It`s all over

Not if you continue to use, enjoy and are productive with it :-) Look how long it's been "over" for Commodore!

Very good point :)
Taken from the MED yahoo group list today............
"It is very sad, but I have to announce that due to Alfred's
continuing ill health, he has asked me to let you know that he
is unable to continue any further work on a new OS4 version.
So it is likely I will be closing the Amiga side of the web site
in the new year, so if you still have not downloaded the old
v1.03c, better do it now.
Ray
PS
Alfred says he will keep an eye out for any messages posted to
him in this mailer."

an awesome program and we pray that Alfred gets better soon to hopefully see it on OS4.x one day :-)

I never liked octamed much, I went straight from protracker to screamtracker to fastracker II.
Milkytracker is a great fast tracker clone, and what I use today because i can use it on windows, linux or AMIGA.
Hope his health improves however. Octamed was pretty great when it was introduced, and innovative.
The problem for them I guess is all the windows competition, there are hundreds of trackers, softsynths and music production progs now.

Huh.. Protracker, Screamtracker, Fasttracker, Milkytracker.. now that has been a long, rocky and painfull road :-)
OctaMED wiped the floors with all of these back in the time. Especially V4 was a real joy to use, although it had a couple bugs when using MIDI and samples.
Check out Renoise (http://www.renoise.com) .. purr... purr... purr...

Yes I use renoise, but I find for most thinks milky is cool. besides, you can load any xm into renoise...
Generally I start stuff in milky and finish in renoise.
I just didn't like staying 8 bit at the time, screamtracker was 8 bit but then I forgot... impulse tracker was in the middle and 16 bit cheap...
Then moved to ft2/milky...

Its quite surprising that trackers havent disappeared after all these years, even now many are under development. Maybe its the ease of use or the fact its a cheap(or even for free) way to produce music thats kept trackerism going. I was very delighted to come back to trackering after a few years silence and find out trackerscene had even improved while I was away :)

The current version of Octamed is just fine with me. It's perfect for making retro sounding 8bit mods and runs smooth even on an 020!. You can Midi sync it with your
PC or Mac to mix 24bit w/ 8bit samples to get a pretty cool effect. Its about the only reason that I still have an A4000 sitting here. :)

It`s all over
Obviously, open-sourcing has not even considered. Hsn't it? (I don't follow the OctaMED ML, so I don't know)

OctaMED can use 16-bit samples perfectly, they just sound 8-bit when played through Paula. If you mix the track to a CD (I mix to a MAUD file then use makeCD), they sound perfect.
The real fun starts when you attach a MIDI sampler and some FX units.
-
I really wish they would just open source it but, I don't think thats ever going to happen. Ray's probably still mad about all the pirated versions that got out so I dought he'll ever give up the code.

Yea, I do use lots of 16bit sample too but they do sound 8bit through the paula. as said earlier, Bitchrusher and effects like that sound great.

try putting them on CD and playing them - the quality is intact!

"MIDI sampler and some FX units"
Yep. OSS becomes just as good as anything when you get a MIDI sampler working - big fun again. As far as this being 'over' well it's kinda no news item to me. Teijo and Ray - thank you a million.

Well, the last / latest version of OctaMED for the Amiga still has more features and potential than I have used to full advantage, so it really is everything I need (well, full AHI integration would be good, but at least it CAN use 16-bit samples and mixdown to a 16-bit quality file).
Still, it's sad about Alfred Faust having to retire from development. I should point out that he has also had to stop developing Bars & Pipes (best MIDI sequencing software EVER written - no joke). He's done so much for that particular piece of software to improve it, it's really hard to thank him enough.
His last version of Bars & Pipes New (1.29) seems very stable and bug free (knock on wood). It also runs very well under UAE....so despite its (only slightly) dated graphics it will remain a major part of my music software for....well, for the rest of my life, anyway. I'll always keep a real Amiga or a UAE installation around just for it.
The Bars & Pipes source code IS open source however, so someone CAN step in here and continue developing it (especially to finish Alfred's largely complete OS4 port). Anyone?

I've used OctaMED SS on the amiga for donkeys years now. I'd like to say I still use it regularly but that'd be a lie. Not because I've moved to some newer package but principally because I've not sat down and composed any music for ages.
I actually like the paula sound; I usually tried to make it work for me, rather than against me, when writing music.

Agreed. There is something raw about that 8-bit sound.
