Hi all,
Do you know a program that would allow me to assign something on the fly (without having to edit my user-startup) ? I know it exists but could not remember what it was. Very usefull for assigning duke3d dir.

assignwedge on aminet...

@lionstorm
but you wish to assign on the fly something permanently?
Ciao

I use AssignZ. It can make previously saved assigns only after they are actually requested, and if a program asks for an assign that doesn't exist, you can assign it somewhere direct from the requester (and optionally save that assign for next time), or even deny it so you'll never get another requester about it.

yeah assignZ is good but one prob :) , if the assing is wrong and u saved it, then u have to kill the whole assign file..
anyway i only use assignwedge on a few things and when i know its correct then i put it into User-startup...

Uhhh... you can edit your saved assigns with the GUI. Just use exchange to show it. If that doesn't work, the Assigns are in a plain text file that you can edit.

@ framiga : it is not permanent because I often use to install/desintall things.
@ others : thanks, will have a look at assignZ.

I got problems with AssignZ clashing with some system patch so it stopped to work. Now I use AssignWedge, sad it makes just temporary assigns.

I just put scripts with an IconX default tool into the same drawer. There's another tool called IconJ that executes tooltypes like shell commands. Put an icon with that into the directory, add:
assign duke3d: ""
to the tooltypes, and you're all set. It's beem a while, so I'm not certain if that's the case, but it should be okay.

I use MCP for many patches and fixes. But it rules in Assign stuff :)
You can create an Assign list, put the Assign's and you can select if it'll be always there, or it'll be only activated if it's needed (late).
MCP also will automatically popup a requester instead of the system requester asking me for the volume which is wanted. Like:
"Please insert volume Duke3D"
Then you can choose between Retry, Mount, Assign, Deny, Cancel etc...
When you click on Assign, then the ASL requester will pop up and ask for a dir. Select the needed dir and it'll make Assign automatically. And it always shows up in the PROGDIR: where you have started the program that wanted the assign. So you mostly have to click on "OK" only in the ASL requester :)
A very good and helpful tool this MCP ;)
