i have tried to become a better network player with quake , quake 2 , heretic2 , freespace and shogo (yes amiga versions) , and everytime i play on the net (official servers) i get wacked in the most strangest places and all the time.
i dont want to sound like a bad looser (though i do get like 3rd place of 18 players etc) but i am pretty sure there is some heavy cheating in the games (especially quake 1 , quake 2 and shogo) so how to eiter cheat?:D or make the cheaters go away?
any tips is welcome , i use 3.21 of quake 2 , and 2.40 ? of quake 1. (2.2 of shogo)
cheers

Quake2 Cheats (http://www.pccheatz.com/Quake_2.htm) 8-)

If you are playing the Amiga version on a real Amiga against PC players you are already at a slight disadvantage by default. First Person Shooter games are heavily reliant on both FPS(frames per second) and latencies. Running these games on even the beefiest classic Amiga can't touch a PC for horsepower obviously. Also keep in mind there are simply hardcore players out there who will always be better than us casual players:-)
-
First things first - the Quake2 console "cheats" don't work in multiplayer mode, unless the server is launched to allow it. Secondly, your huge ping is more likely to be the cause of your strange deaths. You can't see the other players until its too late and they kill you.

@ Lempkee
Hi! I'm new to Quake 1, and I'd like some info/links for the network game. I've heard that there are amiga clans etc... :)
I' m running Quake_GUI with quakeWOS (the only combination I've been able to run).
Thanks

Your ping relies on your connection with the server. If you are getting lousy pings, chances are that you are just connecting to a crap server. Try to find one that has a decent connection. As far as cheating goes, the server is supposed to have any software installed that prevents that (such as punkbuster).

Your high ping with perhaps not perfect skills result in massive lossage.
The best way to train your skills is to play against a bit better players than yourself (some challenge, while still being fair enough so you don't get bored getting fragged all the time).
I would suggest playing regular DeathMatch first, as there are no extra things to take into consideration, just survival and fragging the others.
Some basic tips about FPS (quake1/quake2 etc):
- Use keyboard + mouse. There are some players who use keyboard only and really kick ass, but these cases are very rare (I've seen two keyboard only players). For right handed: mouse with right hand, and strafe left/right, move forward/backwards for the left hand. Usually ADWS or SFED keys are used. Other keys are bound to weapons or some other specials. Mouse is used to face the char: sideways turn, up/down for looking up/down (whether this is reversed is a matter of taste). Mouse1 attack, Mouse2 jump (jump need to be close at hand for rocketjumping). With 3 or more button mouse these extra buttons can be assigned some addional ops. Naturally these are just guidelines to give you an idea, you need to work out your own setup.
- Learn to run backwards and shoot your opponent following you. Yes, this needs some practice and you need to know the maps well.
- Keep your health/armor up, then you will always have advantage over respawning players.
- Don't use autoaim, this seriously mess up the aiming (no proper lead). Also learn to use slow weapons against moving target. Usually rockets should be fired on the gound (don't forget the lead!), this way missing rocket will still cause damage.
- Learn some basic routes to run thru maps (get weapons, ammo, heath/armor), don't just wander around without plan.
- Always keep moving, unless if invisible or otherwise in hiding. Sitting duck will get shot.
- When under fire, don't run straight lines or the opponent will have easy task figuring out the lead. Just try to run straight when the enemy has a rocketlauncher and you see what I mean.
There are tons of other stuff, but this is the most obvious stuff I could think of. :-)

Whats the mininmum spec for me to play quake at a decent speed on my a1200?
Damm wish there was a UT port for amiga :-(

@Lempkee
I suck at Quake, but if your ever up for a game, I'll fire up my Miggy (Amithlon) and spout a few games with ya.
:-D
That way, you can get first place ALL the time. Heh, at lan parties I've been to, it's become commonplace to have me run in front of my team, 'cos I suck so bad, I draw them off and the GOOD player on my side pick 'em off at their leisure.
I'm quite proud that I ALWAYS get last place! :-P
[EDIT]
Speaking of, is there any way to make the mouse aim on the Amiga port permanent. I hate having to hold the capslock key down to aim with the mouse. That makes me even slower.

I think you won't be able to win against x86 in Quake2 based games simply because it's nearly impossible to not run at full framerate with a reasnoably modern x86. You won't get near that performance with 68K, or 200MHz-ish PPC. Framerate counts alot. When you become good at fragging, the framrate will be the decisive factor if you win or not.
I used to have high lag too, before I bought a new modem. Some modems simply doesn't work well with Amigas. Dunno why; both modems were cheapos.
Try borrowing a friends modem to compare.
Also, playing the Q2 campaign and playing deathmatch or on the net are two completely different creatures. The campaign requires some passive sniping, this will get you instantly fragged when plaing on the net.
Sidestepping and turning to circle around corners with a stable aim is an extremely important skill.
Use vulture behavior and circle around lumps of targets (or bonuses).
Parasite on sucessfull players by running after them and try not to get caught doing so. When the others are distracted when firing at the champ, or think they got ignored by the same, then kill em off. When you get confident enough then start killing off the champ too.

And with a ping > 200 ms you are high ping bait anyways.

You would be better off getting hold of one of the Amiga QuakeWorld ports for playing quake1 online as it was made for just that, thus being far more responsive than Quake1.
I used to play QW alot on my amiga and would be quite well even with my small viewsize & low fps 170-200 ping against a full server of HFLPB high fps low ping bast**ds.
would even come first at times.
aint played for a while tho.
good servers site

Well, that might be the essence of your problem! ADSL players are allways sitting ducks. Get broadband! :-P

cheating on multiplayer games sure SUCK! Those who do it should burn... they destroy the games

real broadband is sadly not avaliable in most of the world..
most people have to settle with slower cable lines or adsl :-(
Some areas you even have to settle with dialup

thanx for all posts , i must say that i normally get up with the 3best even if i have 200+ in ping and playing on my amiga.
in quake 1 blitzquake i get 40fps in 800x600 on my setup (a1200)
in quake 2 i get 26 fps in 640x480.
i suck in quake 1 really and i find quake 2 easier to win a fight, problem is to find an active server where my ping is low.
and yes i have broadband and more than most normal users so my guess is they cheat (seems to use auto aim or simmilar) + the rest is like 200 pings in front of me , the servers i used untill now has very constant kick ratio due to its supposed to be an Amiga only clan (any hw allowed)
anyway how to spot a cheater? , one that doesnt die even if you launch 2 missiles straight in his head and then he kills you, a cheater is one that runs in lava and jumps 2 times as high as any of the other players and ofcourse most of all one that always has good weapons!.
we doesnt host the server so i cant check if its allowed, but i will tell the lads :)
thanx .

one that doesnt die even if you launch 2 missiles straight in his head and then he kills you
At least in quake1 player can easily take two direct rocket hits (have some armor and health).
a cheater is one that runs in lava
Lava doesn't kill instantly, and the player might have pentagram of protection. Good players know how to get out of lava, too (usually by rocketjumping). If he runs in the lava all the time, then this sounds suspicious.
and jumps 2 times as high as any of the other players
That's called rocketjumping. Face down, jump and fire a rocket to ground. The explosion will make the player jump much higher than normally, gaining access to places you normally can't reach or giving a shortcut. Rocketjumping is not easy at first (esp. since you get damage from the explosion yourself). I trained by playing singleplayer quake1 in god mode.
and ofcourse most of all one that always has good weapons!
Good players don't die often -> they have good weapons most of the time.
