Title: Possible to use an Amiga hardware sampler with WinUAE?
Post by: mingle on February 12, 2010, 09:10:58 AM
Hi,

Does anyone know if it's possible to use an old Amiga hardware sampler (parallel-port) with WinUAE?

Cheers,

Mike.

What kind of sampler are you talking about?

Either the G-Soft Audio Imager or GVP DSS8/+

Cheers,

Mike.

I think WinUAE forums would be better suited for this kind of questions since the author is reading it...

I have a Megalosound sampler, and last time I tried, WinUAE didn't emulate enough of the parallel port for it to work properly... As a musician, I actually find it better to sample your audio using a modern PC and then if need be downsample to 8bit and edit using your favourite amiga app... :)

You don't need to use an old amiga sampler anymore. Simply use a program like AHIRecord [http://aminet.net/mus/play/AHIRecord-68k.lha] from within winuae.

I'm not a low-level hardware person, but I do know the Amiga and PC parallel port pinouts are different. I think the PC also lacks the +5V line used to power devices like the DSS8.

I understand your desire, though. The DSS8+ is pretty clean, but some of the older devices produce a distinct and cool aliasing effect. A lot of the samples used by Kon Kan and other similar bands from the 80's have that feel.
