The demo's been around for quite some time...but Babylonian Twins is finally about to see the official light of day, for the Amiga and iPhone, as well.

Thanks for the link! I see worms is now on the iphone as well!!! That may be the first game I actually buy for a phone!

Babylonian Twins struck me as racist propaganda. Just me?
-
Yeah, just you I think.

Yeah, just you I think.
When you conisder the obstacles the develoeprs had to overcome making that game they are more "hardcore" than all of us.

Why?

Maybe he doesn't know that the deveolpers are Iraqi & he sees it as some kind of anti-Arab/Muslim thing? (you know, Hassan chop! etc)
In this bullsh*t "politically correct" age it is quite easy to be seen as being an asshole, even when you are not...
Personally, I don't give a f*ck...I've tried the demo, it's good....the guys that made it are friendly, also good....so whatever....
PZ.

No, I saw the game as antisemitic. Whether it is or not depends on the views of the developers and the game's place in Persian, Mesopotamian, and Babylonian history. Nothing to do with being "politically correct." The game's imagery echoes that of the "angry Jew" common in parts of the Middle East. Anyhow, probably overanalyzing. With respect to gameplay, the game looks like every other platformer.
-
I believe you are overanalyzing! :)

I am ancient assyrian and I find this game offensive... :P
-
As a Chaldean I find this whole discussion offensive, however I find the fact that their won't be mobile phone towers around here for 3,000 years much more offensive, and have you every tried to recharge an iPhone from a battery made out of a clay jar? Now that's offensive!
As I was saying to Sargon of Akkad yesterday, we really neat to nee-ten the palace up, you never know when those pesky Assyrians will turn up...
O drat, one just showed up above....
-
Well, at least the sarcasm is historically relevant. Video games are art, and I'm simply questioning the choices behind some of the game's imagery. No serious discussion here it seems. Go back to your button mashing, folks. Nothing to see or question here.
-
I dunno I looked for streoypical Jewish characatures in the demo game. I don't see any. Now if you think every bad guy in the game is Jewish, well how do you verify that...?
Now... reagarding sterotypes check out Metal Slug sereis. In the background you clearly see imagery of characters that can be offensive.
-
The evil sorcerer with pointy teeth looked a lot like some of the anti-semitic imagery I've seen. For all I know, the sorcerer might represent Saddam Hussein, a much disliked school teacher, or the Persian version of the bogeyman--"lulu-khorkhore," according to Wikipedia. If Wikipedia is correct, then the pointy teeth fit the bogeyman interpretation. Evil sorcerers often turn out to be that which children fear the most. That said, negative Jewish archetypes often serve as bogeyman in anti-semitic cultures or cultures under anti-semitic regimes.
If the game takes place around the time of Nebuchadnezzar II, then the sorcerer probably is Chaldean--but so was Nebuchadnezzar II, and presumably, the "Babylonian Twins" as well. The king's advisor might also have been the children's teacher, in which case we find support for the sorcerer representing an authoritarian figure from the authors' childhoods.

I think you should read the interview that the coder did some months ago. Reading both, I don't think he did such desgusting analogies, but I think your imagination is High :D

The image of Bad Guys from early film are rooted in Anti Semitism:
Black hair, Big exaggerated nose, twirling his moustache, horns, pointy teeth, tying a hapless victim to a rail road track, the image of the shylock, sheister taking advantage of someones misfortune.
So if we adhere to this image of a villan... then a huge amount of "bad guys" as portrayed in film are Jewish...
That would be most Everyone from Dick Dastardly to Gargamel.
I think it's a bit of a stretch. SO by that criteria I'm a jewish villan...!
becuase if a big nose, moustache, jet black hair ...that makes someone an evil stereotype, well...I fit that description.

I did. Not having grown up in late twentieth century Iraq myself, I don't presume to know their motivations, beyond their stated interests in computers and Persian art history. Hence, this discussion. ;-)
@Crom00
That's an excellent point, of course, but any modern artist would be mindful of that when choosing how to represent their villains. For example, mine all have Texan accents and beady little eyes. :-P

Black hair, Big exaggerated nose
Sounds like my muslim Iranian relatives....

Well that sounds like Yosemite sam? He could have been descended from safardic jews who opened up general stores in frontier america... or not!
-
Well, if we think about what wa have seen before, that evil magician looks more or less the same than other evilish magicians in videogame history, or even the witch from Cauldron... Or if we go to the comics sphere, that magician could be even a relative of Iznogoud...
I don't see any antisemitism there. I think everybody here would be angry or at least really critic if some kind of behaviour like that was shown.
So relax. ;) It's just an innocent game. Or maybe a suicide bomber in disguise.

Ohhhh George Bush? I get it!!!! Good one.

you know that description fits about %90 of the population in the middle east :lol: (including myself)
we're all evil jews ! :afro: yeah !

Yep, very suspicious that a game about the ancient middle east written in the modern middle east should have so many middle eastern looking people in it. Clearly a sign of racism or something. It's just not right. I mean what are middle eastern people doing in the middle east?

(p.s. I mean, um.. no, I'm not at work right now... uh...of course, I'm.. look, an unofficial union meeting!! )

I put a silly photo of myself hunched over the joystick playing Babylonian Twins on my A500 in the Gallery, but I won't post it here. I hope so much that they'll add the option for 2-button control pads so we can have a button for jump! I love platform games that have a bit of an adventure element to them, where you run around and talk to characters learning clues to help you through your quest. Babylonian Twins is going to be awesome, I can't wait!

racial stereotyping is wrong, but my perception is that Jewish people seem to be more sensitive to things that other races might just "let go". Ofcourse the holocauset has soemthing to do with it, but does that mean we should have a lower censorship threshold if things *could* be interpreted as anti-semitic?

Um.. :confused: er.. nevermind.. :)
Anyway, I think there's a Politics board here that is better suited to this part of the thread.
I'm just looking forward to more information on this great looking game!!!!

Hi,
I didn't see anything about an Amiga version in that article.
Chris

BTW, I was browsing amiga.org yesterday, on the bed with my iPod touch and saw this post.
Decided to buy Worms for U$ 4.99
Hmmmm... Not worth it.
* Some slowdowns (that's not quite a heavy game)
* Bad controls (maybe it's me, but I can play wolfenstein quite well)
...
Some cheaper and better games:
Pacman Champion Edition! :)
Falling Gems! (BTW, made by another former Amiga user)

@desiv
Why would you move a critical discussion of Amiga related art to a politics forum?
@all
All art, regardless of the medium, is half interpretation. Gifted artists are mindful of that.
-
@stefcep2
The problem isn't Jewish sensitivity to antisemitism; the problem is antisemitism. I wasn't discussing that, though. I was discussing my interpretation of some of the game's imagery.
-
@desiv
Why would you move a critical discussion of Amiga related art to a politics forum?
Because I don't read it as a "critical discussion of Amiga related art".
There were a "few" posts that mentioned Amiga related art, and specifically their socio-political overtones.
I can see that as a valid discussion point, but not in a games thread, when there are threads more appropriate for that. IMHO.
And I wasn't recommending "moving" the thread, but just taking the political (IMHO) portion of it to a political thread.
It's all too easy to get lost in politics on a thread.
But, I'm not a mod and people can, and usually do :) ignore me.
So, carry on..

p.s. Played the demo, great game so far. Can't wait for more.
