Hiya,
I've got one of the later Escom A1200's still in the desktop case with the standard black lightweight PSU.
Now I know that the 1200's PSU is notoriously 'weak' but I'm currently running the following hardware additions without any problems:
Blizzard 030 + FPU
IndivisionAGA
IdeFixExpress
8GB CF HD
Wireless PCMCIA network adapter
Is the Blizzard 060 more power-hungry than the 030? Anyone know if I would I get away with an 060 upgrade or would I run into power supply problems with my kind of setup?

If that psu is as weak as the earlier A1200 psu's, then I'm surprised it isn't failing already :hammer:
Mine failed with a 68030 accelerator and a hard drive ! It suffered from sudden crashes with no apparent reason - I put an oscilloscope on the power rails and saw it dip as the Miggy crashed ! A tower conversion and an AT psu sorted it out, and it's been rock solid for 10 years.

I use sometimes a desktop a1200 blizzard 060 with the white psu and runs fine, using cf card like hard disk is better than a real hard disk for the psu (thats clear heh)

I ran the 1260 with the standard 25w psu for some time, but i quickly got an a1200 to atx power cable and taped together a franken psu. But that is a plain a1200, wih a 80 gig hd. I feel safer with 300w. though more noisy. I added two fans btw, one gpu fan glued near keyboard hole, and one larger blowing down in the middle of the amiga. I noticed it got quite hot without. Both fans are on 5v.. Though the gpu fan is 3v so its noisy as feck.

Might be overkill, but the desk plate of which the amiga sat on got hot, on the underside... Cool components are happy components

Depends what chip revision you run, the later ones run cool to the touch.

I dont know the revision number but its from dce, my blizzard 030-4 is a bit warm and no one use coolers.

I like the original power brick... Has anyone modded it to house a beefier power supply? I don't like noisy ATX PSUs with fans and wires everywhere.

Mine worked fine with an A500 power supply.

Mine also worked OK with an A500 (later "lightweight" version) PSU... ran it for quite a few years.
I went with a PicoPSU in my current A1200/060... more than enough juice (120W), silent, fits easily in the case and produces little heat.

Ran mine with a 4.5A A500 PSU without any issues

Used to run my A1200 with Bliz1230/4 with 3.5" hd and cdrom and 3 external drives with an A500 heavy brick power supply. Then I decided to buy an Infinitiv tower at a fair in Antwerp and those guys couldn't believe that I didn't need a tower power supply and so I only bought the empty tower :) I only switched over to a tower power supply a year later when I bought a Zorro4 busboard ...

my original miggy A1200 revision 1A :) the power supply for that was not good enough when I just added a pcmcia cd rom that was powered from the parallel port. had to get a bigfoot as was crashing all the time

I use a GVP 030 board with a flash HDD on an A500 PSU (~60w). I think the A1200 PSU is ~23w, which is too low, especially using a mechanical HDD (not used one in years but hey). I do have a converted ATX PSU but the fan noise is annoying, although I think i could slow down the fan to make it quieter - its not like the Amiga is pulling anywhere near 250w, I just can't be bothered! A500 bricks is the best solution for mid-range A1200's IMO.

I ran a desktop A1200 with Blizzard 1260, 16Mb RAM, Internal hard disk, SurfSquirrel, and MAS Player from the standard white brick with no power problems at all.
Prior to that I had the Blizzard 1230 Mk4, again with no problems...

I'm running a very power hungry 1200 with its stock brick PSU (A600/1200 unit) and the only problems I had with my setup was a VERY hot PSU, which soon changed once I added a fan to it. It now runs cool and the fan is silent because I used a 12V fan from the 5v supply line. It's near the back of the brick case pointing towards the heat sinks. I used an ATX PSU before that, but was very noisy and UGLY, so I decided to use the original supply instead.
It's powering apollo1260/66 32meg, FastATA with 2.5" hard drive, clockport prelude sound card, 12v high rpm fan in 1200 case, squirrelscsi interface, and floppy drive of course. I've had no issues with power whatsoever, and have been using this psu in this configuration for over 3 years now.
