Title: DOpus4 Latest version
Post by: Matt_H on November 11, 2003, 10:03:59 PM
Anyone know what the last version of DOpus4 was? I'm running 4.16, but it's got overflow problems with large partitions and disks. I found an archive of 4.17pre21 on my drive. How's that for stability? And does it solve the overflow trouble?

Thanks

I`d go all the way and upgrade to 5.82. Believe me you won`t be dissapointed. It does require a bit more RAM though, but its well worth it. I used to use v4, which now looks very limited in comparison. Also requires cash :-)

The latest/greatest version is 4.17pre21..

Unfortunately, the website is now at Yahoo Groups (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/opus4/) so you need to join the group and be approved before you can download it.

Nick are you talking about Directory Opus 5 Magellan II 5.82 ? Development seems to have stopped in 1999 from what I can see on its website :-( http://www.gpsoft.com.au/magellan/magellan.html (http://www.gpsoft.com.au/magellan/magellan.html)

I havent got my Amiga up n running yet, due to work schedules (both 1200s sitting in a box by my bed still, but I got 2 new harddrives today for free).
From what I see DOpus5 is a workbench replacement, so isnt this made obsolete by OS3.9? In otherwords is it better to have DOpus5 sitting over workbench, than sticking with OS3.9?

Is DirOpus 4 just a file explorer, two file windows and a bank of buttons? so just used for quick file transfers? or is it looking like Dir Opus 6 for windows? preview of Directory Opus 6 for windows (http://www.gpsoft.com.au/preview.html)
that looks sweet especially the shared mode for background pictures.

a nice review for it sings its praise  Amiga Format review back in march 1999 (http://www.gpsoft.com.au/Reviews/opus_magellan_2.html)  but that was 4 years ago, so OS3.9 must have addressed the issues raised by DOpus?

..... help

I must confess that I haven't used DOpus since I got a version on a coverdisk back in 93 or something,  but if nothing too drastic has changed, I doubt very much that DOpus is "made obsolete by OS3.9"

Since OS3.9 is a WIMP environment, and DOpus is not
Or has everything changed out of all recognition since then?

mate check out this link http://www.gpsoft.com.au/Reviews/opus_magellan_2.html (http://www.gpsoft.com.au/Reviews/opus_magellan_2.html) looks like a complete workbench replacement

All Opus 5.x and up were workbench replacements, or you could run them just as a filemanager if you want to keep Workbench.

Opus4 is just an explorer, two file windows and a bank of buttons at the bottom.

Magellan II 5.82 was the last version for Amiga, they've left the platform and are concentrating on Windows :-(

i suppose its like if only a small percentage of windows users buy it, then its still more than if a large percentage of amiga users buys it.
shame really... looks damn hot on both platforms... latest windows versions has some fancy looking features.

damn that pesky bill gates... doh im writing this on a windows PC.... eeek

I got the demo version for Windows an couldn't use it at all.  It's just didn't feel or look right at all.
