So as the title suggests, I'm looking for a slim cd-drive with a 40 Pin IDE connector. If someone here has installed one succesfully to a1200, please point out what drive you are using. And the reason for this post is that I could not find any Slim ones with IDE 40 pin connector, only ones with SATA etc...

There is not a slim IDE CD/DVD drive with ready 40pin connector for you to use...
All Slim IDE ones have the 50pin JAE connector that you need to change it with an adapter like these:

and so on...

Just buy a drive and an adapter and you're set.

Wrong.

Original XBox has a slim 40 pin IDE drive.

I guess you can get XBox's Slim then to put on the Amiga!
My mistake tbh... XBox's Slim is too common on Amiga mods :P

To be fair, that's not really a "slim" drive, more of a custom style full size drive.

Good luck fitting that in a 1200 (I imagine it may be possible, but an actual slim drive is much smaller.)

Also, actual laptop slim drives only need 5VDC, whereas the XBox one uses 5V and 12V like a standard desktop drive.

Yeah something like this...
It has the typical 50pin JAE and then u need the adapter I told ya :P

Btw... I'm really curious to see the Slim XBOX DVD drive...
The only ones I saw on eBay at least... was kinda un-slimish!

...

Edit: Also a friend of mine who's a Xbox sort-of-Guru... told me that XBOX dvd's are CUSTOM , with CUSTOM power connector that also carry serial data for eject/load/etc, and they rotate the disk in the opposite direction a normal dvd/cd drive does so there is really no comparison at all.

I think I have one in the loft.  It's certainly slim line and is external (in a housing).  I used to use it with my A1200 with the IDE cable trailing outside the case (think I used Allegro CD).  Sure I bought it originally from Amikit or somewhere.  Not sure I have the power supply adapter for it though.  If it's of interest to you drop me a note and I will take photo's etc.

Cheers

I bought:

this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180475157798)
and
this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300337874711)

I will probably put them in an A1200 or something - maybe use a buffered IDE interface for ease of 2 IDE devices and better performance, I have one laying around!

Are you looking to install it inside the A1200 by moding the case? If so, a slimline laptop CDROM with ATAPI JAE connector adapter as mentioned would be the thing to use. They are powered through the same connector.

I have an old Toshiba CDROM XM-1702B in black with the JAE connector.

I tested it about 5 months ago and put it in the closet. $10 + shipping if you are interested.

Thanks to everyone for being so helpful. I'm bit in between should I get a internal or external drive as the external should be more easy to install.

I have to get the buffered IDE interface from amigakit and a cable to connect the CF hard drive that I have and cable/adapter to get the cd-drive connected aswell.
Would this drive do the trick with the adapter suggested:
