Title: Updates for WB 3.1?
Post by: AmigaPixel on November 25, 2009, 12:40:37 PM
Hi All,

I got two questions;

I was wondering what are some basic recommended updates to OS 3.1? I am planning upgrading my A2000 from OS 2.1 to 3.1 instead of OS 3.9 since it does not a graphics card yet.

Before I do that however, I will be mounting a IDE cd-rom in OS 2.1. I am going to have to get re-familiar with Workbench. Anyway the other question I have is this, if my SCSI/IDE controller has it's own software for setting up an IDE bus, is IDE-fix97 needed? I know I will need to use something like AmiCDFS to mount the cd-rom part.

If I run into problems along the way, I know I can count on you guys to help me through. Tinkering never gets old!

get classic workbench.  saves you a lot of time and effort, and I believe it support cd.

Download KingCON, VisualPrefs, NewIcons patch (along with NewIcons compatible GlowIcons) and MCP. With MCP you can tune your Workbench to much more comfortable and NewIcons with proper icons make your desktop look better. VisualPrefs is useful if you like to tune WB further but it was always quite crashy on my Amiga.

Don't forget FullPalette, which perfectly complements VisualPrefs.

You can download the ideal 16 colour palette with all the colours you'll need for Workbench, programs, custom GUIs, icons and games (well, as close as you can get with such a limited amount of colours). Get it here - http://home.exetel.com.au/amiga/FullPalette.palette

Try it with SimplePac, EaglePlayer EMPY GUI, GlowIcons, MUI apps, Dynamite, and any other Workbench app you can throw at it, I have been very pleased with the results, they always appear to have the correct colours, nothing screwed up.

Only problem I see, is that few SCSI interfaces are going to support IDE. They are sort of different beasts. You could use a Buddha/Catweazle card for IDE in an A2000, but I would think just using a SCSI SC-ROM would be easier.
I have used both in my old A2000, and once hooked up, both work well - so go with which ever is the easiest on your pocket...

Idefix97 isn't needed. Just install a CD filesystem, and enter the correct device and unit number in the CD0 mountfile.

Edit: Idefix97 is only needed to patch the device driver of the onboard ide on a600/a1200/a4000 systems (and of course 4-way ide-splitters for these systems).
The driver in ROM doesn't support CDROM devices.

Hello AmigaPixel,

Official updates for OS3.1 can be found here at the "Unofficial AmigaOS Support Page"

http://os.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=

It also caters for OS3.5 & 3.9 as well, and gives good descriptions/feature lists of 3.1, 3.5 and 3.9.

Install disk from 3.1 have an "upgrade" button to upgrade the OS you are using. Don't remember if it allow to upgrade from ancient WB2.x.

But it will surely overwrite your preferences, startup-sequence and user-startup. Making a backup of those archives will not hurt you.

But as stefcep2 (http://www.amiga.org/forums/member.php?u=5194) wrote, get Classic Workbench. It will give you a completely installed Workbench with all needed features you need.

The Green Amiga Alien Edition (R.I.P. Paul, you'll be not forgotten) is a must for OCS/ECS machines and will fly on an A2000. Regular versions are more intended for AGA systems.

MCP is another great program, it saves you from hunting a lot of minor patches, functionalities and enhancements.

Also OS3.9 is OK (but not stunning fast) in a decently expanded A2000 (030 @33MHz or better) with at least 6Mb of RAM. More RAM the merrier, of course. Over 12Mb (4Mb of Zorro2 and 8Mb 32bit RAM) is more than perfect for 3.1.

My A2000 have OS3.9 (with legal 3.1 ROM) and I'm satisfied with this beast.:mickeymouse:
