Hi all, I'm trying out different imageviewers for my OS3.9 setup, but there are just too many options! What imageviewer do you all use and why?
I really need something that always retargets to CGX, and preferably something that decodes images on my PPC processor (in advance, too!). Ofcourse it has to support all filetypes, from JPEG to IFF24.
From what I remember, imageviewers that use datatypes are slow compared to imageviewers that have their own encoding engines. Still correct?
Please advice!

That depends. On OS3.9, I believe that the picture.datatype itself has some PPC acceleration for colourspace conversion and dithering. Coupled with PPC enabled datatypes for jpeg etc., I find that datatype viewers work fine for me.
However, a completely PPC native viewer that uses it's own decoding routines would still doubtless be a bit faster.

Not sure what "all filetypes, from JPEG to IFF24" means, but I guess you're stuck with whatever datatypes viewer you prefer, PicShow (http://thomas-rapp.homepage.t-online.de/amiga/picshow.html) is decent.

MiniShowPisture is really great. Simple, nice and fast works with datatypes.
Try it and You love it ;)

PicShow all the way for me.

I've loved to use CyberWindow for single images/animations and CyberShow for slideshows on my 68k/RTG Amiga setups. Don't know about it on PPC use...

I use a few. Mystic View is reasonably fast and does the job. More recenlty I've been playing around with LoView, which has got a nice interface but is not that fast. Infact none of the viewers I've used are fast showing very hi-res pictures (A4000D as per signature) so I always re-size images from my DSLR to 640x480 using jpgtn (find it on aminet).

I use Mysticview as well, and it's pretty good on an RTG system. Recently though it wouldn't load some PNGs I had. Not sure if this is because I don't have an up-to-date PNG datatype though. Does anyone know if Mysticview uses internal decoding or datatypes for PNG? Does anyone know of a good up-to-date free PNG datatype?

After weeks of fiddling I have decided Visage (with ppc datatypes) is still the best viewer available. Picshow came really close but Visage has a lot more flexibility; I couldnt get Picshow to swap to the next picture with the mouse / in a fast way, for example. Fastview was pretty good, too, and so were several others. I didn't like Mysticview and Viewtek at all, despite recommendations. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Unfortunately it requires CGX and does not seem to work with Picasso96 and Voodoo4 in Mediator...
