Hello Amiga fans of the world.
I was playing Buggy Boy tonight when suddenly I could not accelerate anymore right in the middle of the game. I thought the game had a bug, but by trial and error I found out that "up" on the D-pad did not work anymore. Every other button on the CD32 joypad works, but not "up" on the D-pad anymore. Left, right and down works 100% on the D-pad
It was fully working before I was halfway in the race in Buggy Boy this night, how can the joypad break during gameplay? First time it has happen to me ever. And the CD32 pad is in mint condition as I bought it 100% new from old stock.
Man I need some help, what should I do now in order to fix it?

That simptom is very likely a broken membrane. I never had a cd32 keypad, but you should be able to open it up and see the inside. Check the membrane. Maybe it's only dirt or dust that got inside and is causing the trouble. If the membrane is ok, then the ic on the pad is gone. Time to get a new one or another type of pad, such as sega megadrive six buttons, it's a great pad.

Sometimes I get problems with my control pad buttons or D-pad not working properly, which can sometimes be fixed by bending the cord around a bit. I guess the wires become stretched or broken inside, maybe from being yanked while still being plugged in.

The build-quality of the CD32 controllers is quite poor. I have an NOS controller where the right shoulder button barely works. The reason? Globs of solder on the PCB contact are preventing the rubber pad inside from making contact to trigger the button. Pop open your controller to see what's going on, and remember that the last screw is under the serial number sticker - took me a while to figure that one out when I opened mine

Try using isopropyl alcohol on the membrane and board contacts and dry it off. You will be surprised what that stuff can do for electrical contacts.

Ok, I will open it up and check the membrane. Its quite weird it stopped working right in the middle when I was playing.
Great joypad though! I will miss it if it wont work again.

The up button of my cd32 controller stopped worting in this way. The ABS plastic frame that sits inbtweeen the buttons and membrane may have cracked. It's cheap ABS plastic. They only fix is to get another controller or GLUE the brown abs plastic and reinforce it somehow.
The competition Pro CD32 is much better build quality and shares the Sega Genesis look and feel.

My CD32 controller simply had all the little "needles" whom secures the D-pad in place broken off.

Mine works really bad. In fact the D-Pad rotates itself placing the pressure points on wrong positions. And of course if you have your d-pad rotated 45º to the right or 45º to the left, is not aligned with the pcb marked points, so you press and you get no response.
Original CD32 pads are astonishing poorly built... A real piece of crap.
I have two competition pro pads that work a zillion times better.
Plus i have some PSX-CD32 adapters that work GREAT but i always forget how to configure them, so i don't use them very much (LOL).

Alternatively, send it to me and i`ll do it.

I have serviced controllers in the past with success let me know if you need a helping hand, Il be happy to do it free of charge. :) (though Tension offered first so speak to him before me to be fair).
Best of luck anyway.
Oh just an observation, did the CD32 have 2 Different D-Pad styles? (the black plastic bit I mean).

I fixed it.
Dont ask me how, but I opened it up, rubbed a bit on the contact pieces, then I mounted it, launched Naughty Ones on my A1200 and "Up" worked fine!
There was nothing wrong visually inside it. I suspect maybe the cables running inside the 9-pin cable is a bit broken.

Congrats! Enjoy a working pad for the next few weeks. Hehe! :insane:

Hi,
cut some matches and use glue.
