Is there a program to hide the My Computer icon from the desktop? I want to have seperate icons for each drive on the desktop itself and get rid of the My Computer icon totally.
I'm getting annoyed going into My Computer then C: or wherever, I just want to go straight into C: .
-
I don't think so. The closest I can think of is a solution to remove all icons from the desktop.
However, a google search found this:
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1043/
However, just like with removing Network Neighbourhood/My Network Places from the desktop, there are probably consequences.
-
MS TweakUI will do that.
-
MS TweakUI will do that.
I think maybe you should check that first :-) TweakUI 1.33 doesn't have an option for Win2k to remove the My Computer icon.

Sorry for being off-topic, but this has been bugging me, what are the consequences of removing the Network Neighbourhood/Places icon?

yes its pretty pathetic :) , also remeber pc aint illegal here :) , oh and ... icons ? :)
my tip is , throw the pc out , install Dopus magellan 5.82 or os3.9 and remove all your icons.
then you can come on here and ask how to get the icons back :DDD

I've downloaded TweakUI 2000 and it doesn't have an option for hiding My Computer. It can hide/show specific drives within My Computer, but it can't get rid of the desktop icon itself.
@mikeymike
I'm not too keen on changing the registry myself for this. :-)
@tpk
I've got Network whatever hidden on my 2k box and it's had no consequences (yet ;-) ).

if I threw out the pc that means I'd be surfing the net on a 640 * 256 free version of AWeb in 256 colours. No thanks :-P
I already have Dopus 5.5 on my A1200, I also have 5.8, but I uninstalled that after it almost crippled my chip ram. I have os3.9 though :-)

I already know how to hide/show icons on the Miggy :-P :-D
You know, this is the best place to ask for PC help because you don't get patronising people telling you that you're useless and then giving you completely stupid replies that don't work. All this from people who think they are above you when all they're trying to do is put one-up on each other :-P
This is an Amiga USER forum. I'm an Amiga USER, it's just unfortunate that some of us need to use PC's from time to time :-(
Anyway, rant over with, let's get back to the point ;-)

@Vincent
You're right - people are helpful here, and realise that all of us must use a PC some time...

Sorry for being off-topic, but this has been bugging me, what are the consequences of removing the Network Neighbourhood/Places icon?
copied from Tweak UI help, though I don't think this is the full extent of the issue:
"Consequences of hiding Network Neighborhood
Since shell support for the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) notation is handled by the Network Neighborhood, hiding the Network Neighborhood icon will prevent Explorer from accessing resources via UNCs. In order to access network resources from Explorer, you need to map them to a drive letter. Note that the MS-DOS command prompt and other applications are not affected by this setting, because they do not use the Network Neighborhood to resolve UNCs.
In particular, hiding the Network Neighborhood prevents Direct Cable Connection from displaying the contents of the host computer. Aside from this, Direct Cable Connection functions normally."
IIRC, on Win9x, it would affect network/Dial-up authentication, but then a stiff breeze could blow over network configs on Win9x.
I can't find an MS support article on the issue.

"TweakUI 2000"? MS's TweakUI is currently at v1.33 (http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp).
I'm not too keen on changing the registry myself for this
It's not that scary, but up to you.

vincent: upgrade your amiga then :)

I believe there is a way to safely shut off all desktop items, as opposed to just specific icons. I don't remember how to do that, but I believe it is their.
The helpful part: If you get all of the icons shut off, you can go to the toolbar, right click, select "Toolbars". You can then select Other for the toolbar. This will give you the ability to add "My Computer" as a toolbar item.
Its not exactly putting the drives on the desktop, but it will give you quick easy access to all of your drives without having to open a window to get to them.

And if you carry on like you have been going so far, you'll top the poster list! Jeez, you've gone past me in only two months or so!

I know he he :-) I'd be very interested to see some stats from the last few weeks and where I come out. I've been quite prolific.

@Vincent
It's possible, but you're probably better off with an alternative desktop shell like Talisman or LiteStep.

There aren't any, except that they make the networking prefs harder to access.
Putting the icon back again is another matter. ;-)

Unfortunately I can't do that. The PC is used by Siouxsie aswell and she only know the usual "Windows" layout. She's at uni and works so she doesn't really have time to learn a new layout just now.
Maybe during the next holidays though ;-)

Congrats on making it to Defender of the Faith! :-D

Pretty easy solution actually, replace the MyComputer icon with a blank icon, and rename it to nothing. Move it somewhere out of the way before you do this and you will never know it's there.
(You need a blank icon first to replace it with, make one yourself with iconedit or similar).
To "hide" and not disable the functionality of either, do the following regedits (don't add the ##'s those are either 1,2,3 etc depending on which icon inside your icon file you wish to use).
Network Neighborhood:
Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\ {208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}\ DefaultIcon, and change the (Default) value to "filename, ##."
My Computer:
Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\ {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\ DefaultIcon, and change the (Default) value to "filename, ##."
Edit: Ah, actually, here's even better instructions and details :-)

you can do it the budget way,
1) simply make a link on the desktop to your c: in the middle of your screen (assume your my computer, network and recycled are on left of screen)
2) select the new icon and the icons on the left you dont want shown.
3) drag them all left until the c: is still showing but the others are off the screen
4) find some windows forum to ask this in.
This really is a budget way of doing it, because if you organise your icons or resize your screen they will come back again. They might even come back after reboot but i havent rebooted this win2k box for nearly a year, so i dont know...

@teotwin
Interesting, I never thought of that one :-)
