Title: amiga600 software questions
Post by: amiga4001 on January 28, 2010, 09:31:00 PM
I want to get my amiga600 online.
It has 2 MB chipmem no fastram.
Which way to go if any?
I got miamidx with key but this requires mui and maybe all of this is to ramhungry?
Maybe genesis?I got that also on the os3.9 cd but will this work on a 68000 with the 2Mb?
And which browser would be best Aweb Ibrowse Voyager?
It is only for getting software to it from aminet or from my pegasos2.
Dont care if it is not fast..

Envoy is the best solution for transfers to/from the Pegasos.
AmiTCP or Miami (regular - DX requires 020+) will both work, but there's not enough RAM for a browser. There should be some pretty lightweight FTP clients around, though.

Find the network boot disk which is around somewhere on the internet. It has everything needed on one floppy disk and should run well on 2MB. Start searching at eab.abime.net, I think it was published there.

Download AmiTCP from Aminet and install that. It's your best option for getting online with an A600. Don't bother with Genesis (bloated AmiTCP client) or Miami (still too big for your A600). Which PCMCIA ethernet card are you using? I have a few here that I use with the A1200s and A600s, and there are three different drivers to choose from which work with many different cards.

I think this is the network boot disk that Thomas is referring to - http://jpv.wmhost.com/NetworkBootDisk/

It contains all the drivers, a copy of AmiTCP, FTP client, and a text-based Wizard to help you get it all running and connected to your network. I don't think there is any internet software on there though, so you'll have to download that from Aminet. I'd recommend Grapevine for chatting on IRC, and AmiMUD for chatting and playing online in Multi-User Dungeons (who needs WoW when you have an imagination).

Unfortunately you won't be running a browser with only 2MB RAM. Older versions of IBrowse will run on the 68000, and work on some older or more basic websites, but you'll still need an internal FastRAM expansion to use it, or some PCMCIA SRAM and go online with your Serial port (which won't be much slower since the A600 can't really do anything fast online anyway). For example, browsing the web on my A1200 030 over Ethernet loads websites at about the same speed that it did over a dialup modem, simply because the CPU takes more time to render the pages than it does to load them into RAM.

But for transferring between the Pegasos and the A600, either a Serial Null-modem cable or PCMCIA ethernet cable and that downloadable boot disk should be all you need. There's also the Hombre disk which is useful for transferring from PCs to Amigas - http://wiki.abime.net/transfer:hombre

As mentioned before, AmiTCP is the way to go.
It seems everyone over here is forgetting two  browsers which will work, they are old, but will do the task: Alynx and Amosaic.
Amosaic is more resource hungry than Alynx, but it can be tweaked to work!

PS: If you are goin online with dialup, you can also consider Termite TCP as stack.

Hey Gulliver, could you write up a guide on how to get AMosaic to run on a 2MB 68000 A600? I don't think anyone forgot it, I guess some of us haven't managed to get it to run on this setup.

Good point, I guess. :)
You can still grab the Amosaic FAQ online. I havent used a setup like that for literally decades! :o

Thanks for your suggestions.
Think I will go for the bootdisk.
I have to forget about the browser then.
Which ftp adres can I use for downloading files from aminet?
Maybe I will only connect to the pegasos through the 3com ethernetcard..easiest?
Hope the card will work is a 3ccFE... well will see.
Believe there is a serial cable also somewhere.

That network bootdisk starts up with ftpd (server) running by default, so you can browse the internet with other computer and dump the files with ftp to the A600.

Or if you're using Amiga compatible system, like Pegasos is, you can mount all volumes from A600 with netmount command found from Amitcp packages. Then you can even unpack and install files to A600 from other computer.
