I was going through my spare chips and found a Motorola 68010 processor? Can I remove the 68000 from my A2000 and simply install this? Will it damage the motherboard? Is it any faster? Thanks.

Try it..! Seriously people with A500s and A2000s have used them many times before. It will give a small boost, possibly noticable, depends on the software used and the types of instructions. But it was released to fix floors in the vanilla. Sort of a service pack for processors. It did have some instruction issues with some code. Test all your favs carefully.
Thats if it's not dead of course AND if you are comfortable removing and inserting a processor, which can be tricky. (no sharp screwdrivers please) It is DIP of course and not the PGA..?
Cheers, Gertsy.

Yes
Will it damage the motherboard?
No (unless if you do)
Is it any faster?
In practice no. It will cause some compatibility problems though, mostly with some games.

If you use whdload it will make quit button to work

Given the (very small) performance increase compared to the effort required, I'd say it depends on how bored you are. Though I didn't know the tidbit about WHDloads quit button.

It's the sole bonus; old games which do not work with 020 may also not work with 010.

I've heard it's only a 5-10% increase in speed (depends on the program) so you probably won't notice the difference.

Don't you have an 030 accelerator? That would make much more sense.
I just added a 68010 CPU to my A1000 (It came with an Insider I just bought). The speed increase I am seeing is more likely due to the extra RAM. All of the games I have for it still run fine though.

I had a 68010 in my A1000 before I bought my A1200. Then i put the 68000 back.
The 68010 did give a small speed increase that was sometimes noticeable, but there was software that wouldn't run with that CPU. There was a patch on a Fish Disk (should be on Aminet now) that trapped the problematic MOVE SR,EA instruction (going totally from memory). Actually, I think there was more than one. I remember "DeciGEL" and maybe "SuperDeciGEL" and maybe somthing else.
That patches didn't work with games on custom boot disks, of course. IIRC, Shadow of the Beast was one of the games that wouldn't run with the 68010.

Ok, many people say that some software isn't compatible with this CPU. Does anybody have an idea of how much. Other than an occasional game, does it for the most part work fine? I admit that I am not really after the 10% performance increase, I am simply after the brag factor. While everybody else says their Amiga has a 68000, I get to say "My Amiga has the 68010!" That is pretty much it in a nutshell.
Does this CPU cause any other problems such as instability within Workbench? Is it hard on the motherboard in any way? If it is an occasional game, I might just go for it because I do all my gaming off my Accelerator board.

I have run my A500 with a 68010 for the last 20+ years. It will not harm your hardware. Workbench (at least with kickstart 2.04 ) runs great. Only the occasional game is a problem.
-
Sounds good. I guess I will go ahead and do it. By the way, did you see a performance increase at all Orphan264?

If the program happens to do this and use this feature:
....68010 has loop mode what can considered a mini instruction cache, which accelerates loops that consist of only 2 instructions...
You get that performance increase.

If you already have an accelerator installed, putting a 68010 on the motherboard will do absolutely nothing. The motherboard CPU is deactivated by the accelerator.
-
I know I would be using my accelerator almost 100% of the time. I am just doing this upgrade because I can. It does nothing more than make me feel "happy on the inside" knowing that I have a 68010 in my system.

I get the same feeling when I put a cheese sandwich in my 68060-equipped 4000T.

Go the whole hog and wave some broccoli at it.
