Title: Where did your amiga use start?
Post by: runequester on January 09, 2010, 01:33:53 AM
When did your interest in the amiga start? With what machine?

If it ever waned, when and how did it restart?

What machines did you go to afterwards/inbetween/in addition?

I had a C=64 for quite some time.  Then a friend of mine bought an Amiga 500 in about '89 or so, then I HAD to have one.  I bought one in the early '90's while working a part-time job.   I only gave up on the classic Amiga (usage) about 10 years ago after it just didnt do what I wanted.  Never got that passion again but I own a few machines, they just are not used.  I havent installed MorphOS on my Mini yet but eventually will.  Right now I use an emulator to play my games though.

EDIT:
just to clear the air.. I still love my Amiga(s), there isnt a system that I would choose over it when I feel like playing retro games.

TRS80 CoCo -> Apple //c -> Amiga 500 -> PCs -> OS X

I got into the Amiga because a good friend of mine purchased one and he suddenly opened my eyes to that world.  I had always wanted an Amiga since seeing the A1000 at the same computer store that the //c was purchased at.  It was all about what my friends and I were into in those days.  The decision to go PC was mainly based on my work.  I got my Mac mini on a whim to use as a media center (mostly for audio) and soon after got one of the first intel based MBPs.

Used and repaired all kinds of other machines in between but those are these are the ones I've owned.

VIC20->C64->C64C->Amiga 2000/8088BB->Amiga 4000/030+386BB->Intel 386->AMD K6--------AMD Athlon 64/X2/X4, etc.(Linux/Windows) BOOORING!!!!

My original interest in Amiga started with the announcement of the A1000. I read everything I could about it and planned for how I would convince my parents that I needed one for college. By the time senior year rolled around, Commodore had released the A2000. After all that planning my mom took little to convince.

I was allowed to order an A2000 with 8088 Bridgeboard for those lame MSDOS compliers I was going to have to run for my programming classes. I don't need to tell you all the thrill of your first Amiga. 3.5" floppies were a dream compared to the old 5 1/4" and a full GUI vs. load "*",8,1 with basic or peek and poke.

Once I got to school, I quickly decided I needed a hard drive - so I got the worst one possible on the PC side instead of SCSI - MFM if memory serves. Ran in on the briedgeboard and shared it with the Amiga. It worked but without finding Spinrite to fix the low level format on it all the time - It would have been useless. I graduated to SCSI a few years later.

I'm sure you all stopped reading a long time ago so I'l stop there. Other than I got one of the first Amiga 4000/030s at World of Amiga in NYC in 1993 and a 386 Bridgeboard. Carried them on my shoulder through the streets of NY back home.

I've never lost my interest in Amiga, although I use Windows machines on a daily basis. I still use my A1200, Amiga Forever and await the day that a new Amiga is released. I for one am interested in the X1000.

I was interested in Amigas but didn't actually go get one until I graduated high-school in 1993.  My first Amiga was an A1200.  I struggled to find documentation for the AGA chipset and AmigaOS 3.0 to program it.

My next machine was a crappy Pentium III-based PC in 2000 which I bought to try to use AmigaDE.  My dad still uses the Pentium III today.

The next system I bought was a MicroA1-c I bought in 2004 or so.  I bought it because I wanted to program AmigaOS 4.0.  I never did program it to do anything though.  It had core voltage problems and by the time I got them ironed out, I didn't have the desk-space to set it up.  It's been loaned out to another developer for a while now.

The next system I bought was a laptop with dual cores running Windows XP in 2006.  I installed Linux on it later that year and when I graduated college for the second time in 2007 it sat unused in my room for a long time.

For Christmas 2008, my parents bought me an intel Mac Mini.  It is my main computer now.

For me.. I'm only 30 .. but damn!
My dad got a Cromemcro.. then I got a dose of CP/M and  then Amiga 1000, then a 2000,  then a 3000, and then a 1200.. and now a 4000! I think I was around 12 or 13 when I got my Amiga 1000, which makes it around 1993 or 1994.

Well I bought a astrocade first starting college, then a vic then a 64. I was always interested in the newer technologies. In 1986 I purchased an amiga 1000. I purchased just about every model after, others I aquired later along with my Z-grass 32 for the astrocade. Amiga was always my favorite as long as it was viable. Now I just fiddle and repair the old equipment as they age. Its my favorite hobby. Now its strictly PC for work and daily activities.

Lets see, I started using Amiga at around age 12. I did a Commodore 64 and TRS-80 or two here and there before that, but never really got into computers on a regular basis until the A1000. Now I'm 33 and an Amiga head. Go figure.

Other than Amiga and Commodore, I havent tried anything except for a little bit of Linux OSes a few months ago, and they were free. Nothing but Amigas really peaks my interest for some reason.

I had a friend that tried Windows and he just wasted his life away, so I never really got into the hard stuff because of what happened to him.

I got my first taste of computers in 1982 with a timex-sinclair 1000 (that I had to piece together) and I paid $320 for the 16k (yes I said K) ram expansion. Shortly after that I got a Vic-20 and moved up to the C-64 a couple of months later. Went through a few C-64s (ran a BBS) and later got a SX-64 (that kept overheating) and then a C-64c. The first part of 1986 I got an Amiga 1000, then an A500, A2000, A2000HD, and then my favorite computer of all time, the A3000T. I left the Amiga scene in 2000 (and I still kick myself!). Did the Windows thing for a bit, then moved to a dual 2.0 G5 Mac. It died a horrible death so I ended up back on the PC, but using Linux. Been on some form of Linux since then. Looking to get back into it...

LOL  nice.

Saw what a friend was doing with computer art on a decked out A500. This was about a year after I dumped some $ into a C=64 system. Still have. Aquiered an A2000 with a 2286BB. Eventually tosterized the 2000 Sold it, then obtained a Warp'40 A3000. Been though a few different box models and various video hardware setups.

Then the wife at the time, who also had an Amiga, decided it was time to get a PC. This was about the time I discovered an online shooter called Tribes. Although I kept and used the A3000, I built an 1ghz Athlon PC. Used that and the A3000 while I obtained and built A4000VT/Flyer. The 1gzh Athlon started having issues, I decided to get with the times and now use on a daily basis an HP Athlon 64 X2, HP scanner and an 44" Epson 9600 InkJet printer. I ocassionally tinker with the A3000 and the A4000VT/Flyer.

Chronologically,

Apple ][+ and //e, TI-99/4 in school.
TI-99/4A at home, Atari 1200XL at school.
CoCo3 (briefly) then Commodore 64 at home, Mac at school.
VIC-20 at home (my C64 died, so this lasted until I bought a replacement.)
Commodore 128D at home, IBM System/34 and Mac at school.
Amiga 500 at home, DOS machines at school.
The Amiga 500 lasted many, many years, even once I got my built my first Windows 95 computer, then on to Windows 98.  In fact, my first real in-use Windows machine was in 2000.  At some point in there I got my A4000D as well.

I included the machines at school because I actively programmed or supported them.  In particular the System/34.  I helped admin the two machine "network" at my high school, learned OCL and menus, and what-not.  Fun stuff, actually.

During all of this, I started a "business" repairing 8-bit machines and peripherals, in particular Commodore and Atari stuff.  I picked up an 800XL and 1050 floppy about (dear, God!) 20 years ago, and I haven't used it but a few times.  I would like to build up my repertoir of Atari stuff.  Oh, and my grandfather had an Atari 520ST which I enjoyed, but no where as much as my Amiga.  I would like to get a hold of a "modern" ST system, though.

Colleagues call all of this "mental masturbation," but it helps keep me sharp, maintaining and learning from all of this stuff.  Much the same way that Solaris does not make me a lot of money right now, but the job prospects to support it (untill Ellison gets hold of it, I suppose) are great.

I had a friend who "convinced" me to buy a A500 in 1991 rather than purchase a PC.

It has waned off and on since that time.  I always checked in every few months, but there were many months, years of "not much happening in Amigaland" and I was pretty turned off by the so-called red-blue war, ANN, etc.

Let's see, my next machine was an A1200 in about '96.  I used my brother's A1200, his PC and my girlfriend's PC, and while at the university Unix, Sparc stations and PCs.  I used to Telnet X window sessions to my Amiga from the university account back in the day...fun stuff!  Man, NetScape was slooow!! I ran an array of emulators, Mac, Linux, etc. on my A1200.  I began teaching myself Amiga programming as a hobby back in about 1999.  Mainly just hacking scripts and the like prior to this.  So, come to think of it, I guess you could say I didn't actually "buy" my very own first PC (3Ghz Pentium) until 2005 (geez...that seems hard to believe)!  I've since added an Asus Core 2 Duo laptop and a Mac Mini for MorphOS of course!

Must have been around 1990 when I sold my Suzuki GS1000, but at the last minute the buyer couldn't get all the cash. He gave me his Amiga 1000 to top up the money ! I picked up an A1200 around 1994, and towered it (Still here), so I've never really left theAmiga scene.

First computer was a Sinclair ZX81. That was hard work !

My interest started when i was about 9 and a friend of mine had an A500. I remember playing Golden Axe and Chase Hq and seeing the Budbrain demo on it and I loved it.

I got my first one, an A500 Plus when i was around 11 or 12 years old.

Sold it when i was around 16 to buy a pentium peecee :(

A year later (and really missing my Amiga) a friend of mine gave me his broken A500.

Luckily i still had most of my Amiga games, joysticks and Action Replay MKIII, external floppy and A590 hard drive.

Changed the broken floppy drive and broken PSU, added some ram and fitted a kickstart switcher and kickstart 2.04 and i have never looked back :)

When I saw the first 1000 out of commodore corby. When the first 500 was available.  Whenever that was.

My first play with any computer was a Nascom-1 and a Commodore Pet 2001 in May 1978, (HB computers ltd, Kettering were trying to demo their wares to the school), fortunately my friends brother owned the company so I got to see quite a few toys over the next year, one of the first VIC20's too. By 79 I was coding on the school Pet... ;) I'm old now ;)

My own first computer took a few more years and I bought a Oric Atmos in 84 then a Commodore 64 (Got a broken vic20 case + a 64 board from the Commodore Corby, black market) in quick sucession, folllowed by a A500 in I think in 88 when I started work, by that time I was programming PCs and Dec Vax's.

In 1989 I upgraded my C64 to an A500 (1Mb) (I used it for games only),  I was then silly enough to but a CDTV, I ordered it from Currys at a cost or 500 quid and collected it on it’s release date (1991) – I dumped all my commodore stuff in 1992 to buy a Philips CD-i. – In the mid 90’s I moved to Dallas, I was over in the UK visiting in 2000 and went to Battersea car boot sale and there was a mint, boxed A600, complete with Workbench discs, mouse, joystick, user guides, PSU, scart connector, several games and several demo disc’s along with the original receipt  dated 1/5/93 from Dixons in Nottingham for 279.99. I asked the guy how much and he said that he had no clue what it was or if it worked as he had picked it up in a house clearance but if I could use it I could have it for a pound ……. ONE POUND ! – I was going back to the USA in a couple of days so I left it in the loft at my parents house and never plugged it in. To cut a long story short, I just moved back to the UK and my mother said that the loft was full of my crap (I had forgotten all about the A600) – I went up there and found it along with a NES, 2 SNES, 2 C64, 2 C2N, Philips CDI, SMS and all my kids toys ! – Couldn’t care less about the rest of the stuff but had to see if the A600 worked ……. And it does and I love it more than ever, as the demo “Technological Death” once said ……. AMIGA RULZ – ALLWAYS ! – OK, now you’ve all fallen asleep or gave up reading, I’ll stop !

My first computer was a Commodore C-116 which was replaced by a C-128 later on.

In 1986, I had a friend who got an AMIGA 1000, and I was hooked immediately. Then the A500 came out and I was lucky to get one in 1987. An A2000 followed in 1990 or so.

Then I started to study and the professors at my university convinced the students that they wouldn't get anywhere without a PC. Well, I still was young and quite naive at that time, so I believed them and bought one aswell. It was a 486 DX-2 66 which costed an insane amount of money and it was horrible.

In the following years I completely lost track about what was going on in Amigaland, the last machine that I noticed was the CDTV. The AGA machines, Commodore bankruptcy etc etc, all passed without my knowledge.

After spending a few years with PCs, the Amiga fever caught me again in the late 90ies (I think ~1998), so I bought an A1200 with PPC and all the blows and whistles. Now I have a nice collection of different machines including an A1000, A2000, a few 500s and 600s. I am putting some effort in Aros at the moment, the classics are used for gaming, DPaint and stuff like that. My work horse machines are all running Ubuntu though and I have one Windows XP machine for Cubase.

I unwrapped my 1st Commodore Vic 20 from under the x-mas tree in 1981. The following year I had a c64 under the tree. Next came the c128. Then around the start of the school year in 1985 my father bought an Amiga 1000 from One Byte Computers in Uncasville, CT. By x-mas 1986 he was back at One Byte and bought himself an Amiga 2000 and me MY OWN (not shared with him or my brother) Amiga 500. Now I had MY OWN Computer in my room I started calling local bbs. I worked the entire summer of 87 to save for a US Robotics 9600 HST modem (something like $800 bucks). Needless to say there were not many local boards with HST capability so next came the long distance calls. After a few months of these I figured it was time to put up my own BBS. The board ran on the 500 for about a year. At that point my father agreed to split the cost with me for my own 2000. I only had about 1/4 of the money but promised I would pay him back the rest. (never happened) At this point life was great. I had a high speed modem so the board quickly grew and I had an endless supply of games for the 500. In 1991 I mail ordered (and paid for myself) my final Amiga a 3000T. I used it happily until 97 when I finally gave in and bought a PC. Somewhere along the line I gave away the 500 and sold the 2000 for pennies but the 3000T sat in my parents attic until last x-mas. I was home and saw her sitting there and with the help of everyone here she back up and running better than ever.

I smoked, but didn't inhale.

PCs weren't really for games until the 486 came along. Amiga had awesome games. Don't forget the little war with Atari. Boy that victory was shortlived. I'm not a console person so an Amiga 500 was the only real choice.

:(

Boy I'm getting depressed thinking about this. Getting a 1200HD cheap 2nd hand picked up my spirits... It was my first internet computer.

I owned a 1000 back in '85.

Yeah, aver the years it waned, I've alway loved being on the cutting edge and Amiga left the cutting edge permanently in the early '90s.  I came back with the dream that Amiga would come back, that being dashed, I hang around out of nostalgia.

I went to PCs because of work, but all my main computers now, home and work are Macs.  OS X was attractive and once they switched to Intel I haven't looked back...

Bought my first A1000 used at an Amiga/PC computing store in Mundelein, IL late '86, after lusting over one since it was first released. Used that for a very short bit before realizing or deciding that upgrading its ram was not a logical thing to do when the A500's were so much cheaper out of the box. Sold my A1000 and put that dough towards an A500 with Kickstart 1.2 and a 1084s monitor. Used that to sample sounds for several audio projects back in the day and also used it to write papers in school and to play games of course. Wasn't until the early 90's that I got back into the 1000 because everyone was unloading them for peanuts and they'd come with all sorts of ram typically. Bought a 1300 Genlock and used it to add titles and such to peoples wedding vids, home movies or their kids' sporting events. A1000 will always have a special place in my heart. Would just like a fatter Agnus, 3.1 in ROM, internal HD and a faster CPU in an A1000 case and I'd be all "set" again :)

I heard about them so I picked up a 500 from freecycle.

Then I set up Winuae as a maxed out 68060 setup. The end. Might end up with morphos on powerbook or an x1000, time to wait and see.

I started with a Timex Sinclair 1000, and progressed to a Sinclair QL. In late 1986 I went to a store where you could select all the components and build your own PC clone. The turbo XT's were the hot ticket. I picked out all my components, and told the salesman what I had selected. He asked me if I had looked at the Amiga computer. I said no, and he took me and showed me the Amiga 1000. The full color GUI blew me away. And then he grabbed the desktop with the mouse and drug it out of they way to reveal a picture of a naked woman. I said "Screw that XT clone. I WANT ONE OF THOSE AMIGA'S!"  ;-)

I've never had an Amiga as my primary computer, but my grandfather had an Amiga 1000 for quite a while. Some time after I left college I got intrested in "fringe" operating systems and started playing with AROS and Syllable. Sometime in this period I picked up an A4000D and a Prometheus PCI adapter to play with. Can't say I did anything terribly intersting with it.

At some point it became clear that while the Amiga and its operating system were special in its day, it doesn't make much sense to use an OS derived from it. Design decisions that made sense in 1985 don't necessarily make that much sense for today's hardware. So I stopped playing with AROS and stopped paying attention to the Amiga scene for the most part.

Hyperion's tease with the A-Eon site got me interested again, but now that the specs have been mostly revealed I doubt I'll be picking one up unless it's a lot cheaper than I expect.

My Amiga use story is a bit lenghty, but here it goes.
Started with a C= Vic-20, writing stupid proggies in Basic and saving them to tape. (A 1541 floppy drive is fast only in comparison to the tape...)
Then went up to a C=64, with 2 1541 drives, a tape drive I didn't touch if I had any other option, and a 1701 monitor. Lots of games, and subsequently lots of broken joysticks. :-D
Then I played with an Amiga 1000, managed to get her to boot into AOS2.1 with some romkicker, and a 20MB SCSI hard-disk. (Slapped into some wierd looking contraption on the side expansion slot, would have worked on an A500 in theory, but would need to be flipped upside-down)
Then the A500, which never made it past a floppy based WB 1.3 system. Used it for games and such I couldn't play on the 1000.
Finally, bought an A1200 from a friend of my brothers, who threw in an extra 500 and monitor as well. I sold the 500 and extra monitor, eventually upgrading the 1200 to what it is now (http://personalpages.tds.net/~kvasir/1200brag/index.html).
By the time I joined the navy in '99, it had a 68060 + 16mb RAM, a dataflyer SCSI card + cd-rom and a syquest drive, and an optical boing mouse.
In the navy, I was stuck with whatever I could fit on the ship, which was originally a used 486 monochrome laptop with windows3.1 on it. Eventually the 486 was float tested after an unfortunate crash, and is probably the only hope the little mermaid has of playing doom. (The only decent thing on it, though monochrome didn't do very well...)
Then I got a pentium III with WinME on it when I had an apartment. Not sure what happened to that pos, though. Eventually, I got a compaq presario 2100 with win XP on it, which I used until I got out of the Navy, and resumed Amiga1200 use. (Still have the laptop, thinking of gutting it for parts)

Just wondering, how do you browse the web? (modern browser under win95?) and have you ever though of getting a PPC card?

Our family got an Apple IIe but the first computer I owned was a C64.  Then I started working on Computers at age 13 and worked off a 386DX 33 MHz :).

The same shop sold Amigas, and since I liked games so much, it was only a matter of time before I bought an A500.  The rest was history and I never left the scene  (in spirit) since!

The only Amigas I never owned was the A4000D and any A3000 variant (worked on them and wanted one sooooo bad!).
