Title: Punky's Dilema, A1200 won't read floppy drive
Post by: punkyclown on October 31, 2009, 10:31:07 PM
Hello, I just swapped out the mother board of an A1200 I have, put in 3.1 roms put the Keyboard and floppy drive back on screwed down everything, but when I power it up it won't read the floppy.  First I get a blank screen and just the power light, after about 30 seconds the drive light comes on (I can hear it spinning) but nothing happens and then I get the 3.1 rom screen with the insert floppy anim.  Any Ideas, this drive worked fine on the other mother board, I had it attached to an 1960 monitor which shorted out after that the software
would not load and I got a bunch of write errors, I was told here it was the CIA chips, the drive still fired up and tried to load the software and recognized the floppy.
Thanks

2 things I could think of.

1st, loosen the case, especially all the screws by the floppy drive.  Just get the case real loose and and try it.  My first A1200 if you tightened the case screws too tight around the floppy drive area, it wouldn't read floppies.  Very strange I know.

2nd would be to make sure the floppy drive cable is the right direction.  I know it wouldn't boot if the HD cable was reversed, but can't remember about the floppy cable.  (I'm sure I connected mine wrong at least once, I always screw stuff like that up :-) )

I put my hard drive on it and it recognizes and tried to boot it, I get the first screen of the startup and then a requester window saying no disk in CDO.  Also I have no response from my mouse, though I was able to type loadwb which it carried out but did not close the startup screen.  I think there are multiple problems here....

Okay, I was all wet about the mouse which meant I was all wet about my hard drive, once I got my mouse plugged in correctly I was able to cancel the no disk in CDO and my hard drive booted fine and is running fine.  DF0: reads 'DF0:unreadable' so any help I can get on that would be great.  I did notice that there was one pin missing on the Floppy drive on board connector, I don't think that would do it, do you?  And if it would, how to fix?
Thanks

Okay, I have now hooked up a second drive, is recognized and works fine, and then the CD-Rom drive, same thing, recognized and running fine.  So really my only problem is DF0:.
Thanks.
