Title: Quiet
Post by: motorollin on February 02, 2010, 06:33:49 PM
It seems a bit quiet round here these days. Where is everyone? Bloodline? Adz? Speel? Gadge? Karlos? Oh wait, Karlos is buried under a great big pile of PHP. ;)

I think EAB has been gaining in popularity lately.  I think there are more actual user's there and not just social chit-chatters who no longer even compute with Amiga's.

Well, it's the "chit-chatters" I was talking about really ;)

I'm not on EAB, just too busy with my life atm (working and being busy with my personal life)
Yes I do have time to post here, but I lack the inspiration. In the spare free time I'm just too tired to spare some fresh thoughts. :(

Karlos is busy shopping in Tesco for cheaper goods in this economic climate.

Though now you mention it, I do remember there being more regulars and genrally more active on here, maybe it's because of the new layout?  IMHO, I do prefer the old A.Org site for it's speed and ease of use, maybe thats why they have gone elsewhere?
Only reason I say this now is i'm less likely to get a red-hot poker from Wayne.

As I've said several times before, this site is being operated with a 1995 mindset and it is 2010.  What might have been important to copyright and patent holders 15 years ago, is not worth their bother today.  To have moderators patrol the threads looking for links that go to links that go to other links where there might be a file that can be downloaded that might be questionable is insane.  There are links to EBay all the time and there are illegal roms and copies of programs for sale there at all times.  It's funny they never get shut down.  But as the moderators like to say "We're not EBay" or "We're not Aminet".  Does that attitude maybe explain a little better the lack of activity.

It's worse than that, it's about 50% php and 50% PCRE.

Well, at least it's clean conceptually:

(http://extropia.co.uk/img/fossil/degraderproxy.png)

The PCRE is in the implementation of process() for the various XXXXRewriter classes above. Some of it is... well, nasty :)

I do*, they are just inside the various MarkupRewriter::process() implementations.

*except they're mostly preg_replace() / preg_replace_callback()

Also, I never tackle anything I can't draw a picture of first :lol:

I really have nothing constructive to say to that, apart from:

Hmm yes, I've found recently that physical diagramming has helped me to understand things when revising for exams and planning my dissertation. I've even resorted to using paper :nervous: :rtfm:

As an actual example, the following class converts the CSS popup menu you get against the post name into a HTML select list that contains the same options.

Code: [Select]
class PostMenuRewriter implements MarkupRewriter {
  public function process($markupText)
  {
    $this->postMenu = array();
    // replace the hidden <div> containing the post menu and get the options
    $markupText = preg_replace_callback(
      '@<!-- post ([0-9]+) popup menu -->.*?<!-- / post [0-9]+ popup menu -->@s',
      array(&$this, 'reworkPostMenu'),
      $markupText
    );
    // replace the inline <script> that binds the menu to the post and replace with options
    $markupText = preg_replace_callback(
      '@<script\s+type=&quot;text/javascript&quot;>\s+vbmenu_register\(&quot;postmenu_([0-9]+)&quot;,\s+true\);\s+</script>@',
      array(&$this, 'insertMenu'),
      $markupText
    );
    $this->postMenu = null;
    return $markupText;
  }

  private function reworkPostMenu($matches)
  {
    // called in pass 1: grab the post menu options and store them by post Id for pass 2
    $postId = $matches[1];
    $markupText=str_replace('rel=&quot;&quot;nofollow&quot;&quot;,'',$matches[0]);
    $matches=array();
    preg_match_all(
      '@<a href=&quot;&quot;(.*?)&quot;\s*>(.*?)</a>@&quot;,
      $markupText,
      $matches
    );
    $content = '<select onchange=&quot;if(this.value!=\'\'){window.location=this.value;}&quot;><option value=&quot;&quot; selected>-- choose action --</option>';
    foreach($matches[1] as $n => $url) {
      $content .= '<option value=&quot;' . $url . '&quot;>' . $matches[2][$n] . '</option>';
    }
    $content .= '</select>';
    $this->postMenu[$postId] = $content;
    return '';
  }

  private function insertMenu($matches)
  {
    // called in pass 2: replace the redundant postmenu_XXX inline script with our select list menu
    $postId = $matches[1];
    return $this->postMenu[$postId];
  }

  private $postMenu = array();
}

Sorry for being away, been rather busy setting up (and now currently going through) a course so as to get my SIA licence.

Passed both my Maths and English preliminary exams today, having a crack at a tougher version of the English one tomorrow for fun as the SIA practical stuff doesn't start till next week. Should be interesting.

I guess it'll mean that I'll be buying in the next curry, eh lads?

Ta! I only needed to pass one of the two I did today to get through to the next section, so everything beyond that is purely for the fun of it now (which is a far cry from this morning - was sweating like Gary Glitter at an airport waiting for the results for the first exam).

Sorry for the absenteeism guys.

I have been too busy recently to be able to post here regularly.

Apart from work, family life, a bit of volunteering for friends that keep me busy, I also have dozens of web project ideas that keep me busy. Once I have one completed one which I think is worth sharing I'll let you have a look.

Still alive and kicking.

Well I can relate to the business. I'm currently on my last clinical placement, 11 weeks away from submitting my dissertation (and not much done on it yet :nervous:), and also need to write a case study and carry out a research project. If I make it through the next 3 months without having some kind of breakdown it will be a miracle :-/

Heh, kinda puts my concerns about passing my tests into perspective...

Passed the advanced English comfortably, btw. Also squeaked through the advanced maths, which was a shocker.

To answer your question, the SIA licence is what you need in order to work as either static security or as a doorman.

I wish you luck on your placement and all the stuff that goes with it.

Perhaps you might wish to join myself, Karlos, Gadget and Nick for a curry once you're done?

Well, stress is relative to whatever else you've got going on. I find that with everything I've got to think about with my degree I can't cope with simple things like returning library books or putting fuel in my car - they're like the straw that breaks the camel's back. So you're perfectly justified in being stressed about your exams too :)

Next week should be a little more of a breeze - an IT course :D

Essentially what you'd find in the high end GCSE (one which would allow you to get an A-C grade). Being number dyslexic has always made it very difficult to deal with a lot of the more complex (from my point of view) things in maths. However, those few things I can deal with I'm fierce with. Apparently there was enough I could do to get through. If I'm honest though I would have to concede that exam pressed me to the limits. I know I wouldn't get an A or even an AS level in maths without some serious extra tuition as well as access to a calculator at all times.

Static security, I'm a bit too short to make for a convincing doorman, well that and my look of "menace with a smile" merely comes off as looking more like I'm constipated ;)

I can relate - I'm dyslexic and dyspraxic. Don't be afraid to take advantage of any extra support which is available (such as that extra tuition or access to a calculator). For me, having extra time and being allowed to use a laptop in exams has made the difference between 50% and 80% - something I never thought I was capable of prior to my diagnosis because I just thought I was too thick.

Well unfortunately the course I'm on offers neither the next level course nor any extra tuition facilities. So either way I've gone as far as I can with this lot. I'm grateful for the opportunity however to have gone as far as I have.

I know what you mean about feeling thick. I didn't get diagnosed until several years after I left school.

These past two weeks have been like waking up after a nightmare. That nightmare beginning with my divorce, the continuing hell that was working in call centres, ending with me on the streets. Since then I've made a few painful, but necessary (for my sanity) decisions that I can live with, but mostly I've been trying to put my life back in order. This is simply one of the final steps toward that goal.

So yes, it really does feel rather good at the moment. :D

Indeed they are.

I came back on here before christmas (I think) and tried to get here a lot more regular - last visit before that was probably 2006/7!!

Came back today because Siouxsie's watching the telly downstairs which means I can't play FFXIII on the X-Box :(

And having FFXIII means I'll have less time to post on here even though I've just got back.

And my health's just as crap as ever.

That's about all I do.  It's easier being on the 360 downstairs than it is being on the PC upstairs.

I think it's almost 10 years that I've been on the insurance now.  Nothing life threatening, but reliable is not a word that I can remotely use.  Sleeping is screwed most of the week.  I do what I can when I can, but not often.

I've managed two holidays in the past 10 years.  A week in a massive house near Chester for my dad's retirement.  Surprisingly I had a good week then.

The other was going to Silverstone for the British F1 GP last year with me mum.  Down on Friday, back on Monday.  We'd been planning on it since Damon Hill won the driver's title and only got round to it last year.  The coaches were brilliant, but I almost didn't make it to qualifying on the Saturday, and I was completely buggered from Monday night through to the weekend.

Still, it was worth it even though Button didn't win.

And Siouxsie's given me her bloody cold now aswell!

Enough rambling, I'm away to *try* and sleep.
