Title: A500 upgrade
Post by: on December 11, 2002, 03:00:47 AM
Has anyone out there ever upgrade an A500 to the max. I mean 2 meg Agnus stuff like that. Im interested in how this is done. Any webpages or personal stories would be cool. Any pages with parts or so on is also cool.

In my A500, I do not have a 2 Meg Agnus, but I do have 8.5 Meg worth of RAM in it which is 512K less than the max in its current configuration.  It also has a hard drive attached to the left side of it.  If you have any questions, drop me a line at my Email (button at the bottom of this message).  You can check out my A500 here -> About My Computers - At the bottom of the page. Not much to my site.  Mostly just a bunch of links that I haven't updated in a long time!  :-)  Well, that's cool, too anyway!  Let me know if you have any questions about the system.

The best 500 I've personally seen was owned by a friend of mine...  It was approx -
A500 w/ VXL 68030@28mhz + 8MB FAST on card.
DKB MegaChip 2MB Agnus
ECS Denise
DataFlyer/DataRam 105MB HD/4MB RAM
1.5 MB Baseboard Supra (for the MegaChip?)
This system was back in 1992, or so, so it was pretty cutting edge for the time.
(...until I bought my A1200 with the GVP '030@40mhz and 0wn3d him.  hehe!)

I have a unique add-on in my closet that would be a prime find for any Amiga 500 expansion fan.  The Bodega Bay Zorro II expansion box.  It'll turn an A500 into an awkward looking A2000.  It's large, heavy, and guaranteed to not fit on any conventional desk you've ever seen!  Picked it up at an old C= auction for $10(!!)  Guess no one wanted to lug it back home with them...  I wonder why....   :-P

Hmmm A500 Upgrade.

There have been a number of 68030 accelerators, but i`m sure I remember seeing a GVP 68040 one years and years ago.
2M Chip Ram
? Fast Ram (I`m not sure if accelerators can take it past 8.
3.1 ROMS
IDE\SCSI
HDD, CDROM, etc.
Zorro 2 slots (Bodega Bay?) - Hence all manner of Zorro 2 Cards

There is actually 2 nice 030 cards for the A500 on the US ebay site right now going cheap. One is a GVP A530 and the other is one that goes on the 68000 cpu socket. I had the later one and loved it for my A500 back in 93 or 94. If your interested in a lkook just search for Amiga accelerator and they will come up. (they are not mine by the way! ;) )

Thats quite a floppy setup. is it homemade or bought. Are those just pc floppies reworked. Do you know of any place with instructions on how to do this or a place to buy those controllor cards?

They are homemade and yes it's PC drives. I guess I made some circuitry diagrams and a PCB layout but I'm not shure where they are. I can look but it might take a week or two to come out with an answer.

I have two 500's, both w/ 2Meg MegaChip and A530 (40Mhz 68030 & 40Mhz 68882), 8Meg Fast. Various drives attached (EZ135, 2x 1Gig, 2.2x CDROM). Works great, when the kids don't get on it, crash it, and invalidate the boot partition! :-x

There has been some towers for A500 that give you the opportunity
to really max out, as I've done:
A500T in Micronik tower, with 3 ZorroII slots and A2000 CPU slot.
Mobo enhanced to ECS + HD floppy; Blizzard 2060 clocked to 57 MHz,
96 MB fast, CV3D and PicassoII+ or PicassoIV, SCSI CD-Rom, FastSCSI
4 Gig HD, monitor switcher, external flickerfixer, 1.3/3.1 ROM switcher
and for 1.3 use Oktagon2008 + HD + 4MB.

Bloody hell! Thats the A500 I always wanted. Alas my A500Plus never got beyond 2mb RAM, A590 20mb HDD and a MediaVision Reno CD drive/discman.

My mum still uses it for MegaBall and Bally :-)

Another queston. Does anybody have a list or setup that is the ultimate? Tower or no. What I mean is, are there certian definitive upgrades that are considered the best? What is a maxed out A500? I build PC's so my brain kinda works on this "what is the best mode."

Does your A500 detect disks in all those drives? I have read that sometimes with PC to Amiga floppy mods that while the drives work the Amiga does not automatically display what is in the drive like it does on a genuine Amiga drive.

Actually I don't really know but what I remember I have never noticed such behavior, but I can't be completely sure. Since I've been moving around lately, I have all my belongings in boxes. So I can't test it for you. But I can tell you that I could run them all att the same time. For an example: DF0: Formating, DF1: copy to DF2:, DF3: Virus scan. Plus a lot of other programs running (Powerpacker, scenery, ADpro etc.) just to demo the multitasking ability to friends.

I've got a GVP '030 40mhz laying around somewhere...
Never tried it really, it was actually given to
me by a friend that didn't want it anymore. He
was probably going to toss it otherwise.

Cool. This seems to be a popular upgrade expansion. Yet I can never figure out from the info. online what it includes. I think it is just an external processer, but I am not sure. Do you know know what it has?

Nice....  I had forgotten...  A friend of mine had a GVP '030 expansion for his 500...  It really was the Ferrari of A500 expansions back in the day.  You could add FastRAM (GVP SIMMS), a hard drive, and even the GVP 286 emulator, I believe.  And it all fit in a very nice case made out of exactly the same type of plastic as the stock A500, so it looked very natural sitting there hooked to the side expansion.
