Hi. I am not giving up.. ;)
Instead Im taking it one step at a time. Lets start with the emergency disk that isnt working. It loads up, then just before the white workbench bar is displayed it throws an 'invalid resident library' error. then the blue star-pattern is shown, and nothing happens.
Now, I know Im not the only one who's had this problem, so can someone with a similar setup (3.1 a1200 + 060) be so kind to tell me how they fixed it? Perhaps you can even exchange some files with me. (I will return them when Im done, promised)
I have tried the usual stuff myself, ofcourse. Made sure the disk has the latest 040+060 libraries on them. Tried various workbench.libraries (there are 4 on the OS3.9 cd), tried copying the Emergency-disk folder from cdrom to harddrive, so I can use some echo's to find out where it goes wrong (the LoadWB command).
Any other ideas?

Edit s/startup-sequence and remove the endcli command at the end.
Then boot again and after the error message appears a prompt should be shown. At the prompt enter
version workbench.library full
What does it say ?

Have you tried a different hard drive?
Have you tried not using IDE-Fix? I have plenty of problems with IDE-Fix on anything higher than 3.1, on my A4000T. I have to use the SKIPROMUPDATES scsi.device and all that trash.
Do you really need 120 GB?

Hey Thomas, thanks again for replying. It says version 45.102

yeah Im afraid I do.. Ive tried all that skipromupdates nonsense aswell, didnt make any difference.
could try without the idefix, but I need it anyway and Ive had a hard time getting it fixed on the board. the harddrive is not faulty and quite modern.

And if you enter loadwb after that, it says again "invalid resident library" ?
Does it access the CD drive and load files ?
If you enter
cd sys:
and
cd
what does the second cd reply ?
Please try this: edit the CD dosdriver (devs/dosdrivers/emergency_cd) on the floppy disk and check the MaxTransfer value. It's probably 0x1000000. Change it to 0x10000 and try again.
If it does not work, please compare the emergency_cd file with your CD0 file on the HDD and tell me the differences.
Edit: please also enter version c:loadwb.

the cdrom is properly mounted and the assigns are made correctly: to AmigaOS3.9:Emergency-Boot. Files are loaded aswell. When I type loadwb it says 'invalid resident library, when I resize the cli window the machine freezes and resets. when I type EndCLI it says 'process ending' before spinning up the cdrom drive and crashing. cd0 drivers are identical. I did install the bvision, but before the emergency disk was created. could it be something related to this? (doubt it) loadwb is version 44.2 (its the one from cdrom, mind. the version on df0: is.. 38.9. perhaps one of my try-outs from last night. when I try to start either it says 'invalid resident library'). changing maxtransfer didnt help either.

Does the emergency disk contain cybergraphics files ? I.e. something in devs/monitors and some files beginning with cgx in libs ? Remove the file from devs/monitors and try again.
Regarding the 060, I assume you've got a BlizzardPPC, otherwise you wouldn't be able to run a BVision. Does your Blizzard have a recent flash ROM version ? You can get the latest here: http://powerup.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=13
And regarding the libs, there should be a 68040.library with a size of only 748 bytes and a 68060.library of slightly more than 100K.
-
Nope, I couldnt find any CGX files. And cgxsystem.library didnt fit on the disk. I actually had no 040/060 libs on the disk since I made a new one yesterday. I took the latest from the site you gave but still no luck.
To be honest, Im a bit afraid of flashing the ppc board. But its got a very recent flashupdate, since the 31khz hack is installed. ppc.library is v 46.31. Any idea what BPPCfix does? Do I need it? Probably not:
Oh and dont forget I had the same problems with the blizzard 1230. So I doubt its ppc/cgx related.
-
Ah, I think Ive got it.. trilobyte was right. Hang on..
OK, so Ive removed c:idefix from startup-sequence. it still gives the 'invalid resident library', but now after the workbench bar appears a CacheCDFS requester is displayed. You know, the No, Never, Yes, Perhaps one. After clicking Yes, another lockup and no more activity.
could it then be the cd filesystem?
-
or perhaps I need the 2nd version of OS3.9? Found that in a thread on EAB. I guess Im now entitled to download this using some p2p program.. Ive been trying to install os3.9 the proper way for a full week now! Amazing, isnt it? ;)
-
How annoying! I got it to boot once but I dont know what I changed. I know it has something to do with setpatch, because I left that out of the startup-sequence. It didnt give me the resident library warning. it even showed my harddrive partitions as nice os3.9 icons. then it started loading some picture, I assume for the background. I could just make out a title in it, it started with FAIL (how approperiate) and then it crashed and rebooted.. After that I tried to get it back the same way but it never did.

Could you tell me which version of the IDEfix software you use exactly ? Is it this one: http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/IDEfix97 or this one: http://icomp.de/t/bin/eb_final.lha or a completely different one ? Could you try the eb_final version ?
I know it has something to do with setpatch, because I left that out of the startup-sequence.
I won't even find the CD drive without SetPatch, not to mention that it completely refuses to boot any further. You probably booted once with SetPatch active, then removed it from the disk and did a warm-reboot (Ctrl-A-A). This means that the ROM update was still active.
Whenever you change something which affects the memory-resident modules, you need to switch off the Amiga in order to test the change properly.

Hi Thomas, hmmm thats probably what I did, yes. Will try to reproduce that tomorrow. Im using the idefix software that came with the device. I tried the latest 'unreleased' one, as someone suggested on amigaworld, which didnt help. will check tomorrow what version it is and try out your suggestions. in the meantime Im trying to get my hands on that 'SE' version of os3.9, it might help.

I did. the version I was using was:
IDEfix 2.5
the version in the archive is
IDE-max 119.17
it did show the nag-requester,but after that the great blue/grey background and no more activity..
mind, the only thing I could install was idefix, all the other folders contained files I didnt need like atapi.device and buddha/catweasel rom files.
I have 2 questions for you:
1) when booting from the emergencydisk, there is a few blocks of data read, then the accessing stops for 5 seconds. is this normal?
2) also, why does cd0:emergency-boot/s/startup-sequence contain a lot of similar commands as in df0:s/startup-sequence? I mean things like setpatch, loadwb etc are in both files. is this normal?
You probably booted once with SetPatch active, then removed it from the disk and did a warm-reboot (Ctrl-A-A).
Oh, and you were right regarding a warm boot with the rom update loaded and no setpatch in df0:s/startup-sequence. that worked, os3.9 is loaded, icons are shown. but it complains about workbench.library not being version 45, then shows a big screen with the text NOTFALL-Start (right, emergency-boot in german) above, then some garbage, and then it reboots.
update: when I boot to my 'bad' OS3.9 install, then reboot from emergencydisk, and dont run setpatch or iprefs in either startup-sequence, os3.9 is now booted in a stable manner. but it cant load, for example, amidock, because it requires workbench.library version 45. Iprefs is the cause of the crashes, it seems!
so, some more questions that spring to mind:
3) could it be that I have a4000 roms in my a1200? they dont have workbench.library, right? they are v40.68
4) wasnt there something with iPrefs on ppc boards..?
-
I can hardly believe it myself, but OS3.9 is running, totally stable! When I looked for FastIprefs in my old Amiga files backup, I also found a cut-down version of OS3.5, completely configured for my previous PPC board. I copied it over and installed it on my spare partition. Booted from it, then made a new Emergency Boot Disk from the OS3.9 cdrom. Installed cdrom driver from idefix on it, removed some blizkick stuff and voila, it worked, booted into OS3.9 and I was able to install OS3.9 to the harddisk.
So, apparently it is important to install OS3.9 from a 3.1 install at least, a 3.0 install just wont work. I could have known, since the specs state this, but I never expected it was this important.
I have one last question for you, Thomas. How do I install this 'newer' version of IDE-Fix that you linked for me? Like I said, atapi.device has no use for me and just replacing IDE-Fix gives me that nag-screen on boot-up.
Thanks for your help. Will open a new thread for all the other problems I will face..

I don't think you need to. The eb_final archive contains IDE-max 119.17, too, so it seems to be the same version.

thanks. no idea why scsi.device reports v119, while idefix reports v2.5, though.
