Does it work? So I don't have to buy more expensive Amiga-compatible one?
-
It better does :)

I used one of these in my Xbox and it DOES work as a normal IDE drive. Be careful though as it is NOT hot-swapable!!!
-
I can confirm that it works just fine on Amiga, just like any other CF-to-IDE adapter.
But keep in mind what J-Golden said; they are not hot-swappable.
-
You say its not hot-swappable... but can I remove it, copy a few files on the PC to it, then put the same card, without switch off/on the Amiga?

Yes as that would be considered "COLD" Swapping. lol

Thats good enough for me :D

Isn't "COLD" Swapping swapping while the machine is OFF?
If he intends to do it "without switch off/on the Amiga", wouldn't that be "hot", which this supposedly can't do??

Desiv is right. This is not a USB device. You must turn off your Miggy before inserting the CF card if you want it to be recognized by the computer. You can't simply remove a SCSI or IDE HD while the machine is on, insert another and expect it to work. Same exact concept.
Still, it's a cool device and a worthwhile one for transferring files to and fro.

Would pulling the CF card out while the Amiga is on damage the card or is it just that it would confuse the OS. If it doesn't physically damge the card, I'd be tempted to try it on an Amiga. AmigaOS doesn't generally try to access the drive unless you tell it to. As long as you were careful it might work. If you removed the card after the Amiga's fully booted would AmigaOS even know if you pull the card out? So as long as you don't try to access the card while it's out, couldn't you add some files to the card on your PC and stick the card back into the Amiga and AmigaOS would never even know the card was missing?

If you try to how swap a CF card plugged into an IDE adapter, I believe it will freeze the computer. Or you'll lose the ability to read/write to and fro the device until you reset.
Perhaps one could use that SCSI stopping program found on Aminet to achieve a faux hot-swap. Then start up again? Dunno, never tried. I bought a Deneb USB card and now life is so much more interesting again for my Miggy :-)
-
Physically the IDEtoCF adapter does support hot swap (so nothing can get damaged), but the Miggy's software doesn't.
You can somewhat circumvent that by 'diskchange'ing the volume before unplugging (so possible dirty buffers get written back), avoid access while it's unplugged, and then 'diskchange' again after replugging to read in any changes. Be careful though, chances are IDE may get locked up, so test well before use. I've been using this method with SCSI drives for ages without damaging anything. Obviously you'll get massive read errors from an unplugged device...

A couple years ago, I snagged a SCSI-to-IDE adapter for my old Mac Quadra 950. I wonder if I could go SCSI-to-IDE-to-CF in my Amiga 2000? I don't see any reason why not, but I'd be curious if anyone here has tried such a thing...

@Huxley_D: you'll be fine. Only real snafu would like in the termination of the SCSI chain or powering the CF card adapter. Make sure that puppy has +5 going to it! Usually has a floppy power connector directly on board...

Yes sir, I am running my Amiga 2000 with a SCSI to IDE to CF card setup and it runs mighty fine!
