Title: ROM update not loading on 3.9 / BB2
Post by: mousehouse on November 22, 2009, 06:24:16 PM
For some reason I cannot get AmigaOS 3.9 installed properly... Took me some time to figure out I was not running 3.9 at all, even though it installed properly. The fact that it looks so "3.1-ish" made me suspicious.

After reading a zillion posts I found out that the ROM update from BoingBag2 is  probaby not loaded, maybe someone has a few pointers for me.

Tech notes:
- Amiga 4000D, 2chip, 16fast, stock A3640 CPU board, PicassoIV video with P96 driver installed.
- Primary drive (6G IDE) connected to onboard controller, 1GB system boot partition.

Installation procedure followed:
- Installed 3.1 from floppy.
- Added P96 drivers from floppy.
- Added CacheCDFS from floppy.
- Installed AmigaOS3.5 from CD.
- Installed AmigaOS3.9 from CD (upgrade from 3.5).
- Installed BoingBag39-1, then 39-2.

Now, Workbench->About shows:

ROM 3.1
Kickstart 40.68
Workbench 45.3

To me this means that I'm running 3.9 software on a 3.1 ROM.

Everyting is stock, nothing added but the P96 drivers.

setpatch is version 44.38
68040.library is version 37.30

In he DEVS: folder I find several files, including the "AmigaOS ROM Update BB39-2". But running "SetPatch" shows it is not loaded. It does show loaded (among many things):

ROM Update 44.46 17-09-2000

which probably is a BB39-1 update?

startup-sequence only shows "setpatch quiet /s" or something similar with IDEfix loaded just before that.

Anybody have a clue as to what I'm missing here?

I doubt you got OS3.5 installed correctly. There is no reason to install OS3.5 at all, you can just install OS3.9 right away.

The BB2 file in Devs has to be renamed in order for it to load. The BB2 update can be tricky to get loaded, and that's why you are asked if you want to install it or not. If AmigaOS ROM Update is the same filesize as the BB2, the new ROM update is loaded though.

You're quick ;)
I understand the 3.5 installation is unnecessary, I just figured after all those years playing with 3.5 would make the step to 3.9 easier. After installing I figured, hey it just looks like 3.1 and decided to go straight to 3.9

Hmmm... it did ask I think and I answered positively. There is not software on the box anyway. What should I rename it to in order for it to load? Can I load it manually from the shell just to test?

If your OS3.5 installation looks like 3.1, then you haven't installed OS3.5 succesfully. Are you sure you just didn't do the pre installation? OS3.5 needs to be installed in two steps.

It should just be renamed to AmigaOS ROM Update.

Hmmm, I'll try to rename the update and see if it helps. If it doesn't then I'll pop in the 3.9 rescue disk and reinstall the complete machine to see what happens...

Thanks for the tips!

Update:

That actually did the trick! It was loading an older ROM update file (about 130K in size) insteaf of the 3.9 ROM (about 360K in size). After renaming it now loads the ROM correctly, Workbench info gives ROM 3.9!

The icons still are mostly 4-color ones, even though my Workbench screen is set to 8-bit.

Any tips on how I can make it look like:

I was wondering the exact same thing. On my 3.9 install there was definately a rom update loaded (reboot during cold boot) but it was confusing to see AmigaOS ROM Update.39-2 was in devs: and not loaded. But apparently Boing Bag 2 overwrites the existing AmigaOS ROM Update, then creates a copy of it to be sure. Both ROM's give the same kickstart version in the About window. the original one, from os3.9, is still there as AmigaOS ROM Update.old.

There are several ways to do this. You can install AFA_OS, which will let you use .png icons, which look much better tan the standard icon set with OS3.9. There are lots of different icon sets you can pick up off the web. My preference is for Ken Lister's "Ken's Icons", which are used by AmiKit. You can get them here: http://www.five-star.com/icons.htm

You can install other Wokbench enhancements like VisualPrefs and Birdie, which will allow you tweak many more settings. You can also install Scalos and Director Opus Magellan II.

Or if you want a quick approach just install Amikit on your real Amiga. There is a guide on the Amikit website to do this and also read the forums on A.Org.
