Title: Change 680x0 on PPC card???

Is it possible to change the 680x0 processor on the Blizzard PPC 603e card?

I own one and can tell one thing:
CPUs don't have sockets - they are sticked hardly to the board.

So the first problem about changing CPU is unsticking the old one, every pin, and then connecting the new one.

Unless he is talking about CyberstormPPC cards which have socketed 680x0 chips.

BlizzardPPC cards...possible, but very hard as pins are soldered onto the PCB and a steady hand is required for some percise desoldering, and then soldering again for the new chip.

My blizard ppc (603e/210 + 060/50 + scsi) have the 68k in a LIF slot.
I think that the only problem to change it to a better 060 its change the oscilator or the multipliers. (But its very easy)

I hoppe that you have a blizzard with a socket.

No please..don't try to overclock you 68k cpu....I've heard a lot of time that is really dangerous to overclock 68k cpu when the work with another cpu (PPC cards).
The overclock can make errors of communications between RAM and CPU PPC-68k....

Hello and thanks for your replies.

I don't own a PPC card yet and the PPC card I was talking about was the one for the amiga 1200 and not the Cyberstorm.

I'm not interested in overcklocking, I just wanted to know if it was possible to change the 040/25 to a 060/50 on a Blizzard PPC 603e card.

Is there different sorts? I mean if I read your answers I understand that there is some with soldered 68k chips and some that are in sockets?

All of the Blizzard cards I have seen all had
the CPU(s) mounted directly to the board.

Anything is possible;-), you would of course
have to remove the old 68k chip (and install
a socket), change the voltage to 3.3v and
possibly modify the clock freq.

The hardest part may actually be sourcing a
socket for the 68k...they seem to be hard to
come by for some reason, especially if you're
not buying 'bulk'.

I know that Blizzard PPC and CyberstormPPC are sold also in a version without 68k CPU,only with PPC processor;perhaps in those version the 68k CPU needs only to be put in a socket like the  PC-Win motherboar(without solder it) and so you can use the 68k you want and change it...

It's really not a good idea, they are very difficult to get hold of nowadays so if you damage the card you could be stuck without anything.

P.S. Does anyone know where i could get hold of one?

I currenlty have a Blizzard PPC 160/060@50mhz, but maybe buying a Blizzard PPC 240/040@25mhz off some chap. I WILL CHANGE THE CPUs :crazy: via Amiga Repair Centre, they do it. I asked them and they said they could do the job.

i think that you are the only one to have a Blizzard with a socked 68K (LIF . . .  the only one in the world).

All the Blizzard (PPC and not) has the 68K soldered on the PCB.
