Title: Amiga 3000 PSU fan
Post by: jenfry on February 09, 2010, 06:53:13 PM
Hi everybody :)

First, I want to say I'm sorry for my "english" :(

I'm trying to "clean" my old A3000; it works well after many years into my garage, but it's very noisy.
I'd like to change the PSU fan, it's a 8x8x3 cm, 2 wires.
Could I buy one of those new generation fan, also if they have 3 wires?
Is it possible that they will be more quiet?

I have many many questions, but I'd like to cure the A3000 one issue at a time...

Thank you :)

Jen

I changed my fan a couple of years ago.

The new fans have three wires, yes but one is just for the RPM sensor

Be sure to choose a fan that moves alot of air.

I'd go for a Noctua fan which are silent and moves alot of air

I searched what you suggested and found the Noctua NF R8
not the cheapest fan I see... But it seems to be a good one.
Is it the one you intalled?
Is it really more quiet that the original one?
Thank you.

A Noctua, Nexus, or Papst, while still audible will be *much* quieter than the original. Generally, the noise from a Papst is mechanical (motor clicking), while an 80mm Nexus is more like the low "whoosh" of air moving. :P

Btw, I don't really know how the A3000 PSU looks like, but I found out on my A4000 that most of the noise isn't caused by the old fan, but by the air intake and outflow holes in the PSU housing. Changing the fan should be the starting point, of course, but completely cutting out the PSU front and back and putting modern fan protectors made of round wires did much more for my A4000 noise output.

I understand what you say...
I switched on the PSU while it was open and the fan isn't so noisy...
But I'd like to preserve the original casing
