Title: The Ads are back
Post by: Tension on March 14, 2010, 11:36:11 PM
So Dick Van Dyke has decided to put the Ads back on Amiga.org

He also asks for donations via the Kitty.

Times must be bad.  Those 'Diagnosis Murder' royalties must be running out.

Always liked his movies.

I thought he sold his Amiga stuff and moved on.  What's his current connection to Amiga?

He owns Amiga.org

He doesn't want anyone to know it's him though.

He was an avid ADPro user if I recall correctly. We loved it when he called for technical support.

Actually we had a lot of fun with technical support. At ASDG's heyday we had about 25 percent of our people in tech support.

We used to get calls to support other company's products. When we would ask why they were calling us instead of the maker of the product in question they would tell us because we had better technical support.

If it helps running the site I couldn't care less, the site is pretty much free (as in free expression) as it was so it's all good.

I don't know why I'd like that to be true.  I hope it is.  I guess we should respect his privacy.

I see no ads.  Are you confusing this board with Amigaworld.net?  They have ads for Windows 7 there...

Is that really true though, or is it just a rumour?  I though he had moved on from Amiga and was running or involved in a video effects company or something.

Great if he does actually own A.org though.  I have a lot of respect for the man.

If those are all the ads are, no pop unders or overs or fly-bys, just that box without flashing blinking audio/video filled junk, then who cares..

I block ads to keep the annoying junk away.

But just plain ads in a box in one spot on the scree to pay bills...  Go for it..

Not to put words in this mouth but I believe that he still has a fond place in his heart for the creative spirit that was behind the Amiga and the sense of community of it. If it really is he that owns Amiga.org then we are in good hands.

Mr. Van Dyke is a gentleman and a scholar and I'd be honored if he'd become an active part of this community. When he sold his A4000T on eBay I didn't quite make it to the top spot but I tried. The gent I corresponded with,  I believe he posted photos to Amiga.org of Mr. Van Dyke signing the A4000T.

"Q: Mr. Van Dyke can you talk about your interest in computer animation?

Dick: It started out as a hobby about 15 years ago when Amiga first came out with a little machine that would actually do animation and I’ve been doing it ever since. Now I have a room full of equipment and I’m struggling to keep up with technology, but it’s an addiction. It is so much fun. I’ve gotten pretty good. I’ve been actually offered a job as an animator and I realize the minute there’s a deadline, the fun’s over. So I can play as long as I want to with it and I have some good stuff in there, but I’ve never sold any or even showed any of it. "

I heard rumors that some of his animations were used on Diagnosis murder but I don't think he was paid.

Can't say it bothers me, whatever helps the site pay the bills, it's not like they are garish flashing ones with sound like on some sites is it.

Same here.  I only adblock annoying or distracting ads; text-only or discrete ads doesn't bother me at all.  I might even give it a click every now and then, just to show some support.
