Title: Graphics Cards Accelerate Amiga Graphics ?
Post by: soulboy on January 14, 2010, 04:56:18 AM
Hi

I have read many forum posts implying that using a graphics card like a Picasso IV would improve the performance of the workbench graphics. Is this true ? I also assume that a scan doubler flicker fixer like the Indivsion does not do that. So from a performance point of view it would be better to pick up card like a Picasso than a stand alone ff/sd ?

Thanks

G

If you have an RTG enabled Amiga then use an RTG card for WB, otherwise use an Indivsion....simple ;)

Yes but which is faster ?

For WB use, RTG is the way to go....

RTG will always be much faster for OS-compliant programs.

The Indivision is a flicker fixer/scan doubler for the original Amiga graphic modes and will work with all those hardware banging programs.

Best of both worlds is a Picasso IV with the built in SD/FF.  It will automatically switch between AGA/ECS and RTG modes.

For plain WB usage a graphics card is always faster, but for most games that use the Amiga graphics chipset -> Indivision sd/ff.

EDIT: ain't we quick-repliers :)

Ok cool I got it. Thanks for the info. Yep very fast...

Just to be clear:
Indivision doesn't do anything to speed up the native Amiga output, it just converts it to be VGA monitor/LCD compatible. But it works this way with anything you throw at it - games, demos etc. It also allows you to use some high res graphic modes in WB like 1024x768, but still in AGA speed.

A graphics card accelerates the output by generating the image on its own chip, but in doing so it becomes incompatible with vast majority of games and demos and so is only effectively usable with WB and OS-friendly apps.

So, as others have stated, it's best to have a combination of both - some form of SD/FF (like Indivision) to play games and watch demos, and a graphics card to make WB faster.

Picasso IV and Cybervision 64/3D with SD/FF module take care of both at the same time - scandouble native output and accelerate WB.
