The only explanation is that the partition you try to format isn't really using SmartFileSystem.

yeah that's what I thought, is it possible to just click on DH0: now and choose format from the menu?

Surely this is possible, but it does not change the fact that the partition does not and will not use SmartFileSystem.

Enter

version dh0:

in a Shell window to see which file system the partition uses. If it does not say SmartFileSystem, you have to go back to HDToolbox and check the partition's settings.

It say's filesystem 39.27

Is it possible to change this to the correct one?

The only way to do that is, like Thomas already said, in HDToolbox.

In HDToolbox check if SmartFileSystem is in the RDB by clicking the add/update button.

If it is, click the change button to change it to the correct filesystem.

Would I need to reformat and install workbench again, or would it be just better to upgrade to OS3.9 (if that works on Kickstart 3.0 roms)

thanks for the help!

OS3.9 does not work on KS 3.0.
